Quiet, Cool and likes to rest which could trigger the device to fail to be recognized. Energy off ,then On and could have to hold the switch for some minutes immediately after Windows 7 or xp 64bit recognize it. However, transfering 340gb 7,000 big video files only took less than three hours. Hopefully it was not the Hitachi2TB-RosewillUSB three credit WD My Book (This is my 3rd one had 2x320gb) )has difficulties with NEC Host Controller USB 3. Impatient men and women may well declare it dead. Many instances, My Book is not recognized even though plugged when (cold/warm) booting up. It specially takes place right after using a significantly newer USB 3 devices. NewEgg Can examine my records. THE Power SAVING AND Safety Attributes Perhaps THE Lead to OF THE Difficulty

Western Digital My Book Essential 3TB USB 3.0 Black
Cons:-the software doesn't really let me backup specific folders

Pros:-large capacity-decent price-software comes with many features-small-ish size-nice to look at/no annoyingly bright front LED
Comment:
I pretty much covered everything in the pros and cons. Regarding the software, it was pretty good. However, the backup function looked like it only backed up entire folders such as your Music, Pictures, Videos etc. It didn't let me choose the subfolders so I ended up just copy/pasting what I wanted to backup. It worked like a charm. All in all I was very impressed with what I got for 150$.

Western Digital My Book Essential 3TB USB 3.0 Black
Cons:The external casing is a bit larger than any that I have used before.

Pros:Perfect for storage of large files (e.g. HD videos)
Comment:
I actually got the 4TB version elsewhere so I'm essentially reviewing that one. All I did was transfer large 4GB+ media files to it until it was about 95% full and then installed XBMC in portable mode to create  an epic media drive that can be used on any computer. Used USB 3.0 with Teracopy and saw and average of about 130MB/s, sometimes jumping to 170MB/s and down to about 100MB/s. No need to mess around in Windows Disk Manager before hand (Windows 7), it just worked out of the box. No comments on the software that it comes with as I had no use for it.

While it worked it was quickly. It died after 6 weeks of incredibly cautious handling. Not certain no matter if it is enclosure of the HDD itself and will not locate out since I don't want to take it apart ahead of sending to manufacturer for RMA. New egg doesn't accepts RMA previous 30 days. I'll update the evaluation as soon as I receive replacement from WD.

None yet. Received a non-working product. The software supplied with this does not let you to completely customize what is backed up. Further, it does not permit an image to be designed for complete restoration later. I got a dud. It takes place. Going through RMA now, and hunting forward to receiving a working drive.Having evaluated the components that have been operating, I can say that there are better alternatives for backup as far as computer software is concerned. Even the backup characteristics of Windows 7 far exceed what WD offers you. So, if you're looking for a USB3 drive with a lot of capacity, this might be a fantastic drive for you (if you get 1 that works), but I wouldn't upgrade into an essentials drive just for the software.

3 TB! Excellent price for a 3 TB drive. Not that rapid. Slow spin up time if it's been idle. I got two of these, and carry them about often simply because I rotate them to another place for offsite backups. No reliability concerns but.USB 3. is a great efficiency increase, but you don't want significantly for backups or a media collection. The drive delivers what it promises. The only query is regardless of whether it promises what you want. For me, the answer is one hundred% yes.

Significant Capacity I bought to of these. Wont unmount beneath Linux Ubuntu based distro "LInuxMint". If you go to safely take away hardware and choose it, the hardrive auto re-mounts itself inside seconds. Also, an additional egg for when you turn off the laptop or computer the External does not spin down disks and turn itself off generating you hold down the energy button for 7 seconds to manually turn it off with tough disks nevertheless spinning. Really undesirable enclosure design! Also no WD help for Linux.

Pros:great price and large storage space, decent speed and WD is usually quality
Comment:
bought this external drive at a price of $140, which is decent. I still don't understand why internal hard drives cost more than external ones, but maybe they produce external ones more I guess. hopefully the prices come down in the future for 4TB hard drives, otherwise I will be getting another 3TB external hard drive.

Purchased this for backing up my personal and school files, may use for a possible media extender setup in the near future. After a little playing around I got it to work on my ASUS RT-N16 router with tomato USB firmware but the write time was terribly slow, about 2 MB/s and it would randomly lose connectivity. So, i reformatted the drive to Ext2 using Easeus Partition Master and upgraded the router firmware to one with GPT support found at: http://yanivhamo.com/tomato/ . Drive now writes at about 7.5 MB/s which is fine in my opinion for working straight from the router. Would definitely recommend to others.

High capacity Unreliable. Had a single energy outage in my residence tonight. Managed to cook the HDD. I dismantled the enclosure, as I have observed electronics issues with the enclosures in the previous, removed the HDD and tried to load in a identified excellent enclosure. No luck. - 3TB, big quantity of space -USB3, more quickly than USB2, which only has 30MB/s tops. It is even more rapidly than eSATA at times- 64MB cache memory, anything less than this won't make sense on a 3TB tricky drive- sensible warm, and quiet when turned on for a while- it is WD, a brand you can trust in difficult drive on your information - green drive, only 5400RPM, and the spin up time is slower than the fantom drive I got (not that it matters)- the energy button is a "software button", it only works following you install the smartware, instead of straight control the energy- the usable space is only about 2.8TB (about 680MB for the software program and docs, excluded this component) soon after the NTFS file technique. I believe it also has to do with with WD use decimal technique ƑMB = 1000KB) rather of binary program that laptop or computer use ƑMB = 1024KB). so you will "automatically" lose 200GB from it- would it be superior if it has eSATA interface also? will price much more of course, think about the USB3 interface expense ฮ more on the identical size - the drive inside is WD30EZRS- using it with the buffalo IFC-PCIE2U3 USB3 card that has NEC chipset, has fairly very good reviews in ama zon (no evaluations right here), in situation you are questioning which USB3 card to get, considering that the tech is new (unless your mobo has the ports)- for some purpose it utilizes micro B plug as an alternative of the standard B. It doesn't hurt to make the connection panel a bit larger to fit the B plug, there is still plenty of room for ventilation- Also, to take benefit of the 64MB cache memory (and the energy of USB3), you need to set the drive policy from "quick removal" to "better efficiency" to get the leading speed, otherwise will be just be a little bit more quickly than USB2, but not a lot. When you use this mode, make confident there is absolutely nothing transferring prior to you use plug the drive out- I use genie backup manager to do backup jobs instead of the smartware, so can't comment significantly on the software program other than able to use the energy button

Unit functions as intended, absolutely nothing special, is what I expected it to be. Nothing. This unit is simply disassembled with a flat head screw driver, there are only two clips to open, then it slides apart very basic like. The HDD inside is the similar as the one particular WD is selling for  with the RAID card. WARNING: This WILL void your warranty of course, and the HDD inside is serial numbered differently then the ones that come "internal", so don't count on to be in a position to pretend it did not come in a enclosure. If you where hunting to purchase a internal 1 or a lot more, if you will need to fill up a Drobo, which now supports these with a firmware update) and don't need the raid card(s), you can save some money if you don't thoughts taking them apart.

Enormous capacity, formats out to two 794GB.You can simply plug and play this drive and it works fantastic -- on my XP64 system, it automatically loads the drivers as soon as you plug it in, and it's great to go.However, I like a totally clean drive with no the WD proprietary software on there, and for this it worked wonderful as well. Making use of the diskpart command in XP64, I converted the partition to GPT from MBR and am formatting it out to two.8TB as I sort this. This will take a even though though, most likely more than a day.Drive seems to get slightly warm to the touch, but heat absolutely will not be an concern. The chassis is incredibly well-ventilated. None but. The drive makes use of a USB three. mini plug, which is a tiny weird IMHO.The drive inside appears to be the very same a single that WD is selling for โ.00 more as a bare drive (albeit with the included RAID card). For those who want to use this as an internal drive, it's particularly tempting to take a Dremel to this issue and cut out the drive, therefore saving โ. I am a tiny hesitant although, lead to the casing looks molded on.I would be happier if WD sold the bare drive for the identical 赔 that this sells for rather than 趆. If they want to leave out the RAID card and save themselves some income, good. I doubt most men and women will be employing this as a boot drive anyway.

Major speed boost more than USB 2. USB three. transfer rate nearly as great as my Sata 6 drives. 55.three MB/s Min, 122.7 MB/s Max, 95.9 MB/s Avg, 15.three ms Access time, 183.1 MB/s Burst, 1. % CPU usage making use of HD Tune Pro. This is my second unit, 1st worked perfectly. Second unit was missing the Virtual CD partition which is necessary for the password protection. Immediately after a couple hours with WD, they confirmed that VCD was missing. RMA'd it to newegg and replacement has identical issue. After already paying บ.87 in UPS charges, am not returning this a single. I'll continue to use it as a plain backup drive working with Acronis software program. WD most likely failed to install the VCD on a complete batch of units. I installed the WD smartware, but not the auto backup portion of it, so I don't know how well it functions. The password protection works as advertised, but you have to turn the drive on and off using its power switch on the back of the unit. It you eject it making use of the Safely Eliminate Hardware routine in Windows 7, you can't get to the unlock utility unless you unplug/plug in the USB cable or power cable.

Excellent price, arrived in a timely fashion, and it doesn't look nearly as ugly as Seagate's similar products. Arrived DOA. I referred to as WDC and they said that it could be replaced for totally free but only with a refurb; to get a new replacement I'd have to go by way of the retailer. So I'm out the ม return shipping fee. Here's to hoping that Š arrives in far better condition.

this external tough drive is less expensive than the internal version. i was able to use this drive as in internal drive. (please know that removing the drive from it's enclosure voids the warranty)yes, you require to recognize that this drive is not effortlessly recognized in every person's present configuration... be ready to update your bios, update your controller's drivers, know about the 2.19TB MBR limitation, know that GUID addresses the limitation and lets you create partitions of any size, AND mainly because of that you CAN use this drive in operating systems that are 32-bit! Initially off, I chose the My Book version of this 3TB drive mainly because it was cheaper and did not demand the additional controller card. I took the external hard drive apart for its drive ƕ screws total, three minutes). A person else on here claimed that WD's My Book drives utilised proprietary connections -- this is not true; the drive has a normal SATA information and energy connectors.Next, I utilised a 5yr old Dell Dimension 9100 (Windows 7 32-bit) with a Intel ICH7R onboard controller. Crucial, install Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) Version: 10.1..1008! I employed this computer because it was sitting around, doing absolutely nothing.... figured it would be a good file server.I am not using these drives to boot Windows... I have a separate, smaller driver for that. The drives are recognized as 2.72TB. Utilizing the Windows Disk Utility Management, I developed a Mirrored Disk. (I would hate to have one of these huge boys die -- I also don't see any handy way to backup such a tough drive).
