Outstanding Home Solution
Comment:
I was running a RAID 5 with 4TB on a Buffalo NAS Solution however the performance was to say the least lackluster when it came to transfer speeds even on a gigabit lan. WHS has not only solved this problem and made the data even more reliable but it also provided backups of every PC in the house. I'm also an avid remote desktop user and having the WHS website and Terminal Services Server built in are great. This product is worth every penny.

OEM HOME SERVER URP1 WIN3 EN 1PK CD/DVD 10 CLT
Cons:- Sometimes hard to get things to work (such as IIS)

Pros:- Great price- Easy to use
Comment:
With Windows Server 2003 as its base, this is an excellent product! Definitely targeted towards home users and Microsoft have done a fantastic job of simplying the UI so that even the most computer illiterate person can manage it. My only issue was IIS - it is installed by default and set up for remote access to the desktop and they have made it EXTREMELY difficult to set up another website. I'm using host headers and hence I lose SSL, which is not a big deal, but it shouldn't be this hard to get the thing to work.

OEM HOME SERVER URP1 WIN3 EN 1PK CD/DVD 10 CLT
Cons:-Annoying Home Server indicators about the status of the server. Between a computer has not been backed up and spyware protection out of date I am going to strangle it.-No easy way to facilitate an off-site backup for it. If the WHS dies where does your data go?

Pros:-Excellent backup features for up to 10 computers-Interesting remote access feature set-Very easy to use and setup-Runs good on slow hardware, using a Atom 230 with 2GB of ram, gigabit NIC, and 2 x 1.5TB WD Green drives
Comment:
Overall an excellent product for a home. I run it in conjunction with a real Server 2003 64-bit machine just to make backups a lot easier for my vast array of desktop computers.

Check to see if your ISP is blocking ports first
Comment:
This product is great for backing up all my pc's and for accessing files on my local network. But if you plan to use remote access make sure your ISP is not blocking all your ports. I thought just port 80 was block but it turns out my ISP blocks every port and I need to upgrade to the business package to get them unblocked

Works Great, When It Works
Comment:
Locating reliable drivers for WHS is proving to be a challenge. I build a new system just for WHS using an Asus MB with a gigabit port on it. I drivers for that port are not WHS specific. After much research on the WHS Forum, it appears to be an issue with the gigbit port. As of last week, Asus has not release any WHS or even Server 2003 drivers for their MB, so my WHS box continues to kick offline from time to time when moving large files.

OEM HOME SERVER URP1 WIN3 EN 1PK CD/DVD 10 CLT
Cons:Not 100% friendly with non-windows OSes, server is difficult to backup

Pros:Right balance of power and usability, automatic backups, media streaming for the entire network
Comment:
If you have the space and the the patience, this turns any old pc (with a dual core and at least 2gb RAM, is optimal) into a home server that is way ahead of any plain-old NAS. The automatic backups for windows computers on the network is a life-saver, and can be set up by just about anyone.Media streaming and backups make this an absolute buy for anyone considering building their own server.

This is a fantastic product
Comment:
Sure if you want to go beyond what microsof offer you will have to learn but for what the package said no, outside of reading the how to reinstall from bear metal a crash computer, I am even in the beta phase right now with SP3 and it work with all the PC from home edition to vista to windows 7 RC and soon for me the RTM (22 October 2009) release date. Installation was a breeze and if you are not sure that it will work on your old box, download the free trial and you will be able to update from it to the retail version after so nothing to loose. If you are a MAC you could still use it and yes it is like a mac for the plug and just let it sit there do it job and never have to worry and it have a backup freature for the server itself if ever wanted or needed, so this is a total backup solution and it stream video and media file very well in addition to it primary role. You will not be disapointed.

An awsome product
Comment:
Well before I order it the softwsre i look at the reviews and I was impressed what it got, so now I bought it myself and wow it is an awsome product! I was so impressed how it work I even added my mother and brothers to the remote server so they too can enjoy family pics and videos. I am very please with this microsoft product. I gave the features a 4 because I was hoping it had other features like e-mail service, but all and all it's an awsome product.

Excellent program provisionally
Comment:
This is a provisional review, because you can only do so much in two weeks. WHS is installed on an old Emachines computer with one 500 and two 1T hard drives. Installation was easy and straightforward, high marks there. Backup of the three machines attached was slow initially, but that was to be expected. Backups have been proceeding uneventfully ever since. Workspace has been configured on the server, with duplication. If everything works as advertised, the days of losing any data should be over. An unexpected bonus is streaming videos and music to the PS3 and XBox 360. This is much better than viewing the files on computer monitor. The upscaling feature of the PS3 particularly makes a good full screen viewing experience. I will be trying out the remote capabilities when I go on the road, but so far, this is the best, most hassle-free Microsoft experience I've ever had. And a great, cost effective use of an obsolete computer.

This exceeds my expectations
Comment:
I was looking for a way to automatically back up my household PC's and laptops. I built a cheap kit and put two 500 gig harddrives in it and then installed this product. It went in very easily, was installed on all my PC's and now automatically does the backup job just as advertised. The pluses are add on programs like security, remote access and file sharing with automatic duplication across the two drives. Plus, if I ever need more space, I can just plug in another drive.

Pretty good once you can install it.
Comment:
I noticed several people having problems with WHS and it could be due to the fact that you have to leave the installation DVD in the drive during the entire installation process. It does about 15 reboots before it is completed. I had this problem until I figured out what I did wrong and once I got it installed, I must say that is works pretty good. It makes a great server for a small network and beats paying about a thousand dollars for a full version that has features that you probably would not use.

Now that the standars MS bugs have been fixed....
Comment:
I got a trial as soon as it was available. but to my surprise the client software did not work with ANY 64 bit versions of windows! Happy to say that is fixed now and I have had it run with both Windows 7 64 and Vista 64 100% Plan on paying for the full version soon. Basic setup is easy but keep in mind that it DOES take a little while to fully configure with multiple computers on a home network if you have no server experience but the help feature is fantastically well done so even a novice can make it work with a little reading and patience.

Before i bought the full version I used the eval version a few times. It works great. Before you put he system in production though make sure you simulate drive failures, system reinstall, server system drive failure. It's best to know how to recover before you have to recover.

Great Product, Price is right

For anyone who has an old desktop sitting around, get a couple TB of hard drives and set up a WHS. It was easy to install and works great. Now all my laptops and desktops are backed up and all of my media is available on my local network and, if you want, from the internet.

Best Product from Microsoft
Comment:
This is a great product. Installed it on a refurbished HP desktop with 500gb and 40gb sata drives. Everything went automatic. Decided to upgrade the 40gb drive to 750gb drive. Deactiveated the 40gb, installed the 750gb, registered the 750gb and WHS did the rest. Restored a failed HD in a client PC in 15 mins. Why is Microsoft not promoting this product more?!

Remarkable Microsoft Product
Comment:
Install was simple and straightforward - used an old eMachines Desktop we were about to retire, added a 1TB Hitachi drive and a PCI SATA controller (under $100 total) and fired it right up. The initial backup on each system takes forever, but subsequent backups are incremental.

One that Microsoft got right
Comment:
Very nice and easy to step up. Between Home Server and Windows 7 Microsoft now has two GREAT OS's. (Note: After using Windows 7 beta and now RC I would recommend to all my clients to not afraid to which to Windows7 when it is out in retail form.) Home Server and Windows 7 work great together. Its really nice to have 2 stable OS's to work with.

OEM HOME SERVER URP1 WIN3 EN 1PK CD/DVD 10 CLT
Cons:not compatible with mac timemachine

Pros:Ease of useversatilityeasy to add drives
Comment:
I set up a cheap windows home server with a spare computer i had laying around. install was very simple and fast and once it was up and running i had no problems setting up all the accounts for each user. The main reason i got this was to backup my moms highly critical work files. with windows home server you are able to add any kind of hard drive to the storage pool with out the need to match drive sizes and types such as with a raid setup. you can also selectively duplicate your files in order to save on space. i ave not tried the other features of the OS such as media streaming and remote access so i can not comment on those, however from the features that i have tested i give it high regards.
