This drive is now in its seventh year of service (I had originally purchased it as my primary drive; now it's Mom's main drive) and fifth version of Windows (while I had it, it was XP Qualified followed by XP MCE; because Mom got it, it's been XP Qualified, Vista Ultimate, and now 7 Ultimate), and it just keeps correct on chugging away. It also has 16 MB of cache/buffer (unheard of for PATA; hence the "Scorched Earth") As well little for even medium or heavy storage duty (Windows XP or newer); a bit noisy compared to newer drives. Though also smaller IMHO for standalone duty, the 16 MB cache tends to make it a wonderful boot drive (along with the rapid 7200 rpm spindle speed).

Very quiet and quick for what it is.Added life to an aging process. No matter what cable, jumper, BIOS configuration I tried, this drive will not show up in the BIOS as a Master drive. It will not show up in the BIOS at all unless it is set to Slave making use of jumpers or Cable Pick - period. The six year old Maxtor (still working perfectly) that this drive replaced shows up as a Master with no difficulty - not this 1. After swapping cables and double checking jumpers and BIOS settings I set it back to CS and let it have the Slave position. XP installed perfectly. It boots as a Slave just fine and has not had a single hiccup. The issue may well be with the laptop's six year old BIOS that is no longer upgradeable. Rather than RMA and spend S&H the drive will keep exactly where it is. I replaced the Maxtor simply because of age. It worked as effectively as it did when it was new, just much slower than the new WD. This one particular is rapidly with XP and virtually silent; even so, I wouldn't use it for something other than XP or Linux due to the 8M cache, and of course capacity. WD makes a really great drive. I don't know what the deal is with this one, but I have owned numerous WD drives and all of them have been good. I have no plans to switch.

None that I knowledgeable This drive is either entirely incompatible with the technique I bought it for or it was defective. How many hours need to a person have to mess with a drive that took nearly a week to arrive (Thanksgiving holiday)? The drive was not recognized in a manner that allowed access. The process would boot and claim that no drive was present. All jumper combinations obtainable by way of Westen Digital web site had been tried and none worked. An old Seagate I had on hand and an old Maxtor each plugged in and worked instantly like an IDE drive is supposed to. The operating drives had been 80GB and 40GB so it is not a size problem.I have nothing great to say about this drive because it did nothing but waste my time needlessly and cost me funds for shipping. Occasionally it is achievable to run into drives that are incompatible rather than defective. In the past I encountered these mostly when some drive was OEM'd specifically to a manufacturer like say HP or DELL and later a huge amount had been sent to a variety of blow out channels because the manufacturer needed to clear space. The drives would function fine in computer system A but would not function properly in computer system B.Regardless, I don't like to waste time on somthing that really should be easy plug it in and go.

This is a quite very good and quite dependable tricky drive. Quiet operation and quick file access. If you don't strategy on storing a lot of video or other large media, this drive will probably last the lifetime of your Pc with no running out of capacity.I very advocate the Western Digital Caviar SE WD800AAJB. Absolutely nothing that I can believe of. I bought my WD800AAJB way back in 2002 and it has been running nearly regularly ever because (I generally leave my Pc running). In fact, I am surprised that it's nonetheless in production - that in itself speaks effectively. I was running Win2000Pro when I 1st installed it, and now running XP, each without having challenge. The drive nevertheless runs quietly and under no circumstances hangs.

Delivered in 21 hours. Arrived in great condition. Running quite quietly. Installed effortlessly. No troubles so far. Value was reasonable and availability of an ATA disk was a plus considering that they are obtaining tougher to find. Assuming it continues to preform as it has so far, I can't feel of any Cons. I wanted this disk to replace a 80GB ATA disk that came in my Laptop five years ago. The present disk was causing marginal boot complications and had also develop into fairly noisy. I have, for a couple of years, produced frequent Image Backups with Acronis TrueImage to present for just such a situation. Upon receiving the new disk, I replaced the old disk with it . The only problem I had was that the new disk was about 1Ǟ" longer than the old 1 which prevented the front panel from fitting. I resolved this by removing two of the four screws that screw in to the side of the disk to guide it into the slot. This let the disk slid in farther and the front panel then fit. I booted to the Acronis Boot Disk and entered the Acronis TrueImage Restore plan, restored my Image and rebooted to a fully operational pc. This disk permitted me to avoid what would have been an eventual hard disk crash.

Bob, I too have encountered difficulties such as yours. My resolution was similar, but involved upgrading to a sata drive. Essentially, I ordered a PCI sata controller (from a organization such as Newegg). I installed the controller and the drivers and then imaged the ATA IDE drive over to a sata drive connected to the controller (I utilized Norton Ghost rather than Accurate Image). Then, I removed the IDE drive and rebooted the system which booted from the sata drive and all was well, so I imaged it to a few DVD's really should I ever require to replace the sata drive in the future. None I must also note that the machine that I was working with was running Windows 98 SE, so prior to imaging it to the sata drive, I ordered & installed the two patches for Win 98/ME from Rudolph Loew to enable windows 98 to use much more than 512몘 megs of RAM and to enable it to use a lot more than a 137 gig tough drive - google Rudolph Loew Patches and you'll find exactly where to get them if you need to have them. I kept 98 on the machine due to the fact my Universal Device Programmer's should be operated from DOS mode (won't operate in a CMD prompt window). The machine now has a 500GB Sata Drive and two-Gigs RAM thanks to Mr. LOEW.

Affordable HD, fantastic for older Computer that can't deal with large drives. Ok this thing does not play nice with HP Pavilion 7966, it would perform as master if there was slave on the same IDE cable, remove the slave and bios would see the drive till you saved and reboot then it was gone. If I put my WD 80gig black drive in, bios finds no issue. If I put blue 80gig in any other Computer I have it works just fine as stand alone master, just not in this HP pavilion 7966. Only way I could get it to be seen on each boot was to jump it as slave and then it would boot up ever time. And before some says a thing about the jumpers, I know all about the jumpers settings, been in the IT field for 14 years. Drive works in other Computer's and other tough drive perform in this Pc, just truth this tough drive and HP Pavilion 7966 don't like each other. So I only knock one particular egg off because I can't say for confident regardless of whether it Pc or HD problem.

Good drive, lasts a long time None If you are not familiar with Western Digital IDE difficult drives, then you most likely don't know about the exclusive jumper setting when using the drive as stand alone single drive on IDE channel. DO NOT USE A JUMPER! Suitable jumper setting for stand alone master is NO JUMPER. Jumpers are only for Master w/Slave, Slave w/Master, or CS (with compatible hardware). It assists to read the instructions very easily identified on WD site.

Operates great. Mine formatted promptly and does what it is supposed to do. No issues what so ever. Just ordered yet another 1 for my old P4 file server for the boot drive. It's not cost-free? Western Digital has generally out performed just about every other drive I have utilized. I still have and use my first WD 80GB drive that was purchased over 9 years ago. You can't go wrong with top quality like this.

To the reviewer thaat says that the drive is not a Caviar SE, I beg to differ. I own one of the *original* PATA/IDE Caviar SE (Special Edition) drives (in the identical size) - it predates the color-coded Caviar line (and their SATA drives, which is why the SE is not in SATA form). By the by, the drive in question (model WD800JB-CRA) is in its eighth year of service (now in Mom's desktop) and is nonetheless running powerful. None. Price +value + longevity = WD
