-Buss powered-FireWire and USB-Comes with all the cables -Wicked vibrant LED (like land an aircraft with the factor)-Finding the drive in is a very tight squeeze. I wouldn't use it if I was taking drives in and out of it frequently. It does what it's supposed to and fairly reliably with my small family of Macs. Getting the drive in the enclosure the top rated scrapes across the drive so I won't be altering it. Also the LED is insanely bright, if you share your bedroom with your computer system, forget about attempting to sleep with this drive powered on in the exact same space.

Yet another solid product from Macally. I've owned this model's PATA cousin, the PHR-250CC, for over a year and this 1 appears to be of a similar grade. Nice and heavy. Throughput and reliability of Firewire when you will need it & the flexability and convenience of USB2 when needed. My only complaint is that it doesn't come with the protective soft case like my older PHR-250CC did. I like it.

Here is encounter from Macbook pro unibody 1st Generation 񢉘 model):-Firewire functions great and powered-nice solid case-lots of connection choices. two Firewire for daisy chaining can connect more firewire devices if you have only one Firewire port , and 1 usb, also an additional USB power port. -Fits 9.5mm drives for certain. It will be tight, but it fits.-Has a power switch.-has rubber sitting for drives and for the enclosure to reduce vibration. But I nevertheless have to put one thing heavy on it to lessen it to zero.-around 20-25mb/s for firewire connection. Did a 220 gig transfer in two.five hours. Not negative i guess.-i could boot off the drive using firewire. Haven't tried usb, but must. -I was afraid the neighbours would consider the cops had been here because the led lights flashing Vibrant red and blue!! Implies i can't seriously leave it on at night when sleeping. I'll have to just paint the led black with liquid paper to cover that. not a big issue.-heard evaluations saying firewire ceases to operate following a few times. This is worrying me a bit, hope they fixed it. I used this to migrate my 250 gig to the 500 hitachi 7k500. Just boot snow leopard dvd then install the os into the firewire drive. Then boot from the FW drive immediately after, and it will prompt you to migrate. Then opt for the solution to migrate from the drive in "this" mac (the old drive inside your mac). Right after that. reboot to just test it out, if it operates, put it in the mac.220 gig transfer took around two.five hours employing firewire.

Case is solidly built of aluminum, promising good heat dissipation. Finish caps are plastic but appear solid. All cables are provided: Firewire, mini USB to USB, and a USB to power cable. Extra 3mm finish cap screws provided. Yes, LED is bright but it's reassuring to me to see ongoing disc activity and you can constantly tape itover. I have NOT heard any of the whining noise the earlier reviewer describes. No complications with Firewire connection to a Mac. Price really a bit more than a USB-only enclosure but the Firewire sped up what I needed to do: was worth it for me. Used it to clone a MacBook HD to a new Western Digital 160 GB drive also purchased from Newegg, then swapped the drives. Simplest way I could discover to upgrade the HD. Worked fantastic. Ultimately I'll pick up a different HD and use this as an external Time Machine backup drive.

Quite solid construction on the drive. I've had the earlier generation (IDE) of this drive for over a year with out a single issue and the newer SATA drive continues in the exact same tradition. Dual Firewire 400 ports permit for straightforward daisy-chaining of a number of drives, a wonderful plus if you have a number of as I do and only one firewire port. The added benefit of USB 2. makes it compatible with virtually just about every modern computer system and Operating Program (within the last six years) out there, provided you have the drive properly formatted. Superb heat dissipation via the aluminum casing, keeping the drive running cool and quiet. I did come across it challenging to install the drive as the fit was a bit tight when sliding the hard drive into the enclosure, but when installed, it has worked perfectly. If you get this enclosure, you will not be disappointed.

Solid develop except for the front and back plastic covers. Incredibly bright LED - really effortlessly eliminated with a modest piece of black electrical tape more than the inside of the led hole. I actually don't care to see the light at all, I know when it's on or off or accessing.Design is tight, but not as tight as some folks seem to report. see other thoughts. The firewire ports have died, which is the only reason for -1 Egg. Not a large deal, USB isn't significantly slower. Purchased October 2008, nonetheless in use as backup drive. I back up files, then turn it off and leave it off.I paired mine with WD3200BEKT (Item# N82E16822136280) and didn't have any scraping difficulties. The main thing you need to have to watch when replacing the HD plate into the best piece is the slot you slide it into, there's an actual slot, and then there's the inside lip above that. If you try to squeeze it in with 1 or each sides on the inner lip of the outside case then it WILL scrap along the top.Make confident the pieces match up appropriately before you brute force it in place and destroy your HDD and it's warranty at the similar time.

One of the most sturdy and finest functioning external enclosures you can get in the low cost range. I own various of these in both the PATA and SATA format. It is slightly much more high-priced than some other brands, but the case is much a lot more sturdy than others and I have had interface concerns with it. Trying some other brands I have had construct high quality and functional troubles with them. These have in no way given me difficulty. Each USB and Firewire indicates maximum flexibility with unique machines and platforms. Does not come with a power adapter. This is necessary if employing with unpowered 4-pin firewire. The function around is to also connect the USB adapter. The case holds the drive nicely but not the cords and adapters. With the newer low power lap top drives I generally believed they could add a tiny rechargeable battery to deal with the surges so it wouldn't want two USB cords to get about USBs 500ma limit (all these external drives have this concern). But then the price and size would be greater.

Excellent cost, easy install, worked instantly none so far I have owned a larger macally drive for a number of years. I wasn't crazy about some aspects of the case but it has generally worked no matter how quite a few drives I swapped. With this one I had a bootcamp partition on my old laptop drive I couldn't get transfered over. Right after operating Fusion and putting my old drive in this case it worked great - long sufficient for me to get data off it despite the fact that I can use it in the future if I want. This case seriously helped and worked great...

Comment:
Really solid, extremely rugged, metal case except for the plastic finish caps. Almost certainly subsequent to indestructible. Exceptional connectivity possibilities (Firewire 400 w/ passthru, USB), as properly as regular 5V barrel connector. Bus powered off of Firewire, most USB ports (usual exceptions apply). Aluminum shell acts as exceptional heat sink. Reasonably quick (best over Firewire, particularly on Macs). Comes with all cables, such as a USB to energy adapter. Difficult drive inside mounted solid, without cables, with shock/vibration absorbing rubber grommets. Compact for it's construction. Rubber 'rails' on best and bottom excellent for absorbing vibrations, anti-slip, stacking with other two.five" Macallys (at least, PHR-series models.) On most systems, driver CD is completely unnecessary. Crazy Macally flashing blue/red LED (standard on Macallys). Aforementioned installation complications (scratched labels, and so on.) - not genuinely a major deal to me. My challenging drive was out of warranty so I peeled the label off so that the top would make better get in touch with with the case. While HD screws are beefy, the case screws are short and modest, but spares are supplied, as they are straightforward to lose. Documentation sparse, in particular regarding what the numerous lights mean (mine starts off blue but at times just goes solid red even in the course of idle). I've heard Macally support is below par but have by no means necessary to call or email them. I utilized this case for the old hard drive in my Macbook Pro when I replaced it, it's 1 of the couple of models on the industry that supports both Firewire and USB in the two.five" laptop hard drive size. I swear by Macallys, this is actually my fourth 1 I've purchased, and I'll continue to acquire them until I discover something far better. The case feels very solid, if I believed the hard drive would survive it, I wouldn't hesitate to drop this factor off a multi-story building. A typical complaint seems to be that the drive fits tight in the case, but this ensures that the bulk of the case, aluminum, makes contact and acts as a enormous heatsink. It is maybe a perfect scale replica of the three.five" PHR series, if you've ever employed one of those. It will only accept the normal 9mm thick tough drives although. Biggest complaint: I wish that Macally had included some sort of documentation about what the LED colors mean. It looks a lot bigger in the 'case in an individual's hand' picture than it is in genuine life.

Good rugged/sturdy enclosure Drives fit so tightly in the enclosure that the drive label is scratched as it and the board are seated into the enclosure. Doesn't come with a cable for the smaller 1394 connector utilized on most laptops. Tough to give a fantastic or bad review when the item arrives dead.

Tiny, low-cost, simple to set up. Rubber tracks decrease vibration noise, which is superior in situations where I'm working with audio. Modest, which makes it effortless to throw in my bag and forget about. None per se. The drive came with a USB information cable and a USB power cable. It requires each if you use the original information cable. I located a shorter, fatter data cable and now it works fine getting energy from just that. Firewire worked no dilemma.

Feels incredibly solid, all metal construction except for the plate on the back about the switches. Comes with all the cables you want. Runs information and energy on 1 cable, extremely important to me. And, it's A lot smaller than my other enclosures. (it's for s 2.5" drive so that makes sense). Firewire/USB... I could have lived with just USB, but due to the fact this was for my Mac, loving the firewire! Though it's a quite tight fit, if you tighten the screws all the way you must *just* clear the best with out touching. Do NOT force it!! If it's not clearing, make sure you are sliding the bottom plate below the tabs in the case as the directions show. The LED, while I like it showing two colors for activity, is quit-traffic-bright! If you want a case for this drive, I just stuck it in an old case I had for a Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC and it fit 100% excellent with room for the cable. If you go on Dell.com and appear for component 310-2924 - you will see what I mean. It seriously fits it like it was created for it! Also, I saw these on that auction web site (can't post the name for some reason) for like ŭ - just appear for Dell Axim X5 case. Make confident it looks like the Official pic at dell

it's like a giant's thumb-drive. Set up was definitely effortless. Directions were clear. Tight fit for very good cooling, and screws in HDD means no chance of it becoming jostled inside.Solid and light enclosure with incredible cooling and nice form-factor.On/off switch indicates I don't require to unplug the thing to shut it off.Firewire daisy-chaining worked flawlessly on my major rig, and usb support works well w/ my eee-pcCame with second (optional) usb cord to plug into the power socket if the drive inside needed additional juice. Mine ran fine with out it although. Fees a lot, but I'd expect to pay a lot more for such high quality.I won' be in a position to go back to other poorly produced enclosures once again. I bought this to go along with my Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500gb drive. I necessary one thing light with excellent cooling, and w/ firewire daisy chaining assistance. I'm preparing on running this w/ two other macally three.five inch externals hooked up permanently to my major machine.W/ it's usb support, it's going to be utilized it as my portable drive to go along with my EEE-pc. I don't anticipate it to do any heavy lifting, so I wanted one thing w/ low power usage.

Difficult metal enclosure, extended rubber strips on top and bottom for vibration insulation and a no slip grip on surfaces. Getting the choice of Firewire 400 and usb two. ports is wonderful and ensures that you can connect this enclosure to any modern pc. It comes with all of the cables you will need. The screws that hold on the plastic front and back of the case are quite brief, and I am worried about the plastic getting stripped out and not becoming able to secure the plastic front and back. The activity LED is quite bright. Just by the feel of the case you can tell that it is really high quality. If I ever want an additional enclosure (which I will eventually) I will certainly get yet another one of these. Newegg has the ideal cost that I could discover.

I employed one of these to temporarily home a 320GB 2.five" drive I bought to upgrade my two-year-old Macbook Amateur. I purchased this certain 1 due to the fact it has Firewire. Works beautifully. There is a separate USB powercord that works in conjunction with the Firewire cable. It's a pretty tight fit to slide the disk back into the enclosure, but don't panic. It all fits together nicely. I will now use this as a portable external drive, utilizing my original macbook harddrive. A lot smaller and portable than any of the (much larger) three.5" Icydock external drives I have. None. If you like Icydock three.five" circumstances (I adore them) you will like this two.5" case. My technique in upgrading my internal drive was to put the new, larger drive in this case very first, then copy my original internal drive to the new drive, then move the new drive into the Macbook. Method worked well and was incredibly effortless.

On/Off SwitchBus PoweredUSB and Dual Firewire PortsShock Absorbers Bought this to enclose a WD Scorpio Black 320gb 7200.Clearance is so tight that it peeled the warranty label off, hope the drive doesn't die on me any time soon. Even with the label gone the sound of scratching metal isn't too comforting.Screws to mount HDD to tray need to be super tight in order to fit in the enclosure. IE, i had to use one hand to squeeze the HDD and tray together in order to compress the rubber spacers and use the other hand to screw the screws down further.Soon after it took me 30 mins for such a easy install, the HDD wasn't detect by numerous computers including both Vista and XP OS's. I got the pop-up balloons stating a new device had been detected but My Computer wasn't registering anything. Device Manager detected the HDD although.Answer: I had to initialize and format the HDD through Laptop or computer Management, which took a couple hours. So i'm not certain if the drive was un-formatted or what.Supplied mini USB to USB Cable is only 2 Ft lengthy. HDD will be swapped with stock MBP Unibody HDD as soon as it arrives in a couple of weeks, I just required a portable drive for school ASAP.

Quality construction. The drive is solidly attached inside once installed. No wiggling around even when moving the enclosure. Firewire speeds, USB 2. (which I haven't applied). Additional high priced than most other enclosures. I bought this enclosure to clone the 100 GB drive in my Macbook to a 320 GB 7200 RPM Seagate. The installation of the drive in the enclosure was simple and the drive was solidly attached inside when accomplished. No movement or rattling unlike some other enclosures I've employed. When I'd cloned the new Seagate I installed it in my Macbook and am now employing the 100 GB drive for backups. I haven't tried USB two., but Firewire works fine.

If you're like me, a USB two interface is a nice fallback-- but I run this drive on my FW400 interface to leave bandwidth for my USB 2 devices. It does specifically as claims, was simple to use, and has been extremely dependable. Doesn't look too shabby, either. None, definitely. Back and front plates are plastic-- could wear over time if you put new drives in this a lot, but that is a pretty small complaint. If you want some thing other than just a USB2 external laptop drive case, this is a wonderful enclosure.

Does what it's supposed to do. :) Tough drive internally screws to the interface board, so it's really solidly connected. Doesn't really feel like a affordable good quality enclosure. Only FW 400, 1394A, 4 pin connected. The macbook 13" has the FW800, 1394B, which will demand a 4-ɵ pin adapter cable, but nonetheless use FW400 speeds. FW800 is a 9-pin connection which runs about twice as fast as FW400 and USB2.. I learned this the difficult way, luckily newegg takes stuff back. Order the 1394B enclosure for your macbook and save yourself some time and hassle. I'm obtaining the Rosewill 1394B enclosure for more quickly speeds and much better compatibility with the macbook
