Lack of quality control
Comment:
Always used to swear by seagate drives, but lately I haven't had much luck. I bought the ST31000333AS with Firmware CC1F and it's still plagued by the clicking problem. The drive started with a few read errors and now the drive has continous read errors. Drive is getting RMA'd now. Unfortunately it'll be replaced with the same problematic drive.

My Seagate 7200.11 failed after about 10 months as a secondary drive. I used it mostly for my game programs. Can't say I have had good luck with Seagate internal drives.

Seagate 1st time buyer disapointed
Comment:
Thought what a bargan, $89.99 for a 1TB drive, 32mb unit! Wow. Sad to say, DOA. I was abit ify in my decision to try, after being a WD and Maxtor fan for 10 years. We will see how the warranty goes, or the store swap out. In all fairness... it was the 7200.12 that I bought, not the 7200.11.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
Comment:
My drive just died on me after 8 months of use. Lost all my data. This is ridiculous. I've now sent it for warranty replacement, but I'm not sure whether I should trust it with my data this time. The drive would not get recognized by the BIOS and is constantly restarting (I can hear it spinning up, and then powering off, and then spinning again). Go get WD or other brands instead, and don't risk losing everything

I had one for almost 6 months, and all of the sudden it started not being recognized by the BIOS, and soon afterward it started clicking.

AVOID
Comment:
ST31000340AS - SD15 Had this for about 5 months, almost instantanious content listing when clicked into. Turned pc on one morning, and drive wasnt showwing up, restarted looked in bios, not there either. checked both cables and alternate sata ports - still nothing. Tried seagates fix-it disk and xp os disk and still not there. It gets power to spin the platters, so its something to do with the chipboard. Lost about 600 movies. I might try to switch chipboards later on (same model+firmware) to see if I can recover the contents. Thinking of going back to WD, at least when their drives take a crap, they sound like theyre chewwing gravel (giving advanced warning) Not worth the money if you need ''back up'' drives, just incase the main ones go down.

I've had similar issue as a lot of folks here... drive worked fine for a couple of months, but then just failed to be recognized by the BIOS. I've switched to WD and will never look back.

Great Speed!!
Comment:
Replaced an aging hard 320gb hard drive in my Sony Desktop with this 1T and was amazed at the faster speed a 32m buffer makes. (Sony was 16mb)VERY QUIET and runs so much cooler. Before, the heat escaping my computer was very hot, now it is barely warm. Still is amazing to see 2 times the original hard drives size in 'remaining space' on my new hard drive. :)

Highly satisfied.
Comment:
I bought this 1TB drive to enhance my old 330 GB drive; transferred all my info from old to the new. Works just great. I am back up and running without any glitch. Can't find much fault with Seagate. I have had this make going back to the 10 GB days. No problems whatsoever. Highly recommended. About Tigerdirect: They handled my phone order and shipped it in. When price dropped by $10, I called them and they issued a credit. No questions asked. Great product, great company to deal with.

not really worth it...
Comment:
I bought the 750GB version of this, it doesn't seem to be sold on here anymore. I bought a smaller one instead of the 1TB only 5 months ago, it seems like it died, been trying everything for 2 weeks, it is warm but it cant be detected by any means.... not worth the trouble for only 5 months for 117$ at the time. My old Maxtor lasted 6 yrs and is still the one I have to use while I get something else...

Crash/Lock up
Comment:
Crashed/locked up without warning (BIOS can not find drive - no popcorn sounds, no error message, no diagnostics possible). Appears to be typical problem for the 1TB model of the Barracude 7200. Seagate changed warranty in 2009 from 5 to 3 years on the 7200, which I guess should tell you all you need to know. I would not buy again.

Somebodys gotta complain!
Comment:
But it's not me. I have 2 of these drives in a Dell XPS 430 running Vista Ultimate x64. 1 system & 1 slave. Their very fast, very quiet & so far very reliable. Besides. nobody gives you a better warrantee then Seagate. Opposite of another review, I've always had issues with the smaller Seagate drives. their lightweight & can't handle heat. These 2 drives on this system were one of the 2 best moves I've ever made. The other being a video card upgrade to a Safire Radeon 4670 DDR3 1024 Mb card that I also got here. My performance index is now 5.7 out of a possible high of 5.9. You get what you pay for & these upgrades gave me a desktop PC I only dreamed about owning brfore.

Solid Drives
Comment:
In my opinion Seagate makes some of the most reliable, efficient and stable hard drives on the market. I have 3 of these that have being running with no issues for over 8 months in a NAS media server. The write times are fast, the read times quick and with a 32mb buffer HD content streams flawlessly.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
Comment:
It worked fine for 7 months then the BIOS could no longer recognize it. There were no clicking sounds or other noises: it just died. I've had good luck with Seagate drives (500MB and less) in the past. There appear to be reliability issues with these larger drives.

Comment:
Stay away from this drive. The features are great (1TB, 32MB cache, 7200 RPM, SATA-300) but that's about it! I bought mine in Jan 09 and it worked well for a couple of weeks until it started locking up on me and the only way to get it going again was to switch the power off for a couple of minutes and switch it back on again. Seagate released a Firmware update which I successfully installed but I still have the same problem. There are hundreds of people who are having similar problems with Seagate's latest Barracuda Hard Drives. I've bought about a dozen Seagates over the years and they have always been extremely reliable, but this one is terrible. The price is low for a reason and now you know why! Don't rely only on the rating, read the comments! One buyer gave it a 4/5 but his drive is dead!!!

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
Comment:
Surprising ANY of these work if packed the way mine was - in an oversized box with a single piece piece of brown paper floating around in the box to ''absorb'' shocks -- what a joke! I hate to think how often this slammed from one end of the box to the other during shipping. Travelling from New Jersey to Windsor, Ontario then the EAST end of Toronto for sorting, then back to the WEST end for delivery - bouncing around & changing trucks 3 times (according to UPS tracking) it arrived freezing cold. Only thing worse would be putting stamps on the hard drive and mailing it. I suspect poor packing is partially responsible for some failed drives. I worked at the Post Office as a student. Put your hard drive in a cardboard box & throw it 6 to 10 feet - repeat three or four times - that's what happens to deliveries. Warmed it to room temp, installed, formatted & amazingly it works fine (so far) ... any precison equipment that can take a beating & works deserves 5 stars.

I will never buy it again. p.s. it is not my computer problem. I just turned my old hdd and it works perfect.

Great hard drive, its been working perfectly for a few weeks with higher than normal use. I bought the 750gb version for $116, right after I bought it they introduced the 1TB for $119! This is a great hard drive and I can highly recommend it, much faster than my 7200.10 main drive, which has also been running great for over a year. My next hard drive will be this 1TB Barracuda.
