Fantastic, compact unit. Sturdy and doesn't get too hot. Easy install. By no means had a issue. The indicator light on the front gets annoying when there is activity on the drive. It flashes red to blue which is sufficient to give you a seizure. Excellent for the value. I'm getting an additional one as soon as they are in stock.

Got two of these for 2 Seagate 500gb 16mb cache 7200 RPM Sata II. Was employing on a daisy chain for photo backups. It operate as it is advertised. It was a matter of putting the difficult drive in and plug it in. Uncomplicated as that. Reliable, silence (absorved my HDD noise) the casing itself has no noise since it has no fan. - Dissipate heat extremely nicely. Very nicely built. I work with large chunks of files. Once I ordered, I could not sustain reasonable speeds. It would start out at 39 mb/s and come all the way down to 10 mb/s and stay. Tried separate connections (no daisy chain) tried a new 1394 board, drivers anything. But it never ever sustained the right speed. That's when I did far more research and I identified out that this casing does not have the normal Oxford Chipset. Oxford chipsets are known for their reliability and for becoming 1 of the "standard" chipset to use as comparison. Like I stated the casing is very good. But if you are seeking for a more serious casing attempt WiebeTech or OCW casings. They carry the Oxford 924 chipsets. One of the fastest and far more stable chipsets ever built from Oxford Semi. Also, New Egg must put on the item information what type of chipsets these casings have. It would prevent me a 22 dollars return shipment expense and 15% restocking fee.

-Aluminum case, very good for temps and fairly rugged-A lot of connectivity selections-Comes with all the cables you will need, and they're very good good quality-Stackable with other macally cases (at least in the PHR series)-Rubber 'rails' act to lower vibration transmission to your desk or shelf-two Firewire ports so you can 'chain' drives-This will be my third macally, and if I need to have an additional external I'd get this one once more. -Crazy macally red/blue activity LED. On an older model I ended up putting a resistor inline so that the LED wasn't as bright. The flash can be hypnotic in a dark room.-The power brick, it's external and the connection is less than what I'd call 'solid' or 'positive lock'. I'd rather have a wall-wart sort than the inline brick.-The way the 'tray' is installed when installing a hard drive into the case is a bit finicky, I'm glad I only have to do it as soon as-The SATA cable is odd, the orientation of the port on the board and the truth that each ends of the cable are 90's mean you have to put a weird twist/flip in the cable inside the case to connect a drive. Consider flipping the HD upside down like I did.-Slightly bigger, as far as three.five inch cases go (compared to say, a LaCie Porsche, which is about as little as you can get.) Also rather heavy. My greatest complaint with macally situations, and indeed, most three.five and five.5 inch enclosures, the power bricks, are kind of maddening to me. I comprehend why they use them, over say, a regular 3 prong connector like a power provide, since it keeps the heat of the ac/dc converter out of the case and makes it possible for the overall package to be smaller. I just wish they'd use a thing other than the S-Video/PS-two keyboard style connector, as the ones used on the macally circumstances go in upside down and don't positively 'lock'. If you bear in mind plugging and unplugging PS-2 keyboards a lot, you'll be familiar with the feeling. The macally is larger than some drives, it's a lot more on the chunky side, but the shell is all aluminum and so the drive is generally bulletproof. Makes up for it, in my mind. Most of the negatives in my mind are moot points if you don't transport the drive, when it's set up you never ever have to be concerned about the size, power provide, the SATA cable, or installation.

This is a excellent enclosure IF yours comes with an Oxford chipset. However, there's no way to tell if you're gonna get one. I ordered two of these, and one of them had the Oxford, and the other didn't. I was on the verge of giving up on 750GB of critical information because the enclosure the drive was in was so flaky. At numerous moments the drive either would not mount, or would not eject. Occasionally my method just could not see it at all, and at other times it would die in the middle of a big transfer. The distinction is clear just from a visual inspection - the Oxford chip is large and the SST chip is tiny. The Oxford circuit board mainly silver with packed components, whilst the SST board is mostly green and bare. I wouldn't recommend this enclosure till NewEgg starts including controller chip data, mainly because as it stands, Macally isn't being consistent with this and there's no way to tell what you're going to get until you have it in your hands.

The enclosure is solidly constructed - except as noted beneath. Nicely finished. very reasonable price tag. There are two sata data cables inside. Both must be attached via connectors to the bridge board (the other end of the connectors get attached to your sata drive). The unit I received had the 7 pin sata cable broken off were it attaches to the bridge board. The truth that it was broken caused me to examine the bridge board connector closely - jeeez, is it flimsy! I think the people today at the factory need to have mounted the cable - and then knocked it off when they closed the enclosure.I wanted to exchange it for the exact same unit, but I just have no confidence in the flimsy connector. I emailed Macally - they didn't bother to get back to me.This is 1 of the 1st shipments of this new enclosure. Maybe issues will get much better over time. Newegg is the finest. I called them and they just took care of it. I can't say sufficient great things about newegg.

Sata internal interface, Nice size and theoretical working product. Following 1 day and attempting 4 diverse SATA drives, differing brands and capacities on unique computers, it won't full a single transfer of information. Keeps dropping the device in mid-transfer of any volume with a variety of errors. Tried FW, USB, and SATA external connections, with the very same exact results. I have utilized the older ATA version of this very same enclosure (all versions) for years with excellent results, but this SATA enclosure is buggy. Hope Macally gets it together and buys a greater internal interface card/chipset in their next round development. The only reason to go to this more than the older ATA version is the overall capacities in SATA nowadays, and the potential speed of the SATA external connection,(if it would operate). Receiving extremely disappointed in most external enclosures anymore, most are junk and manufacturing is receiving worse overall not superior. There are a couple of gems in product lines out there but sadly this is not one particular of them. RMA back to Newegg and try once more. btw, Newegg rocks, I ordered on a Wednesday night and had my order in hand on Friday morning with regular ground shipping! Thanks Newegg!!!!

This is my second drive enclosure from the corporation and I dig it. It's not some crazy, more quickly than a raid, enclosure, but count on it doing better than nearly any other enclosure...each in terms of speed and reliability. Doesn't have a fan...which is strange for the greater cost range. Appears to be fine now, but gets pretty hot soon after Long backups. Nothin crazy...but know that drives don't last longer because they've been hot a lot in their lifetime. No what I mean?!?! I would suggest this style of Macally to everyone.

Works nicely, effortlessly about to swap drives I don't like the energy supply connector it puts to considerably anxiety on the the connection and now the enclosure won't work unless the enclosure is sitting upside down.

This is the second of these enclosures that I have bought from Newegg. It is properly built, the aluminum case style with well developed. Due to the aluminum case style, superior heat dissipation is achieved. Have employed with no issues with PC and Mac format. I like the range of interfaces supported, USB2., eSATA, and 1394a. Not positive why the 1394b (Firewire 800) equipped model is priced so much far more? There are other producers with 1394b interface that are additional reasonably priced. The usual impeccable Newegg sales and service is with out equal.

Has been running 24ǝ for over a year without a hitch. This is my boot drive for the Mac mini I use at residence. The mini and this drive run SETI@home continuously if I am not doing iMovie editing. A Hitachi drive is performing yeoman's function inside. none good value. I am not certain if I will want the eSATA connector. The Firewire 800 model expenses too much.

Comment:
Universal interface with USB, Firewire and eSATA. Quick. Rubber suspension mount makes this case extraordinarily quiet. Proprietary DIN power plug rather of newer mini plug. This is an great SATA case. I own three Macally external circumstances and this one is the finest of three. I also own the newer mini Mac Pro searching case (GS350SUA) which is a great deal louder than this 1 due to the lack of suspension mount. There is no challenge with internal SATA and energy connector as some other individuals complained. It's just a well produced case.
