Supports lots of different file types and plays them flawlessly. There were only 1-2 1080p videos that it wouldn't play properly (pixely picture) but these videos were very demanding, my PC's can't even play them stutter free. But most of my 1080p videos played without a hitch.Doesn't concern me, but instead of composite RCA, I think S-Video or Component would have been better.But other than that, it does everything it says it does. JB Rating: Review Date: 05/13/09	Does the job - Plays all formats. Comment: External hard drive has tons of movies and music. This media player does an excellent job. Using the HDMI hook up (Does not come with player)to your HD TV gives you excellent results. Money well spend. Very satisfied.

Pros:Small size, excellent support of a wide range of audio and video codecs, great support, and custom firmware community as well! Comment: An inexpensive solution to watch your digital media on your tv. I love it, and love the fact that there's a homebrew firmware community!

I tried it with various brands of HD's and it worked without any problems. The HD's were in various brands of external cases an were 500GB to 1TB in size. I highly recommend this product .

It plays everything I have and haven't had to convert anything yet. I bought an HDMI cable for it, and it worked flawlessly. I am extremely happy with it and look forward to watching movies on weekends now without having to burn to cd anymore.

Than the receiver will do the DTS sound for you and you're golden.- Will not power down hard drive when you unmount or turn off unit via remote. So need to unplug usb hard drive- Initial loading of hard drive may take a few minutes. took about 2 min on one 250gb hard drive filled to 30%. So your 1TB drive may take a bit longer. Pros:- Small, compact, sleek looking, low power consumption- great price at $120 right now, purchased for $130 with PM- Plays all DivX and Xvid movies I throw at it- Plays all non-DTS x264 HD movies- Powers a 2.5" laptop 5400 hard drive. Tested with 3 different 2.5" drives, an 80gb, 250 and another 250.- Works well with all USB thumb drives I've thrown at it- Loads fast, after initial 1-2 min wait on first connect of hard drive full of music, pics, videos. Only takes a few seconds.- HDMI, S-Video, Composite, what else do you need Comment: This is a cute and inexpensive way to watch regular xvids, hi def x264, listen to music and view pics on your tv, if you dont have a computer connected to it. I carry mine around with me to friends houses and also my projector. No need for laptops anymore. Very small and fits almost anywhere. Sure it wont play DTS audio in videos, but I knew that when I purchased it. Always read reviews before you buy stuff. come on. And it does not have a network jack, but again knew this ahead of time. For this price you cant get better. If you want more stuff get a Popcorn Hour box or use a laptop. Even than most laptops cannot play x264 video, unless you have a nice new one. BUY THIS TOY, YOU'LL LOVE IT.

Pros:+Plays everything+Nice and small, hardly noticable+Aesthetically pleasing+quick read time from USB drive, only takes a couple second to have everything ready to play after plugging in the drive Comment: I bought this unit last month after being frustrated by not being able to readily watch downloaded content on my TV without waiting to burn it to DVD. This unit does everything. Only a minute to transfer media to my flash drive then plug it in. It's played everything I've thrown at it so far and played it flawlessly.

It plays everything I throw at it. Only gripe is that it doesn't have network support. If I have a new movie, I have to remove my external hard drive to reconnect to my computer then attach it back again to the WDTV. Oh well, maybe on the next firmware update, they will include this.

What it is ...... A journaling file system is a file system that logs changes to a journal (usually a circular log in a dedicated area) before committing them to the main file system. Such file systems are less likely to become corrupted in the event of power failure or system crash If you are using Mac Os X No worries :-) everything still works! If you want it to support it use disk utility to re-format the external disk to MS Dos disk or Mac OS Extended without the (Journaled) option MacEnstein

It seems like WD has pretty good support firmware wise, and there are also a few other 3rd party firmwares that enable other functionality as well. (namely wireless when used with a USB wireless adapter). Doesn't play back DTS natively but can pass through if you have a receiver that supports it via the optical port. If you don't have a receiver, then you'll need to convert your video to something else (like AC3) to get audio.

If you've extracted a DVD to a folder, it will play the main movie. Will read inside .ISO files. I haven't tried subtitles. Very crips menues. CON: MKV files (720p) play fine off drives attached to my desktop PC, but are jerky and sometimes audio unsyn'c with the WDTV (using HDMI). Buy It !

I still use my phillips xvid player as it has a dvd drive but this is another nice gadget to have.

(It's so tiny! Got the box, thought: man this is a small box. Opened the box and saw the player itself only occupies 1/6 of it!) I record my favourite shows on a cheap TV tuner in my computer then paste them on a flash drive when I'm ready to watch them. Also very useful with an external hard drive to copy your DVDs onto so the younger members of your family don't destroy them. It's such a shame to see your favourite movie smashed. (Especially useful for me because the Bose DVD player I have is unable to play some of my DVDs, so I copy it to this and play it off of an external hard drive instead of the original DVD.) All in all I have no regrets and use it more and more as I slowly add my videos and music to it. Perfectly simple to setup, navigate, and play your files on.

Pros:Plays almost any file format.Affordable.Versatile.Great if you have kids who like to destroy DVDs. Comment: I bought this so I could put all my kids DVD's in one place where they wouldn't get destroyed every other week. I tried several file formats including avi, MP4, iso, etc and the WDTV plays them all with great picture and sound. A network interface would be nice but it's understandable at this price point. I use a 1TB drive in an enclosure to store the movies so I just have to carry it back to my rig to load more stuff on it. Individual files can be watched via a USB stick if desired. Je dirait que ca prnd une bonne minute avec que le HD soit détecté.Les menus sont parfois un peu lents. Pros:Pas cher lorsque pricematché avec la compétition.Arrive avec le dernier firmware.Fonctionne vraiment comme promis.Compatible avec les fichiers Bluray m2ts.Assez simple à utiliser.Fini les piles de CD/DVD et Bluray qui traine partout!!!Pas mal configurable.Très bonne images en 1080P (Bluray rip).Ce gadget épatte la gallerie.Prend peu d'espace. Comment: Ce lecteur multimédia est un très bon achat à mon avis. Il est multifonction et la plus belle chose c'est qu'il est capable de lire les fichiers .m2ts des Bluray si la ou les pistes audio du Bluray sont numériques. Donc il est seulement requis de ripper avec AnyDVD le plus gros fichier .m2ts des Bluray et le mettre sur le disque dur et ce lecteur pourra le décoder et le présenter avec l'audio numérique. Au niveau de la qualité l'image, je ne vois pas de diférence entre celel de ce lecteur et celui de mon lecteur Bluray. Les défauts, s'il y en a viennent tout simplement de la mauvaise compression MPEG 2 des Bluray...
theknack Rating: Review Date: 03/22/09	Western Digital Black TV HD Media Player Comment: Just got this unit in March. It works great!. I added a 1TB WD hard drive and it plays 95% of my library. The menu system is simple to use. It even remembers where you left off when stopping a video/movie. You can select the desired resolution. The difference between the composite video and the HDMI is noticeable. Downloaded movies look great! Small footprint and looks good too! I hope they make a PVR one day. That would be the ultimate!

I think the user interface is basic - and that is a good thing - it as useful as your own file management. very simple - very portable and high quality.
