biggest tough drive you can stuff into a laptop for ata 6 style, either bare drive or retail boxed, under no circumstances found a problem with either as of yet beyond the luck of being sent a doa. even though if you are lucky enough to get a good one, they appear to perform without having concern for as long as I've had them. Luck of the draw, seeing as I'm not the only 1 with this occurance may well as well state it: likelihood you'll uncover your new drive is a dud, but preserve attempting. get a fantastic 1 and it will final.

I replaced a 40GB IBM Travelstar 2400 RPM drive in an old Matrix VPR 200A5 laptop. The old drive was working fine, just not adequate storage. The WD Scorpio drive is much quieter than the IBM drive. Had to listen closely to even hear it running. Drive performance also appears improved more than the IBM drive in that seek and data transfer rates appear quicker. This is subjective since I have not in fact measured speeds. General I'm completely happy with performance so far. The drive does get hot in my laptop. The VPR Matrix does not have especially good internal cooling and any drive will run hot. However, the WD drive does get hotter than the old IBM drive did. I would give this drive five eggs if it didn't run rather so hot.

Bought this drive for a customers older Toshiba laptop.Wouldnt format in the Windows XP install program. Had to remove and attach to other computer with usb cables to format then put it back in and it was fine. In the last 5 or so years I have purchased many WD hard drives and have never been disappointed.PM'd to under $100

Runs way cooler and way faster than the old 80 gig Toshiba drive that came with my Compaq. It was not tricky to format working with my Rosewill external cable kit I got at Newegg. This device has established to be extremely usefull dealing with tough drive upgrades and use. The Scorpio Blue runs with much much less vibration as well, and is quieter too. I have to listen challenging to hear it. Newegg got it here in two days! NEWEGG ROCKS! I waited toooo long to get this! No other retailer compares to Newegg!I check out other retailers, and Newegg is always ideal. No 1 gives the service that Newegg does. The old Compaq v2000 wouldn't let me use the full drive capacity as a single drive. I went on the internet to Cnet, got some cost-free cloning software, and cloned the old Hd onto the new one particular, took hours to do, but so what. Have a single 80 gig NTFS partition, reformatted the restore partition to fat32 automatically, and left me a New Volume of 223 NTFS gigs. Operates best so far. What an upgrade! My laptop got a new lease on life. Also put in a new two gig memory chip from Newegg, and drastically elevated the speed of the laptop or computer. Operating XP sp3.

This drive has loads of space for a laptop ide hdd. Its enough to carry a little collection of videos with you. I had received a single defective when originally ordered, second was sent and no concerns located. On the very first a single it had a disk read error. Not even spinrite could repair it. Be prepared for the achievable poor hdd, you never know what you may possibly get. All in all this is a fantastic deal and these types of hdd's are difficult to find now days.

Excellent drive. This was used to replace an older Hitachi 100GB 7,200 RPM non-perpendicular drive. The new drive consumes .55A vs. 1.05A on the Hitachi drive. Higher location density tends to make the drive truly fairly a bit faster than the previous a single, regardless of becoming slower rotational speed. The 100GB drive is 3 years old (made in 1񳏆). Far more expensive than it ought to be for the capacity. That's the name of the game though with IDE style drives for laptops. I wish WD created the Scorpio Black in an IDE model; I would rather purchase that model Ɨ.200 RPM on the black model). This was employed to replace a drive in a 12" Powerbook G4. I am purchasing another one from Newegg to replace a drive in a 14" iBook G4.

Real uncomplicated to install in my Dell Insperion/XPS laptop. Was a small worried about if the BIOS would read the big HD due to the fact it was EIDE and not SATA. Thank goodness it works beyond nicely! In no way go wrong on this HD...a lot of space & saves battery power rather of making use of portable HD. Just a single HD spinning on this method. Great for storing music and movies through lengthy trips with family. This was way easy to install...no cons right here, just all Pros! I would suggest you generate a 40GB or 60 GB partition just before installing you Operating System (OS). the rest will be filled with media such as music and video. Keep your MS Word and significant files on SD Cards etc.

Huge physical difficult drive with a PATA interface which largely positively reviewed. Actively unhappy about this drive failure - especially so soon right after installing the OS, updating, transferring information, configuring, and testing. Offered that the "infant mortaility rate of new parts" is alive and accurate, I can't aid wonder if this is this a issue with Western Digital notebook tough drives in general, the Scorpio Blue line, or that the PATA two.five" drives in general are in severe decline. Have noticed a declining supply of PATA two.5" drives from the producers. The notebook which received this drive became unbootable a couple of days ago, and disk diagnostics show write errors and other error counts escalating. I want issues to operate, and this does not aid. Will need to have to RMA the drive, but the replacement will almost certainly arrive in 2+ weeks - may possibly as nicely obtain an additional drive and start off the process of rebuilding, and get the replacement when it comes. Not thrilled with the prospects of receiving a refurb drive when a "new" drive failed so rapidly.

Massive driveRapidReasonably quietSeems to stay cooler (based on the case remaining cool to the touch) than the 80gb toshiba drive it replaced. Tends to make a slight noise when parking the head, not noticeable in most conditions, but if alone in the property and surfing the web, it's audible. This is a very good upgrade for an older pc with a negative drive or if you're running out of space.I wish somebody would make a 500gb drive in the IDE format.

I was able to format the drive to function in my Inspiron 6000 laptop which everywhere I looked on the net it said it wasn't possible...it is and it was simple and I do NOT have intimate understanding of computers. I read for days and days about the limits of my laptop and the 137gb deal....it's not explained nicely on the net but the bios may limit you to 137gb but the pc does NOT, I made one particular partition for 100gb and one more partition for the rest...functions just fine! the drive only reads about 300gb not 320gb but from what I have read that's the way the math functions....I sort of believe it should be labeled a 300gb just to eliminate confusion from persons with typical or beneath information of computers I'm incredibly pleased I was able to replace my 60GB challenging drive in a 4 year old laptop and be up and operating quite speedily with no difficulties.

This is a wonderful drive to extend the life of an older laptop. I have utilized a number of of these drives in older P3 and P4 laptops that came with Windows XP or Windows 2000. Be certain to split the tricky drive into two logical drives, and make sure Drive C has 120 GB or less (as reported by Windows Explorer). Windows 2k and XP will let you give Drive C all 320GB -- you will be Incredibly SORRY if you do this. If you make Drive C 120GB (as reported by Windows Explorer) and let Drive E: have all the rest, you will have no difficulty. If you let Drive C have all 320GB, you will get the major file corruption errors reported by other reviewers. WD doesn't mention the laptop BIOS 48bitLBA drive C limitation, so in several of these testimonials you will read about lots of file corruption complications. These do not happen if you make Drive C 120GB and give the rest to Drive E. (This applies to the WD 160, 250, and 320GB ATA-6 drives.) Note: you also need to update Windows to the most recent service pack. Older laptops do not use 48-bit addressing essential for the BIOS to deal with far more than 120GB. Due to the fact the BIOS interacts only with Drive C, you should make Drive C 120GB or smaller (as reported by Windows Explorer); then make a second drive partition (Drive E:) with all the rest of the space. I use the no cost EASEUS Disk Copy and Partition Master computer software for these tasks. Put the new drive in an external USB case, boot to Disk Copy, copy all of Drive to Drive 1. When the copying is carried out, turn off the laptop, install the new parallel drive, and then use Partition Master to resize drive C of the new drive to  GB. Verify that Windows Explorer sees the drive as 120GB or less! Then use Partition Master to create a new drive E with all the rest. By the way, there are two methods to report drive capacity. That is why Partition Master will say Drive C has 137GB whilst windows reports the drive as only 120 GB. PS. DO NOT MAKE DRIVE C HAVE ALL 320GB, OR YOU WILL BE Quite SORRY.

Upgraded my tricky drive on my Dell B120 from 40GB to 320GB. What a Enormous difference! I had no issues installing the new drive and reloading the OS. Purchased a tough drive enclosure for the old drive so I can have a modest external difficult drive. None so far. Western Digital drives have constantly worked for me. Will continue to buy them.

Big capacity, fairly speedy, affordable. A little noisy compared to the tough drive originally in my Mac. It's my second WD difficult drive in my PowerBook, the very first 1 made a dull clicking sound and was sent back immediately after determining it was about to die. The second is a lot quieter, but it nevertheless makes genuine faint clicks, in all probability just a WD factor, I hope. Just in case, I won't erase/format the original hard drive just however.
