Western Digital WD5000AAKS Caviar Blue Hard DriveIt's odd how when you buy this drive raw you get a 36-month warranty, but buy the exact drive encased in a Mybook enclosure you only get a 12 month warranty. My Mybook Pro with this drive failed after 18 months, and every inquiry to Western Digital has been totally ignored. I guess they have more customers than they need. I'll never buy another WD product.

Western Digital WD5000AAKS Caviar Blue Hard DriveFaulted after about 5 hours use and no amount of WD Diags (five hours a run)solves the issues. The drive runs quiet, and cool, but locks up, and in diag mode keeps finding bad blocks that it reported good the run immediately before. If I was an engineer I'd say it is the firmware or the board itself, not the platters or heads or actual damage. But I'm not, so all I'll say is add on a hypothetical $20-$25 bucks to courier this unit back to the factory a couple times before you give up, (because chances are all I'll get as a replacement is a refurbished unit that marginally passes S.M.A.R.T. one out of three times) plus whatever you figure your time is worth when you make your purchasing decision. I bought another brand at the same time for the RAID on that machine, it is running alone of course no RAID, but was equal cost, size, quiet. cool, and hasn't faulted. RMA process with WD starts smooth, but you have to give them a card deposit of about $187 till they get the busted drive.

The old one still works fine and have set it up to store my music files on. Needed this one to install Vista on my new rebuild. Works great and runs the software faster than IDE ever would. A Great Buy and a Great Price!!!

The only problem i had was RAID striping, mirroring nightmare with EVGA 680i SLI MOBO (RAID controller failure), system crashed 3 times during overclocking process), after reformat, little search and bios upgrade never gives a single problem again. Use always Anti-Static Wrist Strap or rubber gloves to avoid problems. I make smoke granade from old maxtor HD with static electric discharge with single finger touch (temperature check LOL). WD CAVIAR SE16 500Gb is fast, quiet and really cheap. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Western Digital WD5000AAKS Caviar Blue Hard DrivePurchased July 2, 2007. Worked perfectly for 1 year to the month. Last night (July 21) , it just completely died for no reason whatsoever. When it's connected to either of my 2 identical systems, the BIOS won't even come up?!?!?!? I'm 2 weeks past the Mfg warranty, so needless to say I'm completely ticked off!!!! Thank God I was smart enough to have updated backups on a Maxtor (8 year old 20 GB hard drive that's never given me a lick of trouble), or for the 2nd time in a year, a Western Digital product would have cost me years worth of data.

Much better reliability than Seagate, numerous seagates broke after 6mo, the only ones of these I've heard to not work were a DoA, definately a HUGE plus!

Western Digital WD5000AAKS Caviar Blue Hard DriveThese are awesome and stable drives. You do need to have reasonably good cooling to keep them happy. Also, the previous reviewer who's review makes no sense whatsoever, mentioned that this HDD comes with no cables. This is true, because it is an OEM drive. Most people prefer to select cables that suit their needs, instead of paying for a ''bundle'' that might not work out for them. A 16MB buffer coupled with a fairly large file cache allow this drive to perform very well and with low activity. But even if your system is booting up or moving large files, this HDD operates very quietly. If you want to build a relatively cool and quiet system that still runs real fast, this would be the HDD of choice.

I own a computer repair store, and I'm returning those China built seagates most of the time, nearly 20% fail in the first year. Western Digital on the other hand are less then 1% failure rate in the first year, that is why I recommend them to all my customers. Yes they cost a little more, but you get what you pay for!

No noticeable noise above fans and other drives. Amazing quality and space for the price. If you're looking for a new HDD go for this one.
