Sabrent USB 2.0 to Serial DB-9 RS-232 Adapter Cable

I bought this item for a customer who had an old serial device and bought a new computer with no serial port. It was not as easy to install as plugging it in, but once I installed the driver, it worked fine.

My purchase was made based on the on line review comments of previous customers who assured me that this product was what I needed for connecting a 1990 Palm III to a 2009 Vista OS based computer that does not come with a serial port. Price at this on line site was half of the competitor's best offering on their on line site. Too bad this site doesn't have any actual stores in this area. The shipping and handling charges are unrealistically high for inexpensive parts that could be mailed instead of the pricy UPS shipping.

I have Vista 64-bit and after updating the drive it works great. I don't know went wrong with the other 64-bit person's driver install but my works great. I bought it to work with my Garmin GPS.

Very pleased with this item aside from it didn't down load to my lap top because it being a Vista OS. Instrustions are out dated. Lucky my son changed a few settings and the down load worked everything works great.

Nothing fancy, but it does what I bought it for--converts a serial device to work through a USB port. Now the only problem is that some of the software I have is so incredibly stupid that it ASSUMES that it will always find the device on COM 1 or 2! How dumb do you have to be to write software like that?

This USB adapter works fine if you plug it in every time after you have booted up the OS. In my case I leave it plugged in. What happens is that everytime you boot the system it assigns a different COM port number. The software I use expects the same COM port every time. When you boot up the PC Vista automatically assigns the COM port anywhere from 1-99 (usually the next unused one). Keep this in mind if you need to work with a static COM port.

I have an old palm pilot with a serial port sync pad. Of course the newer main boards don't have serial port outlets anymore so I was wondering what to do. I bought this unit fed in the driver and the palm synced right up. Thant makes me very happy, as all my personal info is in there. Works great. Thank you guys.

This replaced an all-in-one adaptor that no longer made connection with the usb port. This adaptor with a 1-foot cable removes the stress from the usb port both on the adaptor and computer.

This does NOT work on vista 64-bit. Even though the manufacturer has 2 ''so called'' 64 bit vista drivers on their website.. It's going in the garbage.

I have a Summasketch III 12x12 digitizer. I have tried several usb adapters and finally found one that works....this one. Plugged it in, the pc recognized it, plugged the digitizer in, and it was ready for action. I bought an adapter a couple years ago that worked for the digitizer at work (Sewell) but I have not been able to find them since. I was also very pleased with the shipping. It took one day for me to receive it. Thanks.

i have a wacom serial tablet that i haven't been able to use since switching to a laptop with usb connectors. wacom told me that the tablet would probably not work properly with a serial to usb adapter. i use windows xp pro and had no problem with installation. i plugged in the adapter which windows found, then i placed the cd with the drivers in the dvd writer and windows found and installed the proper driver. i crossed my fingers and plugged in the serial tablet. windows found it to my delight. i installed the wacom driver 4.78.6 to be installed as serial. the driver was found and now i can use my 9x12 tablet. i found that newer drivers did not work for the tablet, even when connected to a serial port. my only regret was that i didn't buy the adapter when it was $9.99.

Works great. I have used several of these. Used with several applications & equipment. Also used mostly with XP Pro. No problems at all. The other USB to serial however has given problems. It is the brown one. Model # CBL-USB-GM.

It looks like you just have to gamble on this device. I finally determined mine to be DOA since it would not work on any PC. Sabrent support is virtually non existant. eMail only and takes days to respond. I purchased another one by Cables to Go. It looked identical but it worked perfect. I was even impressed with Cables To Go support as well. Since the cables looked identical I called them to see if they could help identify the problem with the Sabrent one. Very helpful and did determine that the cable was bad.

Bought this USB to Serial Cable to interface to the ELMSCAN 5 ODBII Scan Tool (ELM327) using Proscan ver 5.1 Software. Installed Drivers, Plugged in USB, Looked to see what COM port it was, and it all worked fine. Works fine with Digimoto, and Scantool.net software too! Cons: The RS-232 Screw studs had to be removed from the DB-9 end so I could plug into the ELMSCAN 5. I used a pair of Pliers to tug on the stud so it was slightly away from the Plastic shell, then ground off the flared portion of the stud with a Dremel Cutoff Disc so it could be removed. I then pushed the DB-9 back into the Plastic housing and it now plugs into the ELMSCAN5. Easy.....

This is the only USB-to-Serial adapter that has worked for me (of 3 that I tried). It seems most of these adapters suffer from buggy performance. It's a real crap shoot! -J_Tom_Moon_79

Do not buy if you have XP Professional. Would not work with my XP Small Business. Went to mfg's website to download a driver and with the driver download, there was a ''known product issue'' readme file about problems getting it to work with XP Professional.

Do not buy. The previous model was fine, but this ''newer'' model does not work. Avoid. Even though I went to the Sabrent website and downloaded the lastest driver software, it still did not work on several computers with XP and Vista. Bad news.

Stay away! Purchased 3 of these units. One was DOA. Another worked sporadically for a few days and then died. The third is still working. Have to wonder how long... Also, the driver CD was very low quality. It took a while to find a machine which could read the driver disk. Had to burn a copy. I don't know why the other reviewers seemed to have better luck. I have used this kind of device before and expected better than 1 out of 3.

These units rock. Driver installed easily. Bought three of these usb-serial units for Ham Radio applications, to use all at the same time. They are being used on a TNC (radio modem), Rig Control (Control Tranceiver), and the third to control VHF APRS (GPS tracking). I am giving a 5 because I used many others before with one problem or another. I ended up using one usb unit for all three applications and manual switching between the three. These three units work well together.
