Looks nice and has all the connectivity I needed (FireWire + eSATA + USB). Power switch and LED on front of situation. Compact and eye-catching. Cheaply produced and apparently prone to failure.I was making use of it pretty consistently for about a year, then a single day my personal computer stopped responded. I assumed it was the tough drive inside the case (WD3200AAKS), but I was able to use the drive when connected by means of a diverse USB<->SATA adapter.I looked at the controller board inside the situation and saw that it was very dirty - looks like they don't have a excellent/clean soldering procedure. Soon after coming right here and reading the other evaluations of failures and power complications, I gave up on fixing this and am just putting it in the trash. As far as I can tell, Macally doesn't provide a warranty on this (and I doubt it'd be more than 1 year if they did have one...) I'd complain a lot far more about this if it weren't so low cost. Plus, I was lucky not to lose any data.

I was seeking for an enclosure that had each firewire and usb because I intended on working with it for video production classes as nicely as backing up stuff on my personal computer. It had a good price tag and very good critiques and getting a hard drive to put in it would be about the similar price tag as buying a pre-assembled unit. It was effortless to set up and it feels solid. I haven't had a opportunity to test the esata yet, otherwise no issues however. Purchased this along with a 500gb hard drive. Newegg rocks at shipping. Cost-free three-day shipping and it nevertheless arrived a day early right after traveling over 2000 miles.

Nice seeking, decent speed. I bought two of these for my OS X Server, and each at some point died. 1 just more than a year, 1 just under two years. They triggered my machine to lock up, and I had to get rid of the drives to access the data. DO NOT Obtain. Um, Dont bother with this one particular.

Looks great....has 3 approaches to connect to computer system and dissipates heat well. Each burned out inside the year. Tough drives worked with other connections so it is certainly the enclosures. I bought two...one particular from Newegg and one particular from an additional on the internet. Newegg gave an RMA. The other on the web vendor produced me go by macally RMA approach. Newegg's is more quickly superior and far more hassle-free. Macally's took 3 weeks to acknowledge my emails only immediately after i called their non-toll free number two instances. I sent it to them and it has been over 3 weeks. I known as them and they stated that "maybe if the warehouse sent it over today...they could ship it out". I asked to speak to a manager but got his voicemail....then he in no way called back. Amazing.Next time I wont be buying these situations due to their buyer service (Macally's not Newegg's).

FireWire 400, USB two., eSATA interface. Not certain if the FireWire interface daisy chains, but it does charge my iPod (which by no means worked with FireWire). But won't when only the AC adapter is providing power, no loss truly. Daisy chaining with this huge storage is amazing. If you want speed, go with a SSD or 2.five raptor. There isn't a fan, but I'd rather have a single-significant-quieter fan if there are a lot of of these stacked on top rated of eachother. Power button lights up with a blue LED. not the brightest I've observed, no much more distracting from sleep as the other LEDs on my Inspiron. It dim-blinks with activity, which is pretty cool.

Looks wonderful, comes with rubber padding to minimize any vibration noise. But even without the padding the enclosure doesn't vibrate. Drive slips onto the energy and information connectors a bit looser than I'd like to see, but it isn't going to move right after you put a couple screws in to hold the drive nonetheless. This enclosure WILL work with a 1.5TB drive. You just require to put the legacy jumper on.

Situation matches Mac instancesUSB performs effectively SATA capabilities restricted - can't read drive temperature, limited SATA data and functionsprevents Mac from booting up with USB connectiondoesn't retain drive awesome A real disappointment (see above). Macally says it is "not our device, it is your computer". Poor cooling means only short periods of operation. (rule of thumb: each and every ten degree F raise in temperature above imply specified operating temperature cuts drive life in half). Limited SATA functions stop execution of low level drive functions such as firmware updates, tests, and formatting working with drive manufacturer utilities

- Sturdy, solid aluminum case- SATA connector onboard (no wires)- Metal situation keeps it cool and quiet (fanless)- Looks great in any setup with a Mac - I truly wish the bottom handles had been a small flatter so it could stand without any additional supports or pads and not wobble. Adding anything to the base design actually kills the Mac Pro aesthetic.- Front power light has a lengthy wire that runs to the back electronics inside. Type of gets in the way when installing the drive.- Mine didn't come with an eSATA cable regardless of it becoming in the picture. No regrets at all. I didn't use the integrated cables as I have my own Apple thin FireWire cable, but the USB cable did look a small short to me.

For the cost of the case I am really happy. I have two and use them as my Time Machines for my G4 MDD and more recently a Mac Mini. I have one of them paired with a Western Digital "Green" drive and a second situation paired with an older Seagate 7200 series drive. The situation stays cool and I have only had to restart the WD challenging drive once. Other than needing a FW800 port at this cost I can't feel of any. I don't know if this is since of the case, connection, or WD tricky drive, but my Mac Mini wouldn't wake from sleep or boot. I powered off the external and every thing booted fine and hasn't happened once again. It is connected with a FW800-FW400 cable.

Super quiet...I have the firewire hooked up to my iMac. The metallic look absolutely matches the mac and the drive only "runs" when you try to access it. The situation keeps the tough drive quite cool too. The firewire cord can come out fairly effortlessly if you give the enclosure a tiny jerk. This truly isn't an problem though. Get it if you have a good sata drive and a Mac. A lot of these no-name brands come with low cost packaging but I was slightly impressed with the way this drive was packaged.

1) 95% Strong Aluminum with wonderful ventilation (non-structural back-plate cover is abs plastic- can be removed and left off. It's main use is to hold the middle HD holder from sliding out of the outside via 2-screws.)...two) Stands are incredible- They seriously are strong!!! three) Oxford chipset (top of the line). Great. four) Quick transfer rates5) Standard "black" power plug- can be replaced with Something that outputs 12v dc with + tip. That means if you require a 3amp (vs 2amp) power for a 1.fiveӮ+TB drive, you can cease by any electronic store and pick a single up for cheap, and it's a totally standard plug. I'm working with an old adaptor I located at a utilised electronic shop.6) 2-screws to open (you can leave them off essentially); four mount the HD. Not bad for a properly ventilated situation that looks this nice. 7) It freakin ROCKS. Basically place. I've got like 12 several HD externals, and this is my preferred. On par or Superior with the MiniPod variants and the ThermalTake "SilverRiver duo" but nicer than all of the 1) These would be perfect if they had been *lightly sanded* before becoming completed- some of the edges are a bit sharp. two) 2amp PSU is NOT adequate for the most significant beefiest HD's out there- Macally ought to be taking care of this soon...?Some HD's run fine on 2amp, but most would be far better suited with a 3amp PSU. 3) LED wires will need to be bent/routed/snaked a bit to clear the HD mounting screws (Hd's mount utilizing bottom screws to a frame). Aa piece of electrical tape fixed this and offered some drive vibration damping. Virtually a plus: Macally could consist of a tiny piece of plastic or electrical tape for each side and this would be a plus)four) Cables are brief, but this isn't a con precisely- most folks will have these on their desks or on Prime of their Pc's, and shorter cables are safer... I got these following two weeks of reading reviews and worrying about sufficient power for a Samsung 1.5HD as nicely as future Hd's. So far no concerns with 2amp- but I have a 3amp PSU ready.Generally:I was fairly pleased when I opened the box. The situation is properly created, and Nicely worth the funds. I'll be ordering three or four a lot more. Newegg- GET THE NAS VERSIONS!!! Newegg ought to carry these in ALL their variants that Macally stocks, esp. if they upgrade these tiny PSU's to 3amp. I'd enjoy the electrical tape/plastic shims for drive vibration and 4 rubber bumper feet for these of us who may possibly want to maintain this lying far more flat than vertical. Overall, this 1 kicks my other enclosures out the door, even though it's not as insulated as my completely sealed ones. The fundamental aftermarket replaceable PSU plug typical jack is Awesome (and standard 12voltǘӯamp +post) make replacing this component a breeze. It's well ventilated and I'll install a small fan for my hotter HD's in the next batch (you can rig it to the LED

looks sick, operates fine. though i ran no benches on rw speed, must perform fine for any person wanting a cool looking external - energy on button is a good addition claims two distinct mount possibilities for tower orientation- if you take into account screw on feet that rotate about the screw a answer then this is accurate, otherwise the base really should suit you fine purchased for a buddy and in the short time hes had it there have been no troubles with read/write to a 500gb wd for casual backupon a side note - i read a mod for this enclosure where notebook owners with broken displays rebuilt a mini desktop inside. looks pretty cool, like a macpro mini

Remains cool to the touch without the will need for a cooling fan. Fantastic throughput and versatility with three interface versions on the unit. Infrequent problem with inaccessibility of the tough drive by the SATA controller. There is no require to install the tab feet on the edge of the drive enclosure. four cheap square stick-on rubber feet from a local hardware store, the unit is stable (sitting on its broad side) and sits off the desk for enough air circulation. Macally should just incorporate the feet in the packaging.

Strong item, specifically what I was seeking for. Considering that I use this to daisy chain my old drive and hook it up to my Mac, it works wonderful. The extra eSATA capability ought to come in handy when I upgrade my personal computer in the future. Inserting challenging disk was straightforward and runs incredibly properly. Just simply because it's a Mac certain product, the price is a small steep. If you're prepared to spend, then its fine, but this seemed the only selection I had. Could do a comparable product that's a little less costly. With a fan.

Solid case, easy to assemble. So far, incredibly trustworthy. Cables had been lengthy sufficient for me. The fact they had been included at all I consider to be icing on the cake. Supplied backup software CD consists of adware (according to my AV computer software). Would have been five eggs if not for that. Do oneself a favor and toss the CD in the trash. I challenge NewEgg & McAlly to clarify the adware. If you don't like the cables that came with the unit, invest a few additional bucks and get precisely what you want.

Nice hunting, solid feel, uncomplicated to install drive. There is just 1 issue with this otherwise nice external drive housing. It seems that the on/off button acts a lot more like a standby switch. What I mean is that when I have it connected but off, my method hangs up on boot for about 45 seconds as if it nevertheless senses it, right after which the boot approach continues normally. I know that it’s this issue because if I disconnect its eSATA cable the hang up doesn’t take place. On the other hand if it’s turned on when I boot my system, the boot course of action finds it correct away and continues as it really should. Issue is that the on/ off button is such that the device will not come on when I turn on my surge protector, as with all my other peripheral and with every other external drive housings I’ve ever owned. Instead the on/off button need to be pushed every time. This implies that if I don’t want to get the 45 second hang up, I must push its on/off button just after turning on my pc, which is just a bit of a pain. If it had a positive acting on/of switch, this would be the best external drive housing.

- Very sturdy case- All ports function as expected (tested all on WinXP, and firewire/usb on Win2k)- Drive remains cool due to solid metal construction and perforated front face- 4-40 threaded holes on narrowest side for secure mounting - Firewire will not power case - Extruded aluminum outer shell with side cut-outs; .072" materials thickness- Case rattled a bit when I very first assembled it; inner portion slides into outer extruded shell, so I squeezed the outer shell until it yielded slightly, providing higher friction and elimination of the vibration- Back plate is made of plastic, and is the weakest portion of complete design. Two smaller screws secure this plate to the inner portion, while the edge of the plastic plate pushes against the outer case extrusion, holding the complete point together; if the case were properly dropped, this would be the most likely failure mode.

The case is a extremely good ripoff of the Apple MacPro tower enclosure style and is mainly aluminum. Getting a power button on the front is an outstanding feature. The drive gets warm, to be confident, but the cooling appears sufficient. The style isn't without flaws, and nor is the construction. Particularly shallows screws secure a plastic back plate of extremely questionable good quality. There is no manner of bumpers or rubber washers to secure the drive, which leads to a noisy enclosure. The LED on the front is not almost as poor as some makes, but is still garishly vivid (the point is to tell you it's on, a incredibly dim LED would suffice). But the accurate failing of this enclosure is that with significant capacity drives it is Extremely unreliable. The power supply is only rated to 2A, which is inadequate for the demands of big drives, and this causes them to unmount during sustained transfers. This happens regularly in the course of any file write procedure lasting additional than about five minutes with a 1.5tb Seagate Barracuda. Selling a drive with an inadequate power provide for the higher finish of modern tough drives, with no making this crystal clear in the stated needs for the drive, is just shameful. The lengths technologies organizations go to to save a buck totally blows my mind. I mean, how significantly far more could a 3A power supply cost?

I have a dilemma where the drive eventually will stop responding to the computer, generating it hang. Unplugging and replugging in the enclosure does not repair it. I have to turn off the enclosure and turn it back on before my Mac will be in a position to access it.This risks corrupting the whole file method. This occurs frequently. Within a day or two I constantly lose get in touch with with the drive.Customer support has been no support.I does not matter if I connect USB or Firewire.I possibly forced to acquire an additional enclosure. Terrific looks, compliments my iMac nicely. A lot more than one connection kind available on the back. Uncomplicated drive installation. Rugged case, I'm not too worried about this thing finding beaten up when I take it with me. Back panel is plastic; I fully grasp why they did this, but it would have been considerably nicer with a metal back panel. Sometimes the cases can be a little tight with regards to the sliding parts when installing/removing a drive. Requirements a dimmer switch for the power LED on the front; personally I don't have a issue with the brightness, but persons have complained about it in these critiques, and I've had a couple of comments when people have observed them on my desk. I haven't had any of the issues individuals have mentioned with regards to insufficient power supplies on these units. I have three of these and have installed the WD 1Tb Green drives in them, no concerns with them unmounting or not getting responsive. I can see how this might take place if the drive you decide on has power needs on the greater-end, so buyer beware.
