ASUS RT-N66U Dual Band Wireless N900 Ultra Thin Gigabit Router 2.4/5GHZ
Cons:- encountered some issues with 5 GHz

Pros:- stunning looks- compatible with third-party firmwares- IPv6 compatible- great coverage- USB ports
Comment:
As I exclusively use third-party firmwares, my impressions of this router will be based on my experience with them. As soon as I got this router I flashed TomatoUSB (Shibby) and I am very satisfied. I am getting a great range and haven't found one place in the house where I am losing wireless connectivity. I did encounter some stability issues using the 5 GHz band, however it is highly possible that it is due to the firmware I am using instead of being a hardware issue. Aesthetics-wise, I love the elegant look of the router. IPv6 works out of the box.

ASUS RT-N66U Dual Band Wireless N900 Ultra Thin Gigabit Router 2.4/5GHZ
Cons:Faulty LAN Port out of the box. Does not light up and connects only at 100 Mbps half duplex. Other Lan Ports seem fine as changing to LAN Port 2, LED lights up and connects - set to auto-negotiate - at 1000 Mbps full duplex

Pros:Exellent construction, expected high speed and range.
Comment:
An overall excellent router which is probably a better choice at this moment than the AC66U which I was considering. Firmware is still not completely optimised with the n66u but is better than the situation with the ac66u.Just unfortunate that I received a defective unit. I am thus giving this 4 stars for a bit of sub-par QC but to be expected at the price.

ASUS RT-N66U Dual Band Wireless N900 Ultra Thin Gigabit Router 2.4/5GHZ
Cons:Firmware not as full-featured as alternative firmwareRuns very hotStatus lights should be on the front, not the topPrice, although quality and performance costs

Pros:FAST - both wireless and wiredExtreme wireless rangeDual, simultaneous 802.11n 2.4 and 5.0 GHz bands3G/4G dongle backup WAN capability
Comment:
I got a faster Internet connection and finally it looked like my ancient WRT54GL with DD-WRT was slowing me down. Time for a router upgrade.I did a lot of research, mostly on smallnetbuilder.com, and this is probably the fastest 802.11n router out there.I did tests using iperf, measuring total SIMULTANEOUS bandwidth from two wireless clients to a wired client, then to another wired client, and this confirmed it is indeed a fast router:- wireless, 2.4 GHz, maximum bandwidth 42.7 Mbps- wireless, 5.0 GHz, maximum bandwidth 123.7 Mbps- wired gigabit, maximum bandwidth 800 Mbps2.4 GHz was not terribly impressive in my case, I believe due to interference because using 40 MHz channels was worse. Good performance at 5.0 GHz though, particularly with 40 MHz channels. Wired speed seems to be limited more by the clients than the switch, I got different (lower) results using a different gigabit LAN client. The range is impressive. I have two 802.11g clients that report wireless strength. One of them a floor up measures 95-99% wireless strength. The other a floor down and in the absolute opposite corner of the house measures 75-90% strength. Even a little handheld device with a very poor antenna reports 60-70% signal here. This is about as far away as you can get and still be in our admittedly small house.Cosmetically the router is very nice, with a carbon-fibre-like pattern on top and a thin wedge profile. The lights are on top, shining through the carbon-fibre pattern - this mutes those blue LEDs which would be way too bright otherwise. Neat but for my purposes the lights would have been better on the front so that I could see them from a sitting position as this router is mounted high. Build quality seems good, the unit feels solid. It runs surprisingly hot although not hot enough to burn fingers even when held continuously. The stand is odd - it doesn't fit the router particularly well and it doesn't lock into place, relying on friction alone. I used it differently than pictured above, I slid it under the router and wedged the short end of the stand under the central antenna, this raises the router 30 degrees or so, allowing airflow underneath and making the port lights a little more visible.I won't say the included firmware is bad, but if you're used to DD-WRT alternative firmware, it feels quite restrictive. It's rather simplistic for something so expensive and complex. The only definite bug is in the Client Status sidebar, it misses new clients and displays old data even after a refresh or a reboot. A nice feature is that it displays clients with their own webpages (printers, WAPs, switches etc.) as a clickable link which will bring you to their webpages.I will definitely be trying alternative firmware on this, starting with ASUSWRT-Merlin, then perhaps Tomato or DD-WRT. I miss things like OUI lookups that can tell you what manufacturer a MAC is assigned to, spectral graphing and noisefloor calibration, plus scripting to allow things like ad blocking.I didn't test the USB ports aside from verifying that they work. They allow file sharing over (W)LAN or WAN via Samba, FTP, etc. This isn't something I'd do - I'd rather use a dedicated device for this rather than shoehorning it into a router. Leave your router as a router! What's more interesting about the USB ports is that you can plug a 3G/4G dongle into them. The router will use it as a backup WAN connection in case the wired WAN connection fails. Neat, but it looks like Rogers' current device isn't supported...Definitely recommended for its superb wireless performance and range.

This is by far the best router I've owned. It replaced my D-Link DGL-4500 which would auto reboot itself every 12 - 24 hours.I get full signal strength on both floors in my home and around my property.Depending where you live, you may want to enable "Hide SSID" and set a really secure password. The wireless is really that good and you don't want anyone using your wifi :)

Got this to replace my trusty wrt54gl tomato router and couldn't be happier with it. I'm using it to stream content to my HTPC over wireless and it does that perfectly. The user interface is nice and setup is quick and easy for novice users. I also enjoy the look of the router with the black diamond pattern finish, very sleek and high tech looking.

Cons:Antenna by the power adapter runs very hotPoor 5GHz bandwidth coverage (location dependent)

Pros:Excellent 2.4GHz bandwidth coverageEasy set-upStand to prop up router
Comment:
I am very impressed with this router. I previously used only Linksys routers but decided to try this based on a lot of positive reviews. I can honestly say this router has earned its ratings. I have better 2.4GHz coverage compared to my previous Linksys WRT400N. 5.0GHz, however, only offers a minor improvent in coverage. I am impressed with the speed of it though (on 2.4GHz band). Way better than what I was getting with the Linksys. This unit does run hot if lying flat, so I would definitely suggest propping it up with the provided stand. Provides better airflow and cooler unit. Also, the antenna by the power adapter cable runs extremely hot at the base compared to the other two antennae.Flashed it with Merlin firmware which improves stability of the default firmware. Even Asus uses some of its improvements in its own updates. Definitely something to flash if you're only looking for stability over features.

Cons:The software is still a bit rough around the edges (but thankfully still regularly updated)

Pros:Powerful hardware with almost every feature you could think of
Comment:
This router would be perfect, if it wasn't for various bugs still present in the firmware at the time of writing. However Asus have already released 3 updates in the past month or so, so they seem dedicated to fixing things as fast as possible, so I would still recommend it to anyone looking for a high-end home/office router.

Oh man, When i bought this router I thought I need a 450 wireless adapter to make this fly. I only use the 2.4 connection and it is very fast to my previous router D-link DIR-615 (PoS) compare to this router. It is amazing, i bought it for 159.99 because of the great reviews and I didn't get the newer one cause there are lots of bad review on the newest model. So glad that I bought it. It is only my first day, i am pretty sure i will enjoy it for awhile.Wuhuuuu!

I really love this router. I bought it to replace my D-Link Dir-615 when it broke. Couldn't be happier.I flashed DD-WRT Mega on it almost immediately and it works like a charm. It is also perfect for my needs. I recently switched my ISP and my current one uses PPPoE to connect to the Internet. Since I want to use a VPN on my router, this posed a problem with my D-Link, because it didn't have enough flash memory to install a Mega version of DD-WRT.This one has a lot of memory, so it's not a problem.

The only bad thing I could say about the router is the design of the chassis. It makes it a little hard to find the right spot to set it up. Confging the router was easy, good strong signal across all three floors of a house. Used this to replace a Dlink 655.

Pros:Awesome fast WiFi connection! Streaming 1080p to my 50' in the living room where all other routers failed with lag issues! Download torrents and NZB files directly to expansion drives connected to the back of the routers USB ports. 256mb of ram is quite awesome!!!

Pros:- Easy to configure (even advanced options like VPN)- FAST router. Interface, network, etc.- Excellent range both inside and out- 3 removable antenna's- Great looking router
Comment:
This is a fantastic router. I've been using Linksys for all routers in the past and have always reverted to installing DD-WRT or Tomato firmware on them to get the functionality required. No more. This router is fantastic. Easy to configure, Easy to set up and has a great user interface. I was able to configure the VPN for this router in under 2 minutes with testing included. Amazing.Asus has really done an outstanding job with this thing. Range is amazing, and if you need more it does have 3 removable antenna's so upgrading is very possible. My wife is not very tech savvy and she was able to log into the interface and set up a temporary WIFI guest network in a matter of minutes with no help at all. That says a lot for how well thought out this interface is.Price is a bit extreme, but you really do get what you pay for. I will be recommending this router to all that want the ultimate in control, ease of use and the best user experience on a router.

I'm absolutely please with this router. It is well worth the retail price. If you can get it on sale, consider yourself lucky. I've tried all sorts of Linksys and D-Link routers and none have given me the flexibility of stability of this one. Granted I've only owned it for a week, but I'm still impressed.I'm coming from a Linksys E3000. While the router was perfect and I never had issues with it, I felt it was time to upgrade. I had to reset it about 3 times for the time I owned it. But the lack of features on the web GUI was really annoying. This ASUS router even has a traffic monitor, and tells you what devices are connected at any given time. I'm just so please with the web GUI because it is so easy to use and has a lot of options.
