Great value for the space and capabilities. I have three of these drives in a Dell Energy Edge T310 PERC6I controller with hotswap drives. The server runs VMware ESXi four.1. The efficiency of the disk array is quite fantastic. Not cost-free??? Would recomend this series of tough drive model for Enterprise RAID use, or any other application.

Packaging: Acceptable. Two layers of bubble wrap + peanuts = no complaints. Drive: Quiet. Greater performing than the 500Gb RE3 drives these are replacing (esp on bigger file sizes) per HD-Tach final results. I use thes in conjunction with an ICY-Dock chassis and it created for an effortless install, was able to quickly set up in mirroring mode. Applied TeraCopy to migrate from my old drive to these, and have been operating nicely considering that. Program to purchase more units for a house server. None. The drives have performed flawlessly to date Ɣ weeks), which leads me to believe I'm out of the 'infant mortality' time period. Even though the cost is greater than other 1TB drives, for me the overall performance and reliability outweigh ฮ of savings. I plan to acquire further drives in the near future as I construct up my household server/NAS.

Reasonably quiet & quickly. In the final year three of these drives have failed even though getting utilised in a RAID 1 array. WD has replaced each within a couple of weeks. It is a pain to have to pull the drives, mail them back and then rebuild the array when the replacement arrives. Searching at some other reviews I must agree these certain drives have poor reliability.

Operates wonderful attached to RAID - utilized with various 3Ware 9550, 9650, 9690, and Adaptec 5805 controllers with BBU in RAID5, RAID6 and RAID10. This or the smaller sized WD5002ABYS is the way to go if you will need lots of storage space.Strong performer, good reliability (ㅪ drives deployed so far in various arrays with only 1 failure). Just connect the drives and forget about them. None. Want the RE4 2TB disks were more affordable - but I don't have want for that substantially storage. There's a tradeoff with rebuild time and performance, so if you require 3TB of space, get as numerous 500GB disks as achievable to spread your data more than much more spindles. Use RAID50 or RAID10 or RAID6 to defend against disk failure though maximizing overall performance.

This is the greatest drive I have ever owned. (Hope I'm not jinxing myself.) I am and have been an IT Consultant for 16 years and in that time I've seen 100's of defective drives. Rest assured the RE3 1TB is not 1 of those. Outperforms just about every category of each and every drive I have owned by far and long.Amazingly quickly (beats my V.Raptors!), really quiet, RE (Raid Edition), lasts, cool, performs beneath demand. None for a drive of this class. This drive is worth each penny no matter how you attempt to weigh your options going with cheaper equivalent drives. (I've been in business for 16 years since of the cheap alternates.) This is still a good drive at a excellent price, would get additional, even now.

Outstanding drives... I bought 7 of these to run in RAID five configurations on the HighPoint RocketRAID 4310 controller. They are all operating and performing well with reads more than 320 MB/s and bursts above 753 MB/s utilizing HDTune. They are all mounted in a mountain Mods case and present no heat dilemma at all. None that I have identified Reliable drives for use in RAID configurations... I have no regrets and would suggest these drives...

Cheap until the drive fails and you loose data. Raid will not aid safeguard the information. These drives have concerns with areas on the disks exactly where the information retention on the disk fails over a lot shorter time period then hard drive specifications. Writing to the affected area does not detect the difficulty as the data is fresh and a read immediately after the write passes. Only way to detect the faulty areas are to preform whole disk reads periodically. Raid setups offer small protection for these failures. Faulty locations can go undetected for extended periods of time. In the case of raid 5 as soon as a single drive is detected as bad many a lot more will much more then most likely have poor areas also which will fail the raid. I've lost three of these drives in the past 6 months. I have also had 5 other WD 1TB and 2TB drives fail the same way in distinct systems.

Its a Western Digital drive, with that comes a reputation. The buy was made through NewEgg. I ordered two of these drives to replace failing hardware (see Other thoughts below), when I started out the rebuild of my raid array on the second drive the controller failed stating the device had a hardware failure. Immediately after a lengthy Ɣ+ hour) extended smartd test the device indicated a read failure.I would expect much more good quality manage from Western Digital on an Enterprise level solution. Western Digital has put a permanent scar on their reputation with "Enterprise Storage" by limiting consumer products and building a purposeful failure point, the TLER function that use to be in a position to be controlled by way of the drive's firmware is 'on' on non-raid authorized drives and made irreversible in my opinion to force businesses to spend further income added dollars for equivalent hardware.A single TB is a lot of data not to be operating some sort of redundant technique and when one drive goes negative you can potentially loose a LOT.

Enterprise class drives, 2 drives in a raid = 220MB/s reads, made me rethink solid states till the price drop Pricey due to the fact the only true distinction among the enterprise drive and consumer drive is a firmware adjust. Very good drives for enterprise piece of thoughts.

Fantastic Capacity, when I purchased it- it was Reasonably Priced, but I think it has gone up given that then. Western Digital ReliabilityI haven't heard the drive at all like some are saying- but my pc is already decently loud as it is. I am a gamer and have several fans in it to maintain it cool, so the sound of the drive does not bother me in the slightest. Because I bought the drive the value has gone up about โ- no thought why? Possibly I just got lucky on a sale- but I feel like at the 赀 cost- you could come across a incredibly comparable, if not equal drive for less costly. Scores a five.9 out of 7.9 on windows 7... which could be a pro or con depending on your standards... but I feel to score anything greater than that, you would have to get into RAID , ten,000 RPM Drives, or SSD's, so it seems like a pro to me.I Used to purchase Seagate- but following possessing one of my Seagate drives fail on me in RAID (sucks) I decided to switch back to Western Digital, I have had numerous western digital drives now, and haven't had 1 fail on me. They appear to be very dependable!

what others appear to misunderstand is this is a enterprise class drive with some of the best longevity in the business someting the blue and black series are not. This is the RE3 industrial server drive. Know what your looking at ahead of you speak. Thankyou. Low cache. Its a good drive with wonderful longevity for the value. Ive noticed 4000 of these drives in 1 space. That's whats its built for. If you truly really like your information you just discovered your drive.

Operates fine. No problems at all. Newegg made some alterations to their shipping of HD's. This one came to me inside a box with other issues, but this time it was wrapped in bubble wrap and placed inside what appeared to be a perfectly designed corrugated HD shipping box. It traveled cross nation from California to my door in Pennsylvania and arrived in great situation... None I like how the HD's are shipped now that they added some protection.....

Quiet Drives. Works good in my house office server in a RAID 1 mirror. Purchased two drives. 1 started falling out of RAID soon after 30 days. Previous the Newegg RMA date, so I went by means of the replacement course of action with WD. Was painless and got the drive replaced over a month ago. Been working like a champ considering that then. With the sale, I'll be purchasing two more to expand the server to a RAID five.

I genuinely can't think of any. I have two of these in a RAID 1 array. The very first one particular failed within 3 months. I rebuilt from the replacement drive sent, and now it has failed soon after 6 months. Oh, did I mention that the RMA process is seriously slow. Provided the lousy reliability of these drives, I refuse to continue running with only 1 drive in the array till a replacement arrive. I can't see any explanation to devote the added cash for "enterprise class" drives when they don't deliver "enterprise class" reliability. Disk drive reliability, in common, seems to be acquiring a lot worse lately, and if you are running RAID on a desktop making use of an Intel chipset, you get precious tiny information. on a drive starting to go bad. My only clue was when a verify and repair operation took 24 hours and was only 23% complete with a status message saying hundreds of media block errors had occurred. It nevertheless did not, nonetheless, say which physical drive was the negative a single until following a number of reboots, the RAID BIOS message mentioned which drive had failed.

Really quiet, speedy access, and generates much less heat than many of my other drives. Bought this to sooner or later use in a RAID setup, but have but to test that capability yet. Can't consider of any... Western Digital is by far my brand of choice when it comes to difficult drives. Very low failure rate, and they always take care of you within the warranty period. None I have usually had quite a few great experiences with WD drives until now. I ordered 2 of these drives and 1 non-raid edition. In less than 4 months I have had to RMA all three drives back to WD. I hope WD gets their issuses resolved soon. I would like my faith restored in their item. Appropriate now I'm a bit skeptical of their quality.

It is pretty snappy, even though not noticeably more rapidly than my Seagate 1.5TB 7500, but thats okay simply because i had other intentions for that drive anyways. Packaging on mine was just fine, kept it protected. Wish i could have bought a caviar black, but with the TLER permanently off, I was left with little choice. Looks quite solid, and haven't had a single concern with the drive to date. I program to order another for a raid array. My only complaint is not with the drive but with WD. I really feel it is questionable small business practice to get rid of features from a "lower finish" drive in order to promote sales of the much more expensive, but less required, upper finish drive. I don't need to have the reliability and server storage related attributes that comes with the RE3. I merely require a solid raid capable 1+TB drive. I really like WD and this move deserves the uproar it brought on. If i could make a request, be sincere when you determine your tech understanding. Individuals like me take tremendous stake in these critiques being sincere and beneficial. 1 example is reviewer zordof with his great review including the quote " also dont get oem it dont come with box cables or floppy drive". Aside from the grammar disaster, I don't really feel I require to clarify the matters with that statement.

Decent Cost for an enterprise level drive. 4 of the five drives I purchased died with in 1 week of usage. Raid five configuration. Previously I bought WD Caviar Black Drives for the exact same config not realizing that they will not perform in RAID configurations as there is no documentation that they are not to be utilised in RAIDs on the tech specs on the drives. This is for a backup server luckily the old a single is still functioning so I can rely on that till the new one particular is up and operating as it really should. I create a lot of servers and have never ever had these concerns with other drives like I have with the Western Digital, I realize you get bad drives here and there it happens but 4 out of five is fairly undesirable. Going back to Hitatchi Ultrastar Drives.

They had been not seagates So immediately after two seagate failures in our iscsi arrays in below a year and all the concerns with seagate firmware lately I decided to switched more than to the WD RE3s in 500gb and 1tb in our last iscsi build. So far out of 24 drives we have had to RMA 9 in beneath 6 months. I am now back to buying seagate and replacing the WD when they fail with segates. Significantly much better drives all about.

I started with 1 of these as a drive to hold my appz and data in conjunction with my SSD. Performance is quick and trustworthy, ran it due to the fact Nov. 08 ྰ mos) and definitely no issues at all. This month I bought three more and ran all four in a RAID array. No troubles with the drives they are all matching in terms of file transfer performance and access times. Nonetheless, operating 4 of these in RAID will net you access times in the 15-25 ms range (and sequential reads of 430+MB/sec!). Recommend you stick with 2 of them as a maximum for speedy efficiency in RAID , else you could want to look into the Velociraptor Series if you program on placing far more than 2 of them in a RAID in order to preserve accesstimes down. High accesstimes with 3+ of them in RAID arrays, however that is correct of any 1 TB drive on the marketplace nowadays. Stays cool, roughly 27 C in a mediocre case, 25 C ambient. But I have gotten it up to 34 C while initializing a RAID 10 array. Fantastic for RAID 5 storage and NAS'es. Nonetheless if you are seeking for file launching performance you require to appear into smaller speedier drives. I suggest you get a SAS controller and pick up some of the 15K rpm SAS drives on right here, they are roughly the identical price tag but they are a lot greater on the overall performance side of items (and don't suffer from write failures like SSDs).

Bought it on specific for a good price compared to the competitor's offerings. I had 3 Seagate drives fail on me in the previous 6 months. Seagate assistance was terrible and did not provide to replace my drives with new ones, only refurbished.I am operating this drive in a computer software RAID1 below Fedora 12 x86_64. No troubles. Three platter drive. Go for an RE4 version if you want a faster a single.

Have tens of these drives operating in our servers 24ǝ. Not a single dilemma nevertheless! Super quickly in RAID ten. None for the item itself. Horrible Newegg Packaging. I ordered five a lot more of these drives final week. The drives were wrapped around themselves in bubble wrap. You would consider they would have greater packaging fo rEnterprise level drives. I ordered with UPS 3 Day Guaranteed.
