works great, already tested on ide hdd drives, dvd burners, and sata hdd. works wonderful, very good speeds.run a 1tb sata on it 16ǝ no heating difficulties.nice getting able to connect and disconnect external drives fast. appears better than enclosures due to the fact they tend to over heat. hard drive lifted about 2mm from flat surface on the connection end, not certain if it will have any negative impacts in future, havent had any however though.much more risks apply to having it exposed compared to external enclosures. felt cheaply produced but soon after pressing it, plastic seemed challenging.

Works when not frying drives Immediately after frying a SATA HDD and reading the other negative reviews I decided to crack open this device to uncover out why.The traces from the power input run straight to the SATA power connection. No resistors or line filters. Nothing! No wonder it fries SATA drives so effortlessly. Once again, this functions excellent...as lengthy as you don't use the included power brick.

Good Concept I will by no means acquire an additional BYTECC item. I read the directions on the web page so everyone who thinks the complications you read about are because of misuse is mistaken. The power supply basically appears to be the problem. I have quite a few USB devices is use to work with harddrives, I do this for a living, 22yrs. Invest in a unique product. I have good accomplishment with the Newegg home brand HD devices.

Worked for a although... I had two of these at our laptop or computer repair shop, right after a couple months one of them 1 of them killed it's self and the difficult drive it was backing up; we're talking melted plastic everywhere and smoke. Figured it was just a manufacturing defect due to the fact the other one kept working. Quickly forward to currently, kept smelling a electrical / plastic burn in our shop. Took a while to find the source, but when we did the energy brick to the was already melted to the table.

helpful if you want to render an old drive totally inoperative Destroyed the laptop drive that I was attempting to get the data off of. The only paperwork with it warns you to back up your information initially. What would you be using this for, other than to get information off of a drive. The "tips to install" on the bytecc website recommended powering on following connecting, which is opposite of what the other reviewer mentioned. Guess I ought to have gone with the reviewer.

Older models works fantastic Had been pleased with the first goup of these bought over a year ago. We then decided we'd a new set of these. The most up-to-date ones are junk. We now have various dead drives due to shorting even leading to fire in one of the now dead drives. Won't be purchasing these a third time due to this. Not certain what happened to their quality controls, but they went in a pit in the last year. Just don't acquire. These are now killing drives

When these work they are invaluable... but Appropriate now the lastest ones that are coming out are buring up drives. We've lost five drives and have gone by means of 4 of these. The lastest edition of these are SATA killers. They just trigger the drive to smoke and poof! There goes your data, drive, and adapter. I would go with yet another brand for now or check back for additional critiques. Very good factor we were starting with new drives and not users data. These had been many brands of HDs so its not vendor associated. It's not user error as we have one in the shop that gets heavy use and we've had it for properly over a year with no troubles. The ones are failing correct out of the box. I hope Bytecc will reimburse for our lost drives.

Arrived rapidly. Newegg consumer service is excellent. 3.five" connection interferes with power supply for five.25" drive. I attempted to use it on a 5.25" DVD drive even so the information connection is too wide, blocking access to plug in a power supply cord for the DVD drive. There's no way around it. I did get an RMA however the price of shipping it was only a few dollars much less than keeping it to use on a 35." SATA drive.

Employed it off and on for the 1st 3 months and had no complications with IDE and SATA drives. Just recently I decided to go by way of some old IDE drives to erase the data on them. I hadn't utilised this device in about 3 months. Had no complications via 8 IDE drives. Plugged in a 1.5TB SATA I had some media on and instantly began to smell something from the drive. I plugged in the USB and my machine would not recognize the drive. Unplugged the SATA and attempted an IDE drive and it worked. Opened up my machine to put the SATA drive inside and it refused to even recognize the drive. Attempted the SATA drive on the adapter again and noticed the power adapter's bright green light dimmed and started making a buzzing sound. Needless to say the drive was dead. Luckily it nonetheless had a warranty so I RMA'd it. When I got my new drive I attempted it on the adapter and poof it burned that one instantly. Threw away this device immediately. I recognize now that I got lucky not losing anything genuinely crucial. Remain away from this device it's not worth it. I had a very good run with it early on but it's only a matter of time just before it starts burning up your drives like others have mentioned here and I sadly located out.

Low-cost Cheaply produced, poor quality, burns up IDE challenging drives I tested this unit on a number of spare tough drive I had laying about, it fried both IDE challenging drive and wouldn't recognize any SATA drives. There are too many alternatives to this poorly made device to even think about it.

Incredibly efficient at ruining your drives I *wish* this was DOA, vs what it in fact did. It turned on as soon as, and fried my 1TB SATA tough drive, generating the drive entirely unusable. I then took an old useless IDE HD that otherwise worked fine (I didnt care if it fried) and it wouldn't even be detected on this factor, then was detected when I plugged it into a external drive. Ahead of putting this to use, try to only test it on older/useless drives you have laying around and don't mind losing. If only it worked... I'm hesitant to bother with these sort of adapters in the future

there was not any data on the drive it burned up I needed and it did not take up too much room in my trash can About 2mo ago I ordered this and the first 1 was DOA. Newegg sent me a replacement and that was not a challenge. I have applied this on my IDE drives and had no difficulty. The other day I applied it on a SATA drive and it smoked this was a very good drive and I had used this adapter on this drive a couple of days just before it got smoked with no challenge. I see I am not the initial this has happened with. So in short don't purchase this. Invest a couple of bucks more and get a very good 1. Your data could depend on it. Newegg nonetheless guidelines... I wish they would quit selling this item

Worked perfectly the 1 time when it was completely vital to recover a organization program (both IDE and SATA drives - Western Digital of course) where the OS (Win XP) had gone poor without having recent backup. No drivers were needed for my Win 7 - 64 system to recognize. On about 20% Ɠ out of about 15) of the older IDE drives that I've tried to read it just does not report the drive as offered. In fairness, while these had been all labeled as very good when they had been pulled from systems, they could have been dead or dying at that time. The operating instructions are a joke, but they're not really necessary anyway. For the price, it's a tool any individual with a population containing older drives Need to have.

Makes it extremely handy to test challenging drives. I had a couple IDE drives that needed checking but was dreading swapping them into my desktop, so kept putting it off. Testing them was a piece of cake with this thing (WD Diagnostics and chkdsk), and the price of it makes it worthwhile even if you aren't testing challenging drives all the time.It will also connect to two.five" IDE drives as properly as SATA drives. No directions, and what's with the 1.five GB limit? I couldn't tell if they meant the SATA speed or the capacity of the drive under test. If your tough drive has a molex connector for power, plug the output of included power supply into it, else plug the output into this unit and it will pass thru to the drive.A previous reviewer gave instructions as to power up sequence. You should read his assessment. I had no difficulties when I plugged in the energy supply to the A/C, installed this unit on the tough drive, plugged the energy supply output into the hard drive, then plugged the unit's USB connector into my personal computer (Lenovo R61 laptop running Win7ኜ). The OS handled this unit w/o hiccup.
