Great searching enclosure, most cables are supplied. Didn't perform with my 160 GB SATA two.5" drive. Got power but drive couldn't be recognized. D'oh! Ran out and picked up a [manufacturer name deleted] SATA enclosure and it worked promptly with my 160 GB drive, plus (unlike this Vantec) they contain a cable so that you can provide optional 5V energy separately from the USB bus power.

Attractive, shiny black situation. All stell (no plastic components anywhere that I noticed). esata & usb. USB powered (via two ports). Does not come with energy cable (but a single can be bought separately). Integrated usb cable is drab grey, does not match drive. The images on newegg make it appear faded or grey on a single side. It is not. It is shiny, reflective black all more than, except for the chrome cheeks.

Compact, firm and sturdy. AbFab on the screws integrated, 4 for the drive, and two for the cap. Actual Bonus is the E-SATA port on it WITH the Cable AND the E-Sata Head it wold let you put in your desktop. FINGERPRINTS the polished surface on it tends to make it ideal for showing the slightest smudge. Also, the "Y" cable with the energy tap and data, as other people have mentioned, you can just plug the a single into the other (power tap is a pass via) and it performs. This is a 3rd two.5" enclosure for me and the very first ones had a straight cord, no "Y", as well negative NewEgg quit carrying those! I tested it with a straight cord from one particular of the other drives, no troubles, so I scratched my head and tested non-pass-by way of end of the 'Y' only, it worked. you may possibly need to run the energy tap on an OLD laptop, but even there a powered hub negates that. Excellent thing it's pass-via, wouldn't chew up a port this way.

Solid construction, good selection of accessories, lightweight Runs a tiny bit hotter than I'd like Wow - I'm so glad I read the comments on the other competing enclosures. I've bought a lot of external drives more than the years, but this is my very first 2.5" SATA acquire. This item mounts your drive securely Ɣ screws, so no rattles) and has uncomplicated assembly. My 160GB mechanism runs with just one USB port from my Macbook. The speed more than USB appears fine (I haven't run benchmarks or tried ESATA but). The little carrying situation is really really beneficial and has pockets for the tiny accessories. All in all, a extremely nice little solution. Newegg Rocks!

Fast error free operation utilizing USB, have not had a will need to use the eSATA yet, but glad that alternative is there. Only fits slim 2.five drives. The tough drive I took out of my Toshiba laptop did not fit into this enclosure. I have copied Gigs of data to this device and burned various DVD's of data from it and I have not had any troubles.

USB/ eSATA connection. Fastest in eSATA connection mode. USB passthrough power provide is good so you don't require to have an AC adapter, just plug it in AND you don't lost a USB slot, you can plug into the back of the USB adapter. Incredibly nicely developed None eSATA is so a lot quicker than USB two., it desires to be pushed a lot more.

Initially of all, it has a incredibly cool looking. I've tested this enclosure with my Fujitsu MHY2250BH 250GB 5400RPM SATA mobile hard drive. Installation process was smooth and uncomplicated. First connected with eSATA with a 5V USB power supply. Transferring data is lighting fast and the measured sustaining transfer rate is about 49MB/s. This made me really satisfied.I utilised the supplied USB cable to connect it on my Dell notebook. The device was detected correct away and everything was nonetheless working fine. None. But if I have to list one particular, the surface of the enclosure appears quite easy to get scratched, a little like earlier version of iPod Nano. Shipping cost was a little also high (ground UPS charged me Ű) in comparison to the item value itself.

My enclosure uses the JM20339 chipset (printed inside the enclosure... on the chipset). On a whim I tested it with a 500GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA three.0Gb/s notebook tricky drive (from Newegg) -- and it operates. Formats to roughly 465GB and works nicely with Windows XP, Vista, and on my Mac in OS X 10.5.Two long screws on the outside open the device; 4 brief screws on the inside secure the drive to the circuit board. It is the most securely built notebook tough drive enclosure I've utilised to date. I'm specific it would survive road targeted traffic.I like the USB mini-b connection (as opposed to an attached cable). I can carry One particular cable to power this enclosure, my GPS device, a digital camera, and a multi-format card reader.Till PoeSATA standardizes the marketplace, the eSata connection on this enclosure is useless as a mobile connection port. Not only do you require the eSata information cable, but you ought to discover 5v power someplace else. Useless. That it has eSata as an alternative of Firewire 800 bums me out. The finish shows fingerprints and scratches very easily--merely aesthetic. The supplied USB cable has the incredibly unnecessary and annoying additional power plug, generating the ensemble quite clunky. Most modern day laptops and desktops provide 5v to the USB bus. Obtain a brief, USB-A to mini-b cable to replace the stock a single. I'm glad the enclosure supports the 500GB challenging drive. I was ready to obtain the Western Digital MyPassport 500GB enclosure/drive combo (WDMES5000TN), but this saved me some cash. Now I'll stick one more Scorpio Blue in my Mac Book Pro and have practically a TB of mobile storage. Excellent!

Works effectively.Wonderful Seeking.Case holds together nicely.Value. None that I have found. I purchased this and installed a Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST980825AS 80GB 7200 RPM.It has worked flawlessly with both the eSata and USB interfaces given that I purchased it about a year ago.I have under no circumstances required to purchase a power adapter. I generally plug in both USB adapters to make positive it has enough power. But I have utilised it with just the primary and had no issues. And of course you require to attach the the power USB when using the eSata.

durable, I am rough on my electronics and this enclosure has held up effectively and still looks new right after practically 6 months of use.solid, the enclosure has a quite solid really feel. produced of higher grade aluminum that protects the difficult drive and dissipates heat there are alot of screws involved with the enclosure, 4 to hold the HD to the circuit board, and 2 to hold the circuit board/HD into the enclosure. this is very nit picky The data transfer speed over USB feels up to snuff and the aluminum enclosure dissipates heat well.

Effectively-built enclosure, securely-mounted HDD, and all characteristics operating with no fuss. Appears to dissipate heat properly sufficient. Kudos to Vantec for including an SATA-to-eSATA PCI bracket. The carrying case is a bit massive for my tastes, and but it's a tight fit if you stuff the included USB cable in there. All four of my NexStar 3's are dependable small enclosures. They expense a bit a lot more, but the fab top quality is worth it. You may have to obtain a Coolmax enclosure to get a decent carrying case, although.BTW, no problems operating the Samsung Spinpoint 640GB HDD in here on a single USB energy connection.

Functions as expected. I had a 500GB spare drive (Seagate Momentus 7200.four ST9500420AS) operating at 7200RPM. Installation takes less than two mins. Connected by way of the e-Sata port and voila! If only there were an AC adapter it would be genuinely amazing. Still not worth to decrease the eggs in the review. :) I am preparing to get a different a single for my spare Hitachi drive. That a single is 500GB-7200RPM too. I am certain it will run flawlessly as well!

Lovely tough drive. Quick and portable. Only functions with the producers USB cable. Need external power for eSATA connection. General I would rate this a excellent obtain. I use it primarily to shop mp3 files as a result I connect it to my desktop at household and my laptop at the office. This presents me with the important issue. The unit's power needs demand a Y-cable offered by the manufacturer. The cable is not sold separately. Vantive pointed me to a website that carries them. I invest in a couple of them. Neither one seems to function with the unit. To keep away from the inconvenience of swapping cables I decided to install the eSATA card that comes with the unit. Sadly this calls for an external power provide that does not come with the unit. Here's hoping I by no means lose that Y-cable.

I like these enclosures, and also the Vantec 3.5" larger sibling product. I own many and every single 1 has worked perfectly. The carrying case is a a lot appretiated addition. These enclosures look seriously nice and consist of all the bells and whistles: usb cable with added usb port for laptops that dont put out enough power to operate the drive, eSATA cable and bracket, and the carrying case i mentioned. The drive even has a 5v plug, which i have by no means needed and ive utilised these on lots of systems... its good to know its there if i ever require it. The build is of extremely high excellent and its light and quite compact. Installation of a difficult drive is incredibly simple. These cons are incredibly minor: The included eSATA cable is brief, about two.five feet. Like almost all external enclosures it does not support the S.M.A.R.T. feature (doesnt perform in USB or eSATA mode). I dont know if they in fact perform in SATA 3Gbps mode (but they undoubtedly perform in SATA 1.5 Gbps mode), but this is a non issue simply because at this time (and in the near future) the benefit of 3Gps vs 1.5Gbps is extremely extremely minimal to none. Tough Drives cant even execute quick adequate to break the 1.5Gbps barrier. I do know from knowledge that I have purchased some newer SATA 3Gbps 2.five" Difficult Drives and they have worked out of the box on these enclosures and on my computers SATA controllers (using eSATA bracket included). Some evaluations complain that eSATA doesnt function, It works perfectly, Persons require to educate themselves about their gear, MOST onboard and quite a few add-on SATA controllers dont support SATA "hotplug", so there are additional actions to make those systems function but it will perform. Any issue getting it to work is not the enclosures fault, these perform flawlessly.

Nice look... I had a related problem with this enclosure as yet another critique. It does not function with my 160BG drive. As per the other reviewer "Be cautious when you purchase this one, the new ones doesn't work with 160GB drives. If your enclosure is having Initio chipset, then absolutely it wont function with 160GB drives." I wonder if it functions with the new 500GB drives?

Fantastic enclosure - high gloss black metal construction with challenging plastic finish pieces and blue LED. Inside - the PCB attaches to the two.5" SATA HDD with four screws along the full length of the drive - none of that rattling about you see with other (cheaper) enclosures. As a bonus it does both USB and eSATA and consists of a bracket for your desktop to add eSATA to it offered you have a SATA port to spare inside your desktop. Carrying case is made of ballistic nylon type material and roomy sufficient for drive with cables - I can in fact fit two drives and one particular cable set in it no challenge. Extremely suggest this enclosure if you don't thoughts spending a couple of added bucks for high quality - compliments my Dell Studio XPS 1645 Obsidian Black laptop extremely nicely. The drive I utilised was the two.five" SATA 500GB 7200.4 Seagate. Uhhh - It wasn't cost-free but I hear the dems may possibly be coming out with a cash for clunkers system for MFM and ESDI drives soon so remain tuned ;)>

Pull it out of the box and it appears assembled, on the other hand the screws are not in location, producing it terribly simple to pull the tray out, drop in the drive and reassemble. My Grandmother could do this. Murphy might make better idi0ts, but I would say for now this is idi0t proof. Instantly recognized in Win7, fired suitable up, and muffles the noise of the drive I put in nicely. two really minor issuesɅ) The LED behind the Vantec logo is Seriously bright.two) The integrated eSATA cable has a slightly misshapen connector creating it challenging to plug 'straight' into an eSATA port, that is I have to put an edge in and 'roll' it into the port. It's not going to break or come loose, just a minor nuisance. These points combined are not minus-egg worthy. Program on buying a shorter eSATA cable and a USB to Mini USB cable if you are toting this with a newer laptop. The included cables are nice but totaling over 6-feet they quickly take up a lot of space in your bag. Fortunately had a 1-foot USB cable, just need to have to grab the eSATA. Program is to swap the HDD in the laptop for SSD and use this for information on the HDD.

+ Making use of it in ESATA Mode (duh) - There's been a couple of times exactly where transfers have been slower than a turtle with no legs. As in ӴMB/s (over ESATA). That's even way slower than USB. Not sure what is going on. Not confident what's going on. Normally canceling transfer and trying again fixes that. I don't believe the drive itself has any troubles so I'm left to believe its something weird with enclosure. I'm going to maintain fiddling with it. Possibly my weird issue is caused by the way I have USB hooked up. Im tempted to just get AC adapter.
