I live in an area where DSL or Cable is not available so I depend on Dial-Up Internet service. I bought this cable after much research to add a serial port to a new Dell Inspiron 531 computer so I could use my US Robotics 56k External modem. After some difficulty with Vista and finding the correct driver I finally was able to get the combination working. BUT!!! After a few minutes it became apparent that the USB to Serial conversion would not be stable as the Modem constantly loses connection with the ISP which is something that has never happened before. I am to say the least dissapointed. I will not try to return the cable because that would only incurr shipping charges that would be a further waste of funds. BUYER BEWARE!!

I use several of these around an engineering research lab. I have yet to find a USB to Serial converter that works 100% of the time. In my experience, these Sabrent converters do as well as any of the higher priced converters out there, so I rate them highly for value. The design is fairly rugged, and I like having a bit of cable length to work with. In response to previous comments, these cables, like most USB to Serial converters, are meant to look like a hardware serial port would. You would not plug your computer directly into a device, you would put a cable in between!

CAUTION: This cable had standoffs on the DB-9 connector. I believe that it would be used to connect to another DB-9 cable (female). There is an identical part that does not have standoffs (P/N: M501-1210) which would be used to connect to equipment. The descriptions of this part needs to be revised to point this out.
