Also, with the Inspiron, I had to install the initially chip, boot the machine, shut down, then install the second chip. The jump from 256mb to 1024mb was causing the machine to not boot. No issues performing it incrementally.

Absolutely no installation problems, BIOS and each operating systems saw the RAM. Definite efficiency increase across the board! None Running an IBM T-30 laptop, dual booting Windows XP & Ubuntu 6.10. The BIOS instantly saw the RAM. I then booted Ubuntu and it too saw and utilized the RAM. I did some OS updates and restarted and booted into Windows XP. No complications. Certainly beats paying $xxfrom IBM for the identical stick.
