The create top quality of this point is amazing - it was considerably less complicated to place together than a Maddog enclosure I have (which is also really nice and more affordable as well). Solid physique and pieces fit collectively very snugly giving a good sense of safety when it comes to the internal connector. Metal (not junky plastic) body acts as a heatsink (it may possibly get a bit hot). Extra 1394 port for daisy-chaining is nice. Comes with clear guidelines and a driver CD which wasn't needed since it worked out of the box through FireWire on each my Vista notebook and my Mac. A bit additional high-priced than other selections (but it's worth it). Doesn't help to mute the sound or vibration coming from the drive - but this is okay due to the fact it's little size tends to make up for it. You could land a freakin' airplane with the blue/red LED on the front, but absolutely nothing a bit of electrical tape can't repair =) On/Off switch is a good function. Came with six screws in total - four are utilised for attaching the challenging drive, the guidelines don't say anything about the other 2. Came with all cables necessary, of course. Didn't get to try out the USB ports yet though - FireWire is significantly faster.

This is a very solidly built, enclosure with FireWire and USB. I have two of these and use them to backup data on place to transport back to the server in my office - about 30-50MB per download. I use a Mac and there wasn't' any software or hardware troubles. Install, format and use. Effortless. Installing HD is genuinely straightforward, normal Phillips (crosshead) screws integrated. It's a tight fit but that's a great issue; there is no play for the HD to jostle around. Heat dissipation by means of aluminum is good but they don't have a fan. Also, they draw power from the FireWire cable and don't need to have AC power. For the size, high quality and ease of use I believe it's good. There are two cons for me. 1) The back side, where you open it to install a HD is kind of inexpensive plastic and doesn't fit with the all round excellent of the aluminum physique. 2) The grey rubber strips that run along the prime and bottom lengths retain slipping out. I've lost a couple of of the strips more than the time I've had them just by handling the drives in and out of my backpack. Not a wonderful style. I also have two of the bigger Macally Aluminum 3.5" External Enclosures that have all of the same advantages and challenges. The only distinction is the three.five" enclosures want AC power.

- Extremely, very effortless to set up the drive- dual firewire ports let the enclosures to be "daisy chained" - none so far, while (as other people have mentioned) the blue light is incredibly bright - make confident that you obtain the correct enclosure ... the PHRS is for a SATA drive, and the PHR for the older style drives (IDE I feel)

Aluminum housing, good and sturdy. Firewire, much better sustained transfer rates than USB. The original drive from my MacBook slid proper in with no trouble at all. Bus power makes it good, no require for extra power cords. Is this thing supposed to get so hot? The great massive "FireWire/USB2." lettering across the best is sort of lame, but certainly that doesn't affect the operation any. Status light is really bright. I decided to upgrade harddrives at the very same time as Snow Leopard and I didn't want the old drive sitting around. It doesn't get any much easier than this, people.

I have some older PATA enclosures from MacAlly, so I knew the worth of the aluminum enclosure as a heat sink for the drive inside. (I employed three external FireWire drives with my laptop in west-central Africa for a year. A desk fan blowing on the enclosures assisted to maintain them in a secure heat range.) The rubber strips top and bottom enable with stacking the drives, thermally insulate them from each and every other, and supply some cushioning, as well. This new enclosure is even much better than the old ones. Two FireWire ports on the back (I haven't tried daisy-chaining, yet) and a USB 2 port. Also a power port, and this time they included a USB-to-energy cord with the USB data and FireWire cables. It performs on FireWire bus energy just fine with no require for an further energy cord.A single good addition in this case is an on-off switch on the back of the unit. The old ones lacked this function. I could complain about lack of eSATA, but why, at this value? Also, I don't actually have a machine with eSATA proper now, so why bother? The drive installs securely, [Newegg censored] <attached with pins having a helical ridge> to the metal base of the enclosure. I was worried, at very first, at the angle at which I had to hold the drive to clear the electronics at the end of the base and nevertheless engage the connectors. There was no issue. The blue/red read/write LED is great, and all screws and cables have been integrated.

The case is good, and easy to place in a hard drive. When the drive is installed, it feels sturdy and does a very good job maintaining it cool beneath hefty use. I purchased this for use as a backup drive for my Macbook Pro. When below hefty use, the drive wants much more energy than is supplied by the USB information cable, so you'll will need to use the USB power cable that comes with it as nicely. To use two USB ports for a laptop for a backup drive is rough. I would have preferred a power plug vs a energy USB cable. The energy usage is common for drives heavily utilised (as with backups). A single USB cable is good, and fine for light use, but not a possibility for backups.

Fantastic tiny enclosure. Extremely strong feel, and very sturdy. Dropped a 320GB SATA in it and I was up and operating in minutes. Considerably higher quality than I expected for the cost. The on/off switch sticks out on the back a bit and seems a little ugly and unnecessary. A firewire 800- adapter or cable would be a great bundle-in since new macs only have FW800. As folks have already stated here, when you put the case back on you have to get the bottom into a small channel. Hard to feel anybody would attempt to force the case on when it's not in that channel, but apparently some people require explicit directions. :)The enclosure comes with a short USB to mini-B cable, a firewire 400-400 cable, and a USB to power cable (which I didn't need to make the drive function, but some laptops may.) No AC power adapter is included, as stated in the description.

1. Rugged construction - this will let you employing your challenging drive with longer lifespan and in harsh environment.2. On board switch will allow you to turn the drive on soon after you connect the cable and place it on a stable surface.3. Hefty - adding stability (could also be a con due to the fact it reduces mobility).4. Fantastic compatibility for me: Operates on Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6, both USB and Firewire port. 1. The space clearance is restricted. I place a 9mm drive in and there is merely clearance on the major of the drive. If you have a 9.5mm drive it will not fit into this enclosure (not as claimed).2. The USB power is a bit tricky. The USB information cable will be adequate to energy it on my mac mini. Even so, it cannot provide adequate power from my desktop workstation. When I connect the usb energy cable to my Pc, it functions, even though both USB ports (power and data) are in fact from the exact same 9-pin port on my motherboard. When a single USB wouldn't energy it on? I am utilizing an ASUS mobo and a Lian-Li case and a Antec 500W energy unit, all are good stuffs. Concerning some fellows cannot get firewire perform on windows vista, there is actually a perform about. Check "Step-by step directions are found on the Microsoft assistance web page, understanding base report: 948911. " to resolve it.Also, if it comes with a pouch, it will be nicer, for ฮ+ enclosure, a single dollar pouch would not be a burden.

Daisy chaining IEEE 1394a, this model is the only selection. Each FW ports are full size six-circuit connectorsOxford chipset. With stable power source on from Computer side (read: 12 volts; 1 amp) with a std 6 pin can power a WD 320 Black 7.2K rpm. Daisy chaining WILL demand external USB power. Why most users can NOT power by means of FW or USB only, read other thoughts...Heat dissipation is the purpose I have three of these enclosures. One particular led with blue (on/power) and red (read/write).Led can be utilised as a light source. Light supply too bright? Can usually use a black felt tip marker, fine tip works great :-)IEEE P1394 Working Group specifications, read other thoughts… Largest con is Apple, Sony and the rest of the IEEE P1394 Operating Group who obstructed acceptance of FW by extorting OEM’s with high royalties and conflicting specifications. Due to the fact Apple and even Sony have stepped back from fragmenting the IEEE1394 specification group, this may well turn out to be a boon for consumers. Most laptops shave weight and pennies by going with substandard chipsets/caps, therefore so a lot of troubles with FW compatibility. Same goes for prebuilt Computer’s, shame on you Sony and HP!This is why USB is still so well-known, even even though it will use way additional resources. However most pre-built Pc’s tend to below power even the USB bus.At least with USB, the finish user can usually locate an external powered USB hub.If the USB can out place stable power at five volt and at lest 1 amp, the secondary power input is moot. Most mobo choke at .five amp, practically all lappies wont even do the minimum volt, let alone amps!Wish OEM’s would just stick with 12 volt out put on FW.

Exceptional heat dissipation, principal physique of case is really solidly constructed. Firewire/USB connections operate effectively. Utilised Acronis Uncomplicated Migrate application, made an exact copy of my old 120 GB, swapped the drives (easily fits inside my Toshiba Satellite P105-S6084) and booted up with no issues. Finish caps are plastic and held in with screws that are marginally larger than an ant's head (Mine came with two spares, quite thoughtful of them) - would prefer metal ends with machine screws. Had to purchase a 6pin to 4pin Firewire cable, but that's hardly Macally's fault. I applied a WD Scorpio Black 320GB HD (WD3200BEKT) - it will fit, but you have to be quite gentle. I discovered that lightly compressing the sides of the case would bow the top of it just adequate for it to slide in with out scratching the sticker. The Toshiba drive from my laptop had more clearance issues, but was in a position to get it assembled without scratching the sticker.

Superior finish, comes with all needed cables. Some have complained about drives becoming a tight fit, but if you are careful about sliding the drive in, you won't have a challenge. I applied this with a typical WD two.five" drive, and it's fine. Employing with the Firewire connection, you want the (included) USB cable for power, taking up two ports on your machine and having two cables is a bit messy. Not the enclosure's fault, even though. Also, the firewire cable is the common type, which indicates you'll require an adapter to use it with the smaller port on notebooks. I got this for my daughter mainly because one of her professors demanded they have a firewire drive. Due to the fact you need a USB port for power anyway, why not just use a six-to-four pin USB and be performed with it? It would be a lot more affordable, too. The school makes use of Macs. Adequate stated.

1. Sturdy aluminum constructiontwo. Energy switchthree. two FireWire 400 ports My only difficulty with this enclosure is that you have to remove six screws to get your drive out of the enclosure and off of the board. Thoughts you, this will only bother you if you have to swap the drives additional then about 4 times. Otherwise, it's a actually petty thing to call a con. It comes with every thing you require to use it with any pc. It also has rubber rails on the prime and bottom to avoid slipping.

This point works Truly nicely. Under no circumstances had a challenge with screw stripping, formatting, or changing partition tables for GUID/MBR. Good construction, straightforward setup Plastic end caps This is a lot nicer that I was expecting. I agree that the end caps are worrisome, but I can understand their reasoning on the power end and due to the fact the drive mounts with the connector toward the front, energy will be there also. Functions like a charm! The LED is incredibly bright, I'm glad I don't have to sleep with it. Easy sufficient to tone down, Put a piece of Electrical tape over it before you lock the drive in the situation..I'd absolutely by yet another...

usb and firewire Unit functioned perfectly cloning my macbook hdd utilizing only the firewire 400 port - did not want further energy from usb/power adapter. There was not a single read or write error. The subsequent day I plugged it in to use it for my 1st Time Machine back-up, energy light came on but it would not mount on the desktop and the macbook could only see that there was a firewire device connected, it could not identify it. Spent about an hour trying to figure out what was wrong with no luck. USB connection (with usb/power cable) worked perfectly. Macally's site is virtually useless in obtaining enable as their FAQ or understanding base has virtually zero valuable content. I looked all more than the site but could not find a technical help phone number or contact form. Type of shocking really.

Built good quality is fairly great. Energy switch, Aluminium enclosure. USB and firewire. Firewire is not bus powered with my Thinkpad SL400. I had to use the usb powerwire, so that is an further cord to use. With my testing, Firewire file transfer was slower than USB2.I believed in actual life Firewire was faster, but i was incorrect. Possibly it is more rapidly on a Mac. I dont know.High priced. as everyone mentioned, blue led is quite bright. I enjoy this little enclosure. I needed a SATA interface for my MacBook HDD swap, but I really wanted FireWire simply because USB would demand however one more cable for the a/c adaptor. Ugh. But the only other two.five" enclosure I could come across was 3 times the value of this Macally. When I found this, I jumped on it. It performs wonderful, the HDD swap was simple, and FireWire powers the drive with no difficulties, so I only have a single cable on the desk. They're not kidding- the LED on this issue is Bright! You could not want this point on at night in a space you're attempting to sleep in... I would acquire it once more. And I just may well, given that I want even additional external storage now...
