Really dependable drive, I have put this drive in a handful of systems that I have built and it performs really well. I have constantly employed WD for the last 15 years and will not use any other brand. Enjoy the 64mb cache. price per gig is high, but this is an enterprise edition drive so no surprise there.

Fine (and quick) in a Raid Properly packedAll four fired up and ran fineEnterprise with no "raid excuses" in the fine print a bit high priced compared to the customer equivalent. Newegg has modified the way they pack hard drives more than the final couple months. The "new way" wraps them in bubble wrap, puts that inside a box, then packs the box inside your shipping box (double boxed). The old way did not use the second box. Consider that (on any drive, not just this one particular) when you read about some of the difficulties.

Installed 2 of these drives in a Dell PowerEdge T110 server running Ubuntu 10.04 server edition. No troubles as all so far. Installed into the dell tough drive "docks" in seconds and had been recognized in bios and os. They formatted as i wanted with no any difficulties. Benchmark tests were great and the drives are quiet. none thus far would order far more of this line for other tasks...

Comment:
Rapidly, quiet, properly-packed for shipping. Developed to be used. Not actually a unfavorable, but on a per-MB basis, it is a bit pricier than other selections. Between the 64MB cache and its MTBF rating, it's effectively worth the further handful of bucks. Newegg need to have listened to all the complaints about how bare drives had been getting shipped because this one arrived wrapped in bubbles and then wedged into a corrugated sleeve similar to those used to ship bulk blank discs and then placed in a box adequately sized. Couldn't ask for better packaging. This drive went into a client's household Computer soon after her original WD SE drive died (won't even spin up). It was chosen for reliability and overall performance. Only time will tell about no matter whether it lives up to the claims on the WD internet internet site, but any drive developed for a corporate 24ǝ atmosphere ought to reside a extended, satisfied life at residence. As for performance, this drive is exceptionally snappy. Win7 provides it a 5.9 in the WEI. 64MB of cache actually aids. And it's really quiet in the box, despite the fact that it is mounted with 4 screws into the face rather than two on a single side some systems would get.Don't attempt to save a handful of bucks on a cheap tough drive, in particular if you're not running RAID. This one particular's a winner.

Let me clarify for the final time:Couple of of you are dealing with mission-critical data or have engineering degrees.I've to repeat this harddrive is meant for RAID - does not mean would "NOT perform" at all or shed speed performance when used alone (non-RAID). Let me clarify what TLER in firmware does:Getting TLER active prevents harddrive from spending additional than eight-30 seconds to recover a soft error (ECC correction) so it does not fall out of RAID array often (frequent fallout would be poor for Servers or 24ǝ/"always on" applications). Instead RAID drives rely on RAID controller for most of ECC.Now, if employed stand-alone (nonRAID) - getting TLER active means the same thing except now it hurts - harddrive as an alternative of usual two-minute or longer attempts to recover information, just provides up in 8 seconds & reports a "non recoverable error". And one last truth:Users are not permitted to allow/disable TLER setting in firmware as in the past years, b/c it messes up drives. OK? None As stated many occasions, these are meant for RAID apps i.e. employing two+ drives in RAID1 & up.It does NOT imply it would be a challenge making use of in nonRAID/stand-alone/regular appliication. It just signifies you're taking probabilities with ECC 9ErrorRecovery) which is deliberately tweaked by manufacturer to function best for RAID. Reality it functions fine for you as standa-alone for two months doesn't mean in 20 monthsor 3 years you won't face the consequences of your option.Bottom line, for standard/nonRAID use you must go with WesternDgitial Blue, Green, Black or for 24ǝ streaming/intense applications - AV or AV-GP series. And don't forget to check if your OS is older than Windows 7 & your new drive is AF (Advanced Format) - AF require to be aligned by WesternDigital "Aligner" utility from their web site (don't be concerned - just Once & below 20 minutes).Case closed.Engineers style issues for s precise application, using it for another application is fine but let's say "NOT OPTIMUM". It is optimum for RAID.

I currently wrote a review, but forgot one important reality:Must USE IN "RAID" ONLY (Raid1, five, 10, but stay away from Raid0) if your aim is reliability. Do NOT use in desktops as a stand-alone harddrive, b/c Enterprise/RAID edition storage like this one, have TLER setting enabled in firmware. Users cannot disable it, and it is meant strictly for RAID. Utilizing this drive standalone limits error-recovery, for that you woul duse WD Black, Blue, and so on not this RE4 model RE4 is for RAID only (TWO DRIVES AT LEAST).. No cons. Just be sure to use in RAID, not standalone I already wrote a assessment, but forgot one crucial fact:Should USE IN "RAID" ONLY (Raid1, five, 10, but keep away from Raid0) if your goal is reliability. Do NOT use in desktops as a stand-alone harddrive, b/c Enterprise/RAID edition storage like this one, have TLER setting enabled in firmware. Too long to explain. It's "RE4" class. Non-qualified people initially appear at size, properly it's so wrong. Most crucial spec of a storage (if your life, perform, etc. depend on information!) is reliability, NOT size.Extremely huge drives are mathmetically less reliable due to higher data density, reliability per-platter decreases exponentially. This HDD, at 500GB & RE4 class is the finest deal for reliability. I would essentially pay additional if cost was greater. It's a lot more than you would pay for a regular drive but it;s worth it. NONE! RE4 Enterpirse/Server class.Adequate mentioned.

I bought this drive for a method disk on my pc with two 1tb WD drives in Raid1. It's quickly. On CrystalDiskMark 3. it scored Seq read of 182.two and write of 137.2 MB/s. That's faster than the g Skill SSD I purchased for another computer system.... their 120 GB was a poor choice for me. this 1 also beats the Raptor it's replacing. Nope. There ought to have been one thing wrong with raptor it replaced since this pc is 5x quicker now. Perhaps it's the 64mb cache. Whatever, I'm lovin it.

Probably the finest (best, in terms of value, convenience, performance, and reliability) platter-type difficult disk drives I've ever owned. Swift reads, writes, copies, deletes, formats, and everything in-in between. Got one of these drives on sale at Newegg w/free shipping, as an impulse-buy. I liked it so a lot, I got a different for use in a RAID1 configuration, in my principal household personal computer, just for backups/storage. Have run all kinds of anxiety tests on it, and it has confirmed 100% reliable. Impressive good quality. So far, none. Perhaps a tad noisy, as far as main data storage devices go, it's a little unfair to compare platter-type drives to SSD's; 1 has moving parts, the other doesn't. But, for my purposes, each platter-kind and SSD's have their own, individual strengths and merits, and both continue to prove useful in my existing computer system configurations. To answer my own question, it appears to be their (Western Digital) quality, far more than my luck. I recognize that various people today have reported bricked/DOA drives, but I feel WD has outdone themselves with this item line. I've owned a number of other tough drives from Seagate, Maxtor, Samsung, and IBM, amongst others. But, all the best tough disks I've ever owned have been adorned with a Western Digital sticker. For the value, value, comfort, and efficiency (in my gaming, perform, school, photo/video project compositions, and as my common multimedia systems), the best configurations I've tested have included SSD's as boot/OS/application drives, and platter-sort challenging disks as (readily-accessible) information storage devices. This HD works exactly as-advertised by Newegg/WD, and until the costs of SSD's drop (due to the price/availability/performance/reliability of other information storage technologies as feasible alternatives), I'll continue to invest in WD for my challenging disk needs.

Worked out of the box, incredibly quiet, and the 64 MB cache appears to make it a bit "speedier". I can barely feel heat on the top of the case. I skipped the "format" step and went straight to cloning original boot drive -- ZERO complications. No "technical manual" with the drive. I generally get at least a couple sheets of paper with written specs, tech support, and warranty return information. "Western Digital" brand: More than the last 20 years, I've observed WD, Seagate, IBM, Hitachi, HP -- you name it be branded "unreliable" mainly because of batch defect problems. I picked this drive since it's been around for ɭ year and nonetheless had a 90%+ ř egg" rating.

I have applied this as a devoted clone drive to backup my 300g velociraptor OS drive and it is very rapid. Works perfectly, could not be happier. Extremely zippy. No errors. Pretty quit, and runs a small bit warm but not bad. I really like the 64Mb cache, I notice it. None other than it is not sata 6. so it won't benefit from a sandy bridge 6. sata controller when I lastly upgrade. I use the usual techniques for backing up my OS hdd, but I also like to have a clone drive in the event that I would suffer catastrophic failure or infection. Whilst this drive is utilized on my residence program, I nevertheless do a LOT of perform function on this personal computer, so I can\'t afford for it to be down at all. Hence, the clone. I clone about once each week or so a well-liked program that I cannot say enough superior things about, I typically clone directly making use of the backup CD. Anyway, this drive is as fast pretty considerably as the raptor.
