These are faster than my WD 3Tb Green drive, and seemingly more reliable since the first WD Green drive that was sent was a dud (the second works fine).If you can grab it for $120 or less, just do it.

The first thing I did was to do the firmware upgrade as this seems to solve some of the known issues with this drive.Deducting two stars though, one for the short warranty and the other for concerns over the 2400 hours power on rating. This is only 100 days of continuous use so these are probably not a good choice for a NAS etc.

I can't say for sure which is more reliable, but the faster Seagates are winning me over.

Keep in mind that for windows to recognize more than 2.2tb you need an efi motherboard. The read and write times are as advertised but the random access times are pretty slow. Maybe because it has 3 discs but im not overly impressed.

I couldn't get my motherboard to recognize it as 3TB in Windows, but FreeNAS picked it up no problem. I'll definitely buy more of these.

Pros:- They're very quiet.- Don't get hot at all.- Work well in RAID 0.- Great performance.- 1TB per platter.- Price when on sale. Comment: I put three of these into a Mediasonic HFR2-SU3S2, initialized it as one big GPT partition in Windows 7 x64, then encrypted that using TrueCrypt. A full format using AES ran at 154 MB/s via USB 3.0 on a PC with an i7 875K (first gen so no AES-NI). I'm very pleased with the overall performance. They're pretty much silent and even after writing data for several hours straight weren't the slightest bit hot. I'm so pleased that I decided to buy a fourth to max out the capacity of the Mediasonic. Hopefully the length of the warranty won't be an issue. I only wish they had more capacity. Seagate promised 5TB drives by 2010, but for whatever reason are dragging their heels even though 5TB is perfectly feasible at 1TB per platter. I'm not holding that against them though in the scoring of these drives. I own a few other Seagate drives and have never had any trouble with them, but like all things YMMV.

I decided to take the risk and am now totally happy. It's way faster and less sleepy than my WD Green, and the chirping problem was solved with a firmware update. Four months later, it's perfect.By being larger than 2.2Tb, however, one has to be aware that it may require bios updates, special software install, GUID formatting... I didn't read enough before buying and had to change my usage plans a little, but am totally ok with it now.

Bought 4 of this, had to RMA 1 out of 4 drives as 1 drive constantly dropped by itself in the 4 x 3TB RAID10 array, could not pass SeaTools self test. Pros:Very good deal for price & capacity ratio2 years warranty - NOT 1 Comment: This drive actually has 2 years warranty from Seagate, found out during the RMA process. Bought the drive in March 2012. Seagate site shows that drive is under warranty until March 2014.The Seagate RMA process is very easy to work with. Submitted the RMA yesterday, will see how long it will take to receive the new drive.

Everything seems to be okay for now. I noticed that when I put this hdd in my enclosure, overtime it would generate some heat and get hot. Now I know that's expected since there's not too much ventilation. But due to the 7200 rpm, it tends to get hotter than 5900 rpm or 5200 rpm. Overall good product.
