Been operating 24ǝ for two months now with no complications. I don't ever hear it operating either. Doesn't appear to get too hot. It has a WD 320gb drive in it. I saved the box and foam for straightforward transportation. A HDD activity light on the front panel would have been nice. Also the USB cord is on the brief side of useful. I read tons of critiques and was a little nervous about getting a enclosure at all. Decided to go fanless mainly because it appears like the fans fail rather a bit based on other evaluations. I was worried that fanless would fry the drive though. If you are in the same boat, go ahead and purchase this enclosure. It has been running 24ǝ for 2 months now and has had no complications. Works fine with windows vista also. No software package necessary. It's like having a 320gb flash drive.

Cost, high quality. A single of the two screw holes on the back wouldn't line up straight so I only utilised one. That's all you require. This is my 1st external enclosure so I was a bit cautious when installing a difficult drive into it the first time specially with everybody saying how straightforward it is, nicely, it really is really straightforward to do. I installed a 250GB Seagate drive with out any issues. The procedure consisted of changing the jumper from default to master/single use, plugging in both cables, sliding the drive into location so the holes would line up, screwing it into spot, plugging in the LED cable, then powering up with the USB cable/power connector. Right after the drive was recognized by Windows I formatted/partioned the drive with Windows disk management rather of Seagate tools so it took roughly an hour. The enclosure runs a bit warm but not hot and the LED light on front is extremely vibrant but those aren't negatives. I also tried an old WD drive but it crashed a couple years ago and made an awful loud noise when inside the case so I couldn't salvage anything from it, not that I expected to anyway. Enclosure functions fantastic!

Uncomplicated and effortless to install HDs. Just make confident the HD's switch is set to 'master'. HD's activity light could use far more brightness. I have owned 3 of these enclosures for close to three years. They're always on and none has failed to this day. Low priced item with a fantastic ROI.

Operates wonderful I did a 20Gb transfer it got hot but not hot enough that I would worry about the safety of the hard drive. None yet. I had some troubles with ejecting it from my computer system it kept saying it was still in use and I had almost everything closed well it appears that on my laptop or computer even when you close "My Computer" it nonetheless is running so I just clicked on a various drive and then it ejected just fine.

It functions great! It's quickly, looks great, and gets the job carried out. If I genuinely had to put stuff right here, it makes the table I set it on vibrate. Also see note beneath. I received a dead unit from Newegg and went through Vantec to get it replaced via RMA. This would explain the 4Ǜ stars, otherwise I'd give it 5Ǜ.

The rack exactly where the hardrive goes is genuine tight. I actually didn't have to install the screws, but did anyway. Other than that the installation was real straightforward. I'm working with this on a Mac with OS 10.5. The LED light is the Vantec logo. none

Pain in the ass to change hard drives; not ideal if you want to change hard drives a lot. There is also this "bump" in the enclosure you have push really really hard to get it close. Very Tight fit. the AC adapter is is square.....But does not take away from the functionality and appeal. It looks nice and has a cool light. You won't find any better looking hard drive enclosure than this.

Very quick with an ATA100 disk. It's an old 1 I pulled from an old Dell computer. 60gigs gives all I will need for the built in backup in Windows OneCare which I use. Gets a little warm, but holds at an acceptable temporature.

this item is trash entirely can hardly fit my tough drive in it gets extreemly hot i have to turn it off and back on some times for it to dring any harddrive up newegg will be receiving this item back

To assemble it took perhaps ten minutes max. It stays pretty cool as far as I can tell. The drive I utilised had been laying around for most likely a year or so and this breathed new life into it. It is a great very first external as far as I can tell. Definately cool seeking with the aluminum case and I don't touch it a lot considering that it is stationary on my desk. I installed it on a Seagate񣚠.7 I think series) 200GB drive and as soon as it was setup, it worked effectively. The LED is a bit bright, but oh well as it allows just like a HDD LED on a case for you to be in a position to tell when it is becoming utilized. So it's not seriously a con, just have to get utilized to it. I did have complications reformatting the drive the very first time, but following this, it went fine and quick. I could not benchmark it but I figure it is since it is an external or one thing. Mine also made this weird noise when I initially went to reformat the drive, but I think possibly there was some dust or something that needed to be kicked off.. LOL I am going to see how it works overtime not becoming shut off as I pretty considerably keep my pc operating consistently. I am using this mainly for drivers and misc files that I want to store and not risk loosing. I definately if required will purchase an additional and advocate one to my buddies that create and backup also. Highly, highly recommended! Good Vantec item!

When I 1st got it I tested it at function on windows 7 32 dell notebook, put in a drive and everything worked. When I took the drive to my other computers at property it would not recognize the media, giving me an I/O error. I checked it with the mange tool and it states there is no media in the drive. It loaded fine, assigned a drive number but does not recognize the media in a Vista 32 and a windows 7 64 desktop. Oh properly I'll try one thing else to read my 3 drives from my old pc.

It's cheap. Poor thermal design. I expected a better style from Vantec. I'm an OEM Builder/Repairer and purchased this enclosure with a Seagate 160 gig drive for data recovery from clients machines.It was exceptionally "warm" just formatting the drive. There is no true ventilation, and I suspect if I continued to use the enclosure the drive would suffer and early death.I'm now looking for an enclosure with an enclosed fan and will almost certainly take this one, pull the drive, put it on the drill press and drill some holes for ventilation.If you intend to use this enclosure for anything other than "light" duty, appear for something else.

I am pretty impressed with this item. The housing is rather nice, which I was hoping for, but not completely expecting. It is beautiful and really solid aluminum and fairly thick. It is not thin or flimsy at all. I have a 160Gb drive in it and it all went together fine and booted up into my Intel iMac(and Parallels 3 too!; it is a previous XPP tower HDD that I am bringing over) no difficulty. I am satisfied overall. The lights on the front are good searching, but it has the whole front of it to use and it doesn't appear to show significantly of something. Whenever the HDD is pulling up a folder of pics or whatever, the light(which says Vantec and then has their small logo) flickers a little bit. The point is, with all of the space on the face there, I thought it was going to do more lighting or flashing or whatever, but no such luck so far I would surely advise this item. It is sleek, solid and quite properly priced. I plan to obtain other merchandise from newegg and Vantec, if essential.

excellent develop top quality and appearance; simple to assemble; no moving parts so must last a lengthy time gets quite warm to touch Overall, this is an exceptional item. It looks wonderful and is uncomplicated to put a challenging drive into. I put a 160GB Maxtor drive into it and the case gets quite warm to touch during extensive difficult drive activity, though cooler than the previous HD enclosure I was working with. Otherwise, I'd give it a five.

Hey it looks very good & it works nicely and temperatures remain low. Not quite a few IDE drives left anymore but if you have a great 1 make it into a backup drive. Also do yourself a favor check out the program Challenging Drive Sentinel which will tell you all you will need to know about the good quality of your challenging drives The case is tight and the connector ribbon and also the LED light are incredibly tight to make fit. Don't loose patience it all fits.Make confident you have robust hands to get it into the bracket.

Good speeds information transfer speeds, sturdy build and attractive design. Install was fairly easy too. A small loud. I believe this is really my HDD's fault, but just bear in mind if you have a loud difficult drive this won't muffle it considerably. If you have an IDE HDD lying around and don't have any a lot more room in your computer system (or just don't like opening up your pc) this is a fantastic solution.

I now have two of these enclosures (blue and red) for some storage working with a WD 160GB and a Seagate 400GB drives. Both of these began appropriate up and Windows picked up the drive swiftly without any further installations. The aluminum case appears to keep the drives cool sufficient. The 400GB runs for about 8hrs during the day as it is utilised to back up function, etc and at the end of the day, I can nonetheless touch the sides of the case. It may well be a small warm but no where near to hot to touch. I think the colors on these are 1 of the very best features not only for my simple thinking but they also appear good on your desk. The only con that I will state is the shorter than typical power cable. Whilst it is long enough for most applications, it could give a small additional if you wanted to stretch it across a larger desk to the floor. I read a comment about posters stating their technical understanding as high but yet the complain about the simplest technical errors that any monkey could fix. I have been a security engineer for 8 years and think my typical understanding rating is accurate. Just simply because you have built a couple of computers or connected a few cables does not make you a technologies professional. In todays globe there may be subject matter authorities but there cannot genuinely be 1 professional at anything technical.

Outstanding case. Easy to assemble. Does get warm, but not sufficient to damage the HD. I use this for backup of two desktops using a Seagate 320gig HD. Will purchase two much more.

Fantastic product, works precisely as advertised. Installation of the drive was a breeze, had it up and running in less than 5 minutes. None really. Originally got this product to salvage files from a couple of old hard drives. Even although there is no fan, the enclosure acts as 1 giant heatsink to keep the drives from overheating. That getting mentioned, it does get a small warm if there is a lot of activity, but nothing to be concerned about.

Works excellent, straightforward to install, Looks incredibly sleek, most likely going to acquire one more 1 for myself. ive been running a virus scan on it due to the fact im performing back up information for a guy and i noticed that it does get a small warm ... not hot but you can certainly tell there is some heat coming from the drive

Effecient size, drive fits nicely into enclosure, and works too, so that's a plus :D The way it all fits together is a bit frustrating...the screws on the back of my case don't line up appropriate so it took a bit of coaxing to get it to work and it's not best, but hey, it's together. IDE interface, so only IDE drives will work with this device, don\'t forget that!

Extremely amazing! Not only does it look great, but it was pretty straightforward to install. I've only used it on Windows with a USB 1.x connection on the computer, but it nonetheless worked just fine (my Linux program will have USB 2., but I haven't tried it on that however). The IDE cable can get stuck under the drive, crimping it somewhat, so be cautious. The USB attachment to the external tough drive seems to be a little loose, so don't bump it although transferring information.
