Western Digital Red 3TB SATA3 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Internal Hard Disk Drive HDD
Cons:Out of a 5 disk array one failed within the 1st month.

Pros:Drive is intended for RAID setups.
Comment:
Drives genuinely seem like a decent drive. Using them in a Drobo 5D and I am loving the performance. Although, 5 disk array being used and within one month of service one drive has already failed.

Western Digital Red 3TB SATA3 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Internal Hard Disk Drive HDD
Cons:Slightly more expensive than the alternatives.

Pros:Good speedVery quiet3 year warranty
Comment:
Purchased eight of these drives to replace four WD20EARS drives in my server. They are operating in RAID6 on an LSI 9650SE-8LPML. Single drive performance is very good, and they are as close to inaudible as you'll get for a 3.5" drive. The price is slightly higher than some competitors (e.g. Seagate), but you get 3 years of warranty instead of 1. WD support is generally very good and in the one case where I had to replace a drive, it was in my mailbox within two days. I would much rather pay a little extra now than potentially have to pay more later.

Western Digital Red 3TB SATA3 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Internal Hard Disk Drive HDD
Cons:Not yet available in 4TB flavor, probably shouldn't be used as an individual drive since sector recovery is tuned for redundant setups

Pros:Good capacity, power efficient, works great with raid and nas devices, 1M+ MTBF, practically an industry class drive at consumer price level
Comment:
I own 4 of these drives and have ordered 4 more for use with a LSI 9260-8i. No more false drive failures, no more dropping nas no more lost hours of raid rebuilds.

Western Digital Red 3TB SATA3 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Internal Hard Disk Drive HDD
Cons:None so far, I only had them for 5 days

Pros:Plenty of space(for now), silent, NAS specific
Comment:
I bought 2 of these to replace my 2 WD Caviar Black that I have(had) in a NAS; main reason to upgrade was because I was running out of space. These seemed to be a good replacement for multiple reasons: space, they are NAS specific (and listed as compatible for my QNAP TS219P) and the price at that time (got them on sale after Cyber-Monday). So far very happy with the purchase. I checked them both with the WinDlg software from WD website just to make sure they are working fine before I trust my data to them. Rebuilding the RAID took most part of a day but once completed they are working as expected. They run cooler than the previous WD Blacks.

Cons:it looks impossible to get someone on the 24/7 support line

Pros:silentfastlong warranty
Comment:
I'm not sure i could call this a DOA, but my drive only shows 760GB and it's impossible to reach someone on their "24/7" support line.On the good side, the drive is silent with less vibration than my wd green and the transfer speed is good.

Cons:price

Pros:quiet, storage space, warranty
Comment:
I have this in a Synology 212J and it works perfectly. The drives are quiet and the warranty is better than Seagate's. Only issue is the price, it can get expensive depending on the # of bays your NAS has.

Western Digital Red 3TB SATA3 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Internal Hard Disk Drive HDD
Cons:None so far.

Pros:Take my review for what it's worth to you. I'm running many individual drives in a large (HAF) box with good power, cooling, etc. I keep local and remote backup, so I'm not overly excitable. We have super easy setup under Linux. Start. More Applications. Configuration. gparted. Up comes a nice graphical interface. I go to the top right and in a drop  down menu are my disks. I only have one 3T drive now so it is easy to choose.I click on the disk partition and choose "default" (ms-dos to see if it will allow something which will not work. I am given a warning and blocked. So I choose GPT (GUID Partition Table) and all works in seconds. Then I begin formatting which takes all night with bad block checks. And then of course I began huge copying tasks.
Comment:
Who knows with hard drives. The one (of two) Hitachi drives which survived a poor shipping issue last summer is still working perfectly. But then so are the two Seagates which showed such poor diagnostics much longer ago. WD green 1-2T drives treated with wdidle3 are working fine, too.The bit of information which might be important to you is that I'm running a transfer with the red drive in an external Vantec docking station. Not only is it working but through HDDTEMP:[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 36°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 36°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 36°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 32°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 32°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 33°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 33°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 33°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 33°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 33°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 33°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 33°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 32°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 33°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 34°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 33°C[meflocalhost ~]$ hddtemp /dev/sdg/dev/sdg: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0: 33°CTemps though intensive blockcheck to writing data. Not any chance that you could ever see that with any other drive in the Vantec dock - with any drive. Normally I use an AC fan if doing any transfers. Yes I got grounded and touched the drive which was cool, and yes I know that something is beyond belief. We shall see how data plays once transferred. If the second red drive can operate like this - with little rise in temp with use with data transfer - and green drives operate like before - then extra cost is well worthwhile.I guess I need to try a new 3T green/ But I am pleased with the two new reds which I bought.

Western Digital Red 3TB SATA3 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Internal Hard Disk Drive HDD
Cons:None so far

Pros:Finally - affordable HDD that works with NAS without problems
Comment:
Have a QNAP 4 bay NAS and upgraded (install from scratch) using Seagate 3TB. First HDD works, 2nd installed ok too (3rd and 4th are my existing HDDs which never had problems). But after 24 hours, the 2nd Seagate keeps on lagging behind (1 to 2 min) every few seconds of read or write. Finally gave up and tried WD 3TB red. Did a swap (2nd HDD) let the NAS rebuild it. After 20 hours (which I expect), things finally work like a charm!I intend to get more of these in the future.

Western Digital Red 3TB SATA3 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Internal Hard Disk Drive HDD
Cons:A bit more $ than average 3TB

Pros:Fast, really rast. Very, very quiet. Designed for RAID. Easy installation and painless RAID setup.
Comment:
I have 8 of these drives running in RAID 6 on an Adaptec 6805 controller. Setting up the array was quick and painless (as it should be); no hiccups, glitches or problems. These drives are fast and very quiet, much quieter than the Seagate 2TB Greens they replaced. I also sleep better knowing I have drives designed for 24x7 service in my server. Time will tell about the reliability, but so far I am very happy with the purchase about 5 weeks in.

Western Digital Red 3TB SATA3 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Internal Hard Disk Drive HDD
Cons:Only 3TB

Pros:Commercial grade for home user. Efficiency, quietness, performance
Comment:
Performing great so far. These drives are quiet, efficient and perform very well. Tested 88mb/s stand alone transfer rate, 139mb/s in raid 0 and 122mb/s in raid 5 in real world environment. Might very well be the most promising solution for home networking. Too bad WD only make 3TB drives at this point.

Western Digital Red 3TB SATA3 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Internal Hard Disk Drive HDD
Cons:Other than cost, none as of yet.

Pros:3TB drive with a three year warrantyAppears to be fast and stable (so far)Made for raid/nas setupsSeems to run cooler than my 1.5TB WD Greens did
Comment:
I picked up two of the 3TB WD Reds to replace my third dead 1.5TB WD Green drive. Even though my experience dealing with the Western Digital RMA was quite positive and painless I was sick of rebuilding my nas and waiting for the raid array to resync/rebuild. I know some people have had zero problems with the Green drives but I have had nothing but grief in both my nas enclosure and in my rig. I would have purchased WD Blacks if they were available in 3TB capacity. (The five year warranty was tempting....) Did some research and settled on the WD Reds. They seem to run cooler than my Greens, they are fast, and I have had no problems so far in a RAID 1 setup. Might wait for a sale/restock and pick up two more for a RAID 5 array.
