I could not stress this enough. Although the performance is good, the fans are very loud. Even my fans taht came with my tower (apevia cruiser) was quieter than the cpu fan! o wellz i guess i would have to live wtih it. This is a great upgrade for me. I would recommend thisif it goes on sale :)

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad-Core Socket AM2+ Processor
Cons:3600mhz ht.

Pros:Easy no fuss overclocking, nice stock heatsink with heatpipes, as usual drop  in cpu boot and all is good.

I grabbed this at $230 with a bunch of free games. O/c'd it to 17.5x200 1.4v under tuniq tower 120 h/f 29c and 40c underload. This cpu does make a big difference in gaming compared to the x2 6000 o/c 3.4ghz paired with gtx280 1680x1050 x4 aa/ x8 af High Quality , 3d06 default high 17xxx overall score with the x2 6000 oc low 11xxx on a good day.

Cons:- stock heat sink sucks, Im getting Arctic Cooling freezer 64 pro- my cpu has a scratch on the die, but w/e it works- those 3 games are oems. and they look like dled and burnt into discs. 1 of them didnt work.

Pros:Great CPU! Great for overclocking. and it also comes with 3 free games.
Comment:
Overall, this is a great cpu. I switched from intel to amd just because this cpu's price dropped. It has good overclocking protential.

Cons:None

Pros:CheapGreat for OCingUnlocked Mulitplier
Comment:
Arrived with my new system a few days ago. So far so good, coming from a P4 huge improvement. 1st AMD build, compared to i7 it's a great deal. Don't need the latest products like i7. If you can justify your purchase with your uses, go for i7. Not a significant difference for me. If I had extra cash I don't think I would buy the i7 atm.. unless I am using like insane multi thread applications.. Q9550 is also good but I went with this because it was cheaper :D

Pros:-Unlocked Multiplier-High stock Clock-AM2+ has a great upgrade path

Bought this for a friend's gaming PC. The unlocked multiplier is a bonus that is much appreciated. Bang for buck I think going AM2+ for a system is the best path right now.

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad-Core Socket AM2+ Processor
Cons:None

Pros:Really Fast, Cheap, Very Overclockable, Quad Core, 8MB Cache
Comment:
This is an amazing processor, I've got mines OC'd to 3.7GHZ, most people get it at 3.8-4.0GHZ Prime stable.. I upgraded from a Core 2 Duo system, which was also very fast, but I saw significant improvement of desktop/gaming/application performance, def worth the buy, as far as I know its faster then Core 2 Quad for most part, and even faster then i7 on games.. I did a lot of research before buying, I was actually going to get an i7, but decided to get this instead, now Im running 4870's Crossfire X, 4GB Memory, 1TB HD, this is an amazing setup... This is for Enthusiasts who don't want to break the bank..

Pros:AMAZING, does its job for the price for sure.

This is an amazing CPU for the price for sure. But if you had the extra cash i would honestly get the i7 920. I am very happy with this anyway, and i can't wait to overclock this.

Pros:Value!Runs CoolUses Cheap DDR2 Ram
Comment:
If you're on a budget this is the chip to have. My first AMD build - just couldn't pass up the price. AMD will sell a ton of these and hopefully save the company. Very pleased with how this performs on an Asus M3A78 with a Radeon 4870 and 4 gigs.

Pros:Price Performance

I bought this to replace my 5000+ Black Edition; I have it overclocked to 3.5Ghz at 1.4Volts; Using the Scythe Reeven cooler with no heat issues, idles around 33-35c and load 48c. Nice performace boost using ConvertXtoDVD. I am not sure what the previous reviewer was talking about, but this CPU is a nice upgrade over the aging Q6600.

Cons:nothing bad with it

Pros:it is really powerfull
Comment:
I love it.It is a really good CPU. I can play crysis at 1600 * 1200 max settings which plays it really smoothly. Some PC reviews say that they get 4,100 in 3dmark06, but I get 4,557 and it is not even overclocked. It is not the best CPU but it is really goood, and accesible.I fully recomend it.tumbs up to AMD, I overclock it to 3.5 GHz, and 3dmark06 5,015 points.

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad-Core Socket AM2+ Processor
Cons:- Not as fast as Intel Core I7

Pros:- Fastest AMD CPU Out There.- 45NM Technology.- Quad Core.- Price.- Fits My M2N32-SLI Deluxe Mobo!
Comment:
Wanting to upgrade to a quad-core cpu, but not wanting to have to spent alot of money on upgrading my motherboard, I took a chance and bought this cpu because I wanted AMD's fastest chip, and I wanted to see if it would run on an older Nvidia 590-based ASUS M2N32-SLI Delxe motherboard. After taking the AMD 6000 CPU out and putting the 940 in, the computer started without any problems. Windows recognizes four-cores, and the BIOS says unknown processor, but it works great.Rather than having to buy a new CPU & Mobo, I was able to just buy the CPU, which saved me money in the end.Highly recommended it!

Comment:
Was in desperate need of a new computer, it was probably 4 years old. got looking and decided on an AMD fairly easily, never been a huge fan of Intel, but not so much that i wouldn't consider one. was looking at the original Phenom X4 thinking about going for the 9550 but held off long enough that this came out, after a while i decided to build it along with an Asus M3A70-Pro, 4gigs of G.Skill memory, and a Sapphire 4650. at first i thought it was a dead proc or mobo, as it wouldn't' post, but turns out to be an old Bios, updated using a friends Athlon 64x2 and it ran great. no complaints and using Asus probe i saw an idle temp of 22 degrees Celsius. and had folding running on 3 cores overnight (all at 100%) and it was showing a temp of 37-39 degrees Celsius. all in all very happy with this purchase, it should last me a long time.

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad-Core Socket AM2+ Processor
Cons:Motherboard compatibility may be an issue.

Pros:Cheap performance quad core
Comment:
I was in the market for a new computer and I was considering the Intel Q9550 quad core processors. Just before my purchase the Phenom II's came out with similar performance and a much lower price. So I changed my mind and decided to give AMD my hard earned money. The only real problem I've had with this great CPU is motherboard compatibility. I bought the ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe and sure enough the CPU wasn't recognized by the Bios. It did post, and updating the Bios was incredably easy (compared to other motherboards I've owned). Popped the new bios onto a USB drive, plugged it into the computer and booted into Bios. Then I ran the ASUS Bios update  ultility and loaded the new Bios off the usb drive. Everything works great now! This is (or was at the time of purchase) cheaper, more energy efficient, and cooler than the equivalent Intel processor. I have zero complaints and it was a great upgrade from my Athlon 64 3200+.

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad-Core Socket AM2+ Processor
Cons:Its not as good as an i7..but its also cheaper and meant to ocmpete iwth the q9550

Pros:Unlocked multiplier, great price, great stock speeds, far better than original phenom, overclocking headroom, nice stock HSF included as well
Comment:
Have this in my asus m3a79-t, oced to 3.5ghz by upping the multi and slightly upping cpu voltage, temps still around 56c at max load for an hour with stock hsf and thermals. With an aftermarket cooler i could easily take this to 4gz maybe more, once i get a vendetta 2 ill update  my review with the results.

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad-Core Socket AM2+ Processor
Cons:oc past 3.5 needs more voltage and therefore power consumption suffers

Pros:Price (Price matched), AM2 board compatible, OC's nicely. In gaming it's competing with the I7.
Comment:
Overall this is a very nice cpu.. works like a charm.. can of to 3.5 on stock voltage (thereby keeping power consumption almost at stock).. and can be oc'd to 3.8/3.9 easily on many motherboards (4ghz is possible but very very hard to do and with alot of horseshoes). Heat is not the limiting factor even with a decent air cooler. Performance is very nice overall and it can compete with the i7 in games for much less $$$. AMD deserves the praise on this one.. It's nice to see they are back :)

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad-Core Socket AM2+ Processor
Cons:none

Pros:This proc has blown me away, 3.83Ghz, 1.45v, and has yet to hit 50 degrees under load, very fast, what more can I say.
Comment:
AMD does not get enough credit, this is not an i7 but care, to be able to pop this unit into your am2+ board and have this much of a boost in performance is very sweet thing indeed. I am air cooling this with zalman cnps7500-cu, and the temps are unreal, highly recommended purchase.

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad-Core Socket AM2+ Processor
Cons:-A bit expensive-Released late

Pros:-Very big improvement over the 9850-Overclocks quite easily-Doesn't require a 400$ board to be ran at it's full potential
Comment:
I have this cpu for 3 weeks now and it's the best purchase I did for my rig in a long time.My old phenom 9850 was on the verge of bottlenecking my cards and the 940 was just what I needed. In 2 days of overclocking I managed to have it stable at 3.9GHz and even if I didn't reach 4GHz, I am very satisfied with it.5 stars for sure :)PS: don't expect to buy this cpu and have it stable at 4GHz, it's nearly impossible unless you are really lucky or don't mind having an unstable cpu.

I have been waiting for the Deneb based Phenom for a long time now. I must say it was worth the wait. Ater updating my BIOS, and with the stock cooler, I got this baby to 3.6ghz right out of the box! I set the multiplier to 18x and voltage to 1.55. I know I could get it up higher if I went at it some more. This improved my 3D Mark Vantage score by 5000. All my games play better! My Cysis benchmark average fps went from 32 to 43 on high settings! Im happy:) And It got here in less than 24hrs!! AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad-Core Socket AM2+ Processor
Cons:-NONE cept the price, would have been happier w/ just under 300, but it is brand new with unlocked multiplier, and I hear when overclocked matches two thousand dollar intel q9770 extreme in alot of benchmarks.....

Pros:-not intel...jk.-very cool-easily overclocked, 3.6ghz w/Arctic Cooling Freezer 64:idle-34C Prime95:51C-seemingly limitless overclocking, I could push the voltage almost to 1.6v with no temp spiking, never seen it above 55C even at my prime95 attempt at 4.0ghz
Comment:
I have Asus M3A32-MVP wifi edition, which is 790fx chipset sb600, and was still able to acheive 3.6 easily, The 790GX motherboards with the updated South Bridge have even more headroom for overclocking.....I'd say u'd have no prob reaching 3.8 will decent air cooling. All in all AMD is back, and no matter what fanboys say just look at the gaming benchmarks(neck and neck w/Core i7's), and price performance ratio. Bottom line if your on a budget AMD has the advantage right now.....If you have way too much money and must have nothing but the best for bragging rights go intel and triple channel, and spend up to 500 on a motherboard....go ahead.....

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad-Core Socket AM2+ Processor
Cons:Canadian prices NEED to drop. Paying $399cnd = $319usd. Listed for $275usd in U.S.A. Probably needed to beat Q9550 outright to gain more respect.

Pros:BIOS update  and pops right into an AM2+ board. Unlocked multiplier gives you an quick and dirty O/CMajor improvement over Phenom IHit's over 120fps in games (minus Crysis...go figure) which is equivalent to Q9550 (1-15fps difference in most website reviews)Encoding it exchanges blows with Q9550, each winning by 2 seconds on avg.
Comment:
I bought this on release day for $399 out the door (shipping, tax, the good insurance/RMA) w/ the instant rebate offered. Upgraded from a X2 5000+ BE n 3.2Ghz. Big difference.I am running it with a Gigabyte MA790GP-DS4H 790GX, BIOS F3h. BIOS F3i, F3O to play with still. Hitting 3.815Ghz with a multi of 19x and voltage of 1.5v with OCZ Vendetta II. 37C idle, 49-52C load - should i move it outside with these bloody cold temps we've been getting lol. NB I've hit 2400Mhz so far.18.129 SuperPi is my PB, 14550 3DMark06 w/ 8800GT 512MB G92 n 691/1023.I have not found a prime95 stable for more than 1 hour...yet. I haven't had much time since I received this. :(Games run smooth with high frame rates on my 24" 1920x1200 monitor. Ordered this 11:30AM EST (9:30AM PST) on Thurs Jan 8th. Express shipping for $9.99. Received it Fri Jan 9th 7:00PM EST (4:00PM PST). From B.C. to Ontario.Excellent job NCIX/UPS! Thank you!All in all, if you have a AM2 board...this cpu makes up for Phenom I.If you are building a whole new rig, no reason not to consider and thoroughly read 3-4 benchmark reviews. Anandtech is a great start. It is not a i7 killer (nor was it suppose to be) but a step in the right direction to get back into the game. As well, bring the stupid prices of Intel down.Check out AMD section on XtremeSystems.org for great list of what these cpu's can do on Air, Water, DICE, LN2 This review was modfied by poster @ 01-15-09 05:02 AM
