I needed storage for my FreeNAS build and after a lot of dithering, decided to go with the WD RED drives. I had read all the reviews from other customers across multiple sites and was a little apprehensive. I had previously bought a few for work and they've so far been ok - but for this project I needed 6.Long story short: I ended up purchasing the drives in batches of 2 over several weeks. Each was tested using dldiag and the extended test before being used in the ZFS array. This took a while to do, but did add an element of relief - especially as I had 6 good drives out of 6 (touch wood no returns needed yet!).Initial testing with FreeNAS 9.1.0 with a RAIDz2 setup using an LSI 9211-8i in IT mode across the 6 drives and I am seeing write speeds of ~460MB/s and reads of 570MB/s (this is direct dd generated data on the NAS to the ZFS mount). This is largely in line with what I was expecting (~4 x 140MB/s).Day to day use, and the temperatures all seem good (I do not spin the disks down) averaging ~30C. General performance over network has been good to great.So far so good. My only concern is the long term reliability of these drives as it appears that most large capacity drives these days either work great for years... or die suddenly within the first 3-6 months. Time will tell I guess :) |

I purchased two of these drives on sale to use in my Shuttle KD20 NAS. I set them up in Raid 1 and then transferred nearly 1Tb of movies from my HTPC. Even after 6 hours of transferring data, the NAS temperature never exceeded 54C.Hopefully, the decision to spend a few extra dollars to buy a drive that is designed for a NAS will mean that I will not need to use the 5 yr. warranty! |

I bought 2 of these to replace my WD Green 2Tb Raid1 setup managed internally by my motherboard. The reasons of the upgrade was:- I needed bigger storage because I'm doing a lot of photo and video editing.- One of my 2 WD Green is starting to show signs of failure.Installation was easy after I updated the bios of my motherboard (Asus Sabertooth X58) and the Intel RST software.One of the 2 drives I've received had SMART errors and bad sectors right from the first boot. I'm quite disappointed and frustrated since I bought the RED version specifically because I wanted a safe and reliable storage system. I've returned the drive for an exchange and I really hope the new one won't cause me any trouble."Fast enough" access and R/W speeds for my storage needs, but I obviously woudn't recommend it as a main/working hard drive or cache drive for video editing.I found it cheaper on another site so I got a good price match. |

I picked this up to use in my media center because it runs all the time and acts as my NAS for my other systems.It has worked very well and is more quiet then the blue it replaced. It has enough capacity to be a central location for most of my files. No more remembering what system I created a file on because this is accessible to all my systems.The 24/7 operating spec seems like a good added bonus(not that I have ever filled a drive from hours alone).With this much capacity remember to setup regular backups. |

Used these to replace 2 WD Caviar Black 1TB drives I had in my server box. Wanted to increase capacity while lowering the internal temperature.Temperature of the drives is about 2 degrees C less, was hoping for a little more. Transfer speeds remain at about 125 MB/s over Gigabit ethernet with SMB/CIFS, which is as good as one can hope for.Can't comment on reliability yet. |

I picked up two of the 3TB WD Reds to replace my third dead 1.5TB WD Green drive. Even though my experience dealing with the Western Digital RMA was quite positive and painless I was sick of rebuilding my nas and waiting for the raid array to resync/rebuild. I know some people have had zero problems with the Green drives but I have had nothing but grief in both my nas enclosure and in my rig. I would have purchased WD Blacks if they were available in 3TB capacity. (The five year warranty was tempting....) Did some research and settled on the WD Reds. They seem to run cooler than my Greens, they are fast, and I have had no problems so far in a RAID 1 setup. Might wait for a sale/restock and pick up two more for a RAID 5 array. |

If you run your drives 24x7 in a non-rack mount, this is the drive for you. Of course it is quite. And of course it is the size specified. It will be several years before people are able to comment as to how reliable these drives are. But if you are like me and sick of dead desktop rated drives, this one has the specifications you are looking for.I only wish they made these in the 4TB size, as that is a more natural increment to replace dead 2TB drives with. |

Good quiet disk for home nas. Got about 115MB/sec read/write with qnap 469l (almost max of gigabit link). Probably not the best for boot disk, but fast enough for nas solutions. Got defect disk, but very good service from ncix rma dept to get new one fast. Replacement is perfect. Very happy so far. |
