Vantec Nexstar SATA 2.5IN/3.5IN Hard Drive Docking Station USB2.0 eSATA
Cons:- none

Pros:- easy to use- reasonably priced- blue LEDs- eSata- blue LEDs- good build quality
Comment:
Well built product and does what it is supposed to do. Transfer speeds are reasonable on USB (it IS USB 2.0 so don't expect blazing speeds) and fast on eSata. For those who are complaining that this product doesn't work with eSata, you might want to check your BIOS settings and drivers before complaining. Besides that, I also like the color scheme and blue LEDs of this product and they match with my WD external drive.

Worked suitable out of the box on Dell XPS720 with XP. No complications at all. I have 4 x 1Tb drives in the Pc and now use my old left over 500gig Sata drives as back up. A great answer! I have maxed out my external eSata connections so I connect via USB. Transfer rate is oK. I am certain it will perform on eSata although I have not tried it. To swap drives several occasions throughout a day is no challenge and hassle no cost. I can only recommend this item very. None. Drives are seated not exactly shock proof or tight and can run hot due to lack of cooling but the box was not meant to be a drive chassis/enclosure. So. any negative evaluations in this particular area should not be viewed as a minus.

- Easy to use.- Does what it is suppose to. - The unit feels pretty lightweight, some would say flimsy but does not impede it's usage.-The power adapter cord is super thin.-The on button doesn't stay in evenly, it's lopsided. Be sure to examine if your motherboard has Hotswap, otherwise when you plug it in a restart of the computer system is necessary for the computer to recognize the hard drive by way of eSata. Laptops with the eSata port must have it though.

Just wanted to mention how to make this hot-swappable in e-SATA mode with particular motherboards, due to the fact a few men and women have mentioned that you can't do it.In Device Manager, turn off write-caching for this drive. Then you can turn the enclosure off without having worrying that there may well still be unwritten information cached. Then, when you swap a various drive in, turn the enclosure back on and scan for new hardware in Device Manager. The drive will be found and you shouldn't have to reboot. None.

USB 2. transfer rates are pretty great. It can be connected prior to booting and utilised as a typical Sata drive The Esata doesn't function suitable with Vista 64. It looks like a one slice bagel toaster.Feels more like a toy than a piece on electronics. I gave it a 2 since only half of the functions function appropriately and the cheesy develop high quality.

Power button on front. Activity & power light on front. Comes with an eSATA adaptor you can use to wire an internal SATA connector to an empty card slot. White. Base not weighted. Difficult drive is inserted a lil additional than Thermatake unit. Contrary to earlier posts Thermaltake makes a functionally identical unit to this a single, eSATA and all. It's the ST0005U. The egg didn't list the thermaltake for quite a lengthy time right after it was accessible elsewhere. I have both units. Either has it's minor strenths and weaknesses. One particular major plus for the Vantec unit is that it comes with an eSATA I/O adaptor for the host computer. Otherwise, the only difference is the placement of the buttons & lights. I prefer the placements of the buttons & lights on the Vantec. I favor the color & weighted base of the Thermaltake. Hardrive seems to fit the Thermaltake unit a tad better. I doubt that should make a lot of difference with your obtain selection. I'm working with both interchangeably for streaming HD video/audio to my PS3 through host media server. Operates excellent, WD 500GB drives remain cool in ither enclosure.

Performs with out a hitch. You can add massive external storage cheaply and conveniently with this device. The eSATA interface is quickly, just like an internal connection, which it pretty substantially is.Every thing you could possibly will need to use it is included in the package, such as an eSATA bracket if you don't have a single currently.Vantec tech assistance is rapid and responsive (see cons). Can't use USB and eSATA connections simultaneously to swap data between my desktop and laptop, confirmed with Vantec tech help (response by subsequent day). I have to reboot whenever I hot-swap the eSATA connection for the drive to be recognized, so this is inconvenient. Drives, perhaps depending on brand, can get Genuinely hot when under heavy continuous use, possibly because there's no metal case to aid dissipate heat. I transferred my old drive to a new drive with this device. Reported temperature during this transfer 鵎GB of data, apps, technique, and so on.) got to 50C ahead of I noticed. Max operating temp for the drive is 60C, so 50C was as well hot for comfort. I solved this by balancing a CPU HSF on best of the drive, and temps dropped to a significantly much more affordable 37C. Removing the HSF, I watched the temp climb again.I wonder if some of the "burning" troubles and drive destruction in prior reviews is related to this...

-Does precisely what you'd anticipate-Operates flawlessly-Very good quality-Looks great: Curvy, glossy, eye-catching white w/ futuristic long blue LED activity light and huge round power button w/additional blue LED encircling. Men and women who come in my office are generally searching and commenting on them. -Includes an internal SATA to eSata backplate for your Computer -- main plus so those without having eSata ports don't will need to get anything extra, and these with them don't want to occupy a single. I've read yet another comment that says it's not "heavy"-feeling adequate compared to Thermaltake's version. It is on the light side. The very same guy is also concerned about heat dissipation. He must consider that a heavier/denser unit will also obstruct airflow much more. For the record I've knowledgeable no heat issues and don't foresee it. You're fundamentally paying for one particular thing here: the USB to SATA bridge. If like me you're mainly making use of these with eSata, you don't even care about that and just will need the bonus material: Something to make the tricky drive stand up rather of lay on your desk, and a energy switch. Recognizing the simplicity right here, the Thermaltake vs. Vantec argument boils down to one factor: preference. I tend to not like Thermaltake as a firm in common for bad past experiences with quality and assistance, so I went with Vantec. I'm glad I did. See other thoughts. I wasn't expecting a lot in searching to fulfill my meager need for an eSata connection that also suspends an internal challenging drive vertically. Vantec surprised me by delivering that with style, high top quality color-matched supple included cables, good packaging, documentation, and even a driver CD. No clue why anybody would need to have a driver for this (maybe USB help for Windows 95?), but that only adds to my impressed reaction. They even give you an internal SATA to eSATA backplate, which was a big surprise.I've got 3 of these in my midsize workplace, where I'm the pc guy. These let me rapidly pop challenging drives in and out though working as if they were installed internally, letting me clone, fix malware, poor sectors, MBR corruption, etc. My target was to never ever have to tangle with boot CDs/dongles once again (I come across them generally a discomfort), and I achieved it. Now I just rip out the issue HD and pop it in here for easy diagnosis from my clean Computer. Great.

Affordable, intuitive set-up, comes with everything you will need. Ran 1 unit consistently for about 4 months, have had a second unit for a week. Each set up and ran with zero complications, just as advertised. Rather they be gray than white. With two units, it would be good if they locked in some way. The only annoying factor is the Ǘ switch isn't as smoothly operating as it must be--it often takes a jiggle. No heat issue that I can see. I've been operating them with Seagate 1TB drives. The operating temperature limit stated by Seagate is 69C. These start out up at 43C. I've been running each in a constant backup of image files for the last two hours, and the Intelligent reported temperature has only risen to 46C. The heat is not a challenge. Of course, the drives really feel warm on the outside--that's mainly because they're SHEDDING heat.

It worked fine till it died... The initially one I bought (Newegg) came with a DOA power provide. Vantec was pretty excellent about the RMA. The second a single lasted just over a year of intermittent use and careful storage. The power provide quit today. I checked the AC cable - it's got 120V AC going into the power provide. Of course, Vantec's warranty is one year. Vanted spec'ed out a inexpensive power provide. I can recognize the pressure to preserve the price tag low but they went as well far.

Pros - Dirt-simple to install; comes complete with USB & eSATA cables as well as SATA to eSATA Bracket. Cons - White plastic casing will most likely get dirty quick. Knowledgeable minor difficulty with the on/off button sometimes not sticking in position. Information transfer via eSATA is unquestionably the way to go. Talk about quick! I have about 20 HDs that are often swapped in and out of my method, so needless to say - this dock is a welcomed timesaver. I very suggest it.

Product works as advertised. VANTEC appears to have taken all the negative comments created on ThermalTake U0028USU and addressed them right here. For instance, a main complain for the ThermalTake unit is the on/off switch is on the back of the unit. VANTEC's unit has a big white on/off button in the front. A second complain for ThermalTake's unit is the lack of SATA interface. VANTEC has supplied just that. This was a large component of my selection in purchasing this unit. Each design and make quality demands function. Initially issue - The unit noticeably weighs much less than ThermalTake. In reality, the box feels like a affordable plastic box where ThermalTake essentially feels like a paper weight. Just to be fair, when you insert the challenging Drive, it's unlikely the unit will ever tip over. Second problem - The height of the unit is about an inch larger than ThermalTake which causes possible heating concern. These docking stations rely on regular airflow to cool the tough drives. An inch cover a big portion of the difficult drive surface needed for cooling. I've discover the tricky drive docked in VANTEC's docking station get's hot more quickly than in ThermalTake. Third issue - The docking bay door is a looser fit than the a single on ThermalTake's unit. If the challenging drive is only connected by a smaller area at the docking station base, it's no good that I can wiggle the challenging drive from the leading which might essentially harm the connecting interface. VANTEC's unit functions as advertised; they took complaints and addressed accordingly. Nonetheless, their personal style exhibit flaws that will need to be addressed as a competitive product. If ThermalTake addresses the complaints in the subsequent version of the product (on/off button, SATA interface), my selection will be ThermalTake.

None Plugged in device employing eSata, and a 160GB HDD. Recognized proper away and seemed to operate as advertised. Within two minutes of use my computer froze solid. I restarted, and the vantec external no longer worked. The light on the power provide, and unit lights just blink once per second. The unit no longer responded at all. I tried recycling power, a diverse HDD, and switching to usb. Nothing worked, the unit is just dead. I assume I will RMA this, and invest a little additional dollars on some thing better that might essentially function.

Easy disk swap. SATA speed. It's good only if it functions as advertised. Major problem with eSATA connection. IT works fine for the very first handful of instances. Then my HDD stopped working. Thought I had a poor HDD. Put a new one particular in. Then it stopped too after few try. Now I have two poor HDD. Connected them via USA. Both works fine. Tried once more through eSATA connection. Now working. Connected each HDD directly to the mobo. They works but makes weired noise. Connected both by means of icy dock eSATA cage. Not wotking. This cage functions fine as I've been utilizing it for a year with no challenge. Even in this cage, these HDDs are operating only below USB mode. Conclusion. This item somehow ruined my HDDs.

quite quickly and trustworthy so far. usb2 was maxed out at possibly 9-10 mb/s, but eSata is hitting 50-60 mb/s. typically usb2 only ran around four-5 mb/s for tiny files. excellent to get five to 10 times the speed. drive(s) don't fit like a glove or in other words it is a small loose fitting which worries me that it could break in the course of insert or extract. just takes a little a lot more care would recommend it if you tire of moving big amounts of data and grew tired of usb2 speeds, but otherwise it's not fairly as plug-n-play as usb2 is. their is no safe removal method like usb has

Flexible, ultra-quick drive adjustments, multiple interface forms Plastic case could be sturdier I purchased this factor right after seeing 1 at a friends house. As a caution admin, I alternate my backups: first back up to disk A, next time to disk B, subsequent to disk A, etc. This prevents a dilemma which I've had when in the real planet - technique fries itself in mid-backup, resulting in a corrupted backup. With this puppy, I put in the disk proper to the backup and do it. When accomplished, unplug it and put the disk away.Yes, the plastic case seems flimsy. But mine has held up to a couple of dozen modifications so far, so 'seems' is the appropriate word. And due to the fact I'd handled 1 prior to getting, I knew what I was acquiring.I've run it with each firewire and USB to our Macs. No ESATA but, and probably not for a whilst. We don't do everyday backups, that's what Time Machine is for. Cheap, eSATA +USB2. Dual Bay No protection for drives, Drives get hot, only lasted 1 and a half years. I bout this about a year and a half ago and it just died on me today. it won't turn on. It had a very good run and it worked fantastic but you I tips against toaster style external enclosures unless you are consistently swapping out HDDs and don't keep them in there for extended amounts of time. There is no protection for your difficult drives. The hard drives also tend to get quite hot.Anyway if your seeking for a thing affordable and don't plan on keeping this thing on 24 7 like I did then go ahead and get it.

Comes with a sata lead that goes from the mainboard to a blanking-plate (bought a PCI eSATA card along with the dock that I don't require) with the eSATA connection on it. Guess I didn't check to see what the dock came with really. The dock is produced of plastic but it is solid and heavy. It is so much much less of pain in the rear to swap drives working with the dock rather than open up the laptop case each five minutes. None. Does exactly what it says on the tin. Building a modest library of TB HD's rather than getting rooms full of DVD's in boxes so a dock is important for that objective. Don't want to run network storage and shorten the lifespan of HD's and consume power unnecessarily.

Looks nice, works on various operating systems. I also like that it came with the eSATA backplane for my Computer. Has worked with all the drives I've tested with it. I only have a couple of little gripes about it: If you have a three.five" hdd that's a single platter and shorter in height than regular, it wiggles forward and backward fairly a bit and appears able to put a strain on the connections on the bottom. The power button is incredibly tricky and at times will not remain clicked to preserve running. If could have made a request to the company for an accessory, I would have loved for this to come with an eSATA three.five" from drive panel plate. Plugging this into the front of my Pc that's on the ground would be considerably less difficult. All in all for the cost, I'm glad I purchased it. I've even advised it to other tech-savvy friends who aren't set back by tiny "flaws".
