Without a Fan this enclosure heats up like a small furnace in a matter of hrs. For $20 it's not a bad price to pay. It works and it serves it's purpose as a temp external drive until I get something better.

First of all, for 20 bucks you can't go wrong here. The unit is sturdy, but as mentioned in other reviews the USB cable is waaaay to short. Also, the power connector is not ''snug'' to the unit, mine fell out when i brushed up against the cable. But as im using two of these simply for backups, for 20 bucks, each no better value. I would NOT use this as a main drive enclosure, used every day though.....

I had some problems getting it to work with my VISTA Operating System but after a re-read of the directions it booted up, VISTA found it and it worked flawlessly. (pay close attention to the direction sheet, it bounces you around a lot) I used a leftover 40 gig WD hard drive and run my backup to it.

I'm getting another one because I had a problem with the $20 Coolmax enclosure. This drive does work with NTFS format. The screws that hold the drive are solid. You don't need them, if your hot swaping. The screws can be covered up with inserts (included). Worth the price.

For the price of the case, it does exactly what you need it to do. As far as the review that states you need a FAT32 format -- this is untrue. Worked perfectly with my NTFS formatted drive.

Maybe Im just lucky, but Ive never had any problems with Sabrent enclosures; no explosions; no fires; never attracted flies. Sounds like the people who complain about external enclosures are actually having problems with their computer, not the enclosures. Good item, good price, incredibly fast shipping!

For only $20 you can't beat the value for the price. Old comp fried on me and this made sure i didn't lose the info on the old hdd. I like that there is the on/off switch so it isn't just spinning you hdd all the time. Only con would be the 6.5 foot power cord. A little short for my needs on my laptop but if you are on a regular desk then it would be fine.

I guess its good for the money, but until its totally put together its feels like a fabriche egg. External power supply is kinda lame, I have another external that doesnt need one, odd. I also bought 2 and one was DOA and falling apart. New one is on its why, praying for a working one.

This unit has great promise but poor execution. I got mine for very limited use of backing up video files from my notebook while working on a project. I put a 100 GB EIDE hard drive in it and it worked fine, the first time. Copied some files and that was it. Tried to use it 2 weeks later and XP would not recognize it. Reading other reviews, I switched to to CS (it did work set to Master) and XP would not even give the ''not recognized'' error message. Several combinations with reboots and an hour later I gave up. Other USB devices work fine. Great idea but quality control seems to be lacking.

So easy, a Neanderthal could do it. I purchased two enclosures for two hard drives I had laying around when my old desktop went to the great cyber beyond. Tiger Direct shipped them out and I had them in three days (thought it would take 8 days) I had my old HDs up and running in 5 minutes. The speed surprised me... very fast, considering they're USB. Other people speak of heat build-up, but, I haven't noticed it. Then again, I'm not using them as primaries, just file storage and retrieval. All in all, I'm very satisfied.

Its Kinda low on the features, and mounting took me a minute to figure out I had to slide off the sides. There is no cooling so your drive will get hot, but apart from that its great nice transfer, no installation and since it is not bus powered its wonderful unlike my WD passport that can't get enough power.

Purchased 2 of these to swap drives for backup. worked great until one day the power supply just died after about 6 months of use. I swapped out the other power supply and that one died 4 months later. Oh well!

I bought this when I bought a new 500g harddrive. I have had no problems with it so far put a 120g in it partition into 2 drives. Plug it in and turn it on and my Windoxs XP Home SP 2, finds it no problems at all.

I've been fighting with this thing for hours and I can't get it to work with my system. Windows XP Pro SP2. WD 80GB and WD 120GB drives, both known working drives, are doing the exact same thing. I tried hard drive jumpers on Single, Master, Slave and Cable Select. The drive is recognized by Windows, but I can't get a drive letter and it makes Device Manager and Disk Management freeze. As soon as I switch the power off on the enclosure, all the windows open that would not do so with the unit powered up. I've got a brand new Ultra 4-port USB 2.0 card installed which works great with every other device that I plug into it. This enclosure just plain refuses to work. Can't return to TD. Dealing with a Chinese company is a nightmare. This thing is going into the trash can and I guess I'll just write it off as a bad choice. The next one will be a name brand that I can trust.

unable to even get the drive into the enclosure! it is VERY poorly designed inside. the IDE connector, due to the geometrey, couldn't even be hooked up to the drive, with the enclosure closed!

Unit failed completely just after warrantee period. I threw it in the trash and put the hard drive in another enclosure made by a different manufacturer. Now I have an external hard drive that works fine.

The product works fine so far. I purchased the enclosure to pull files off of a hard drive that was in a computer that crashed. The drive was not recognized (no drive letter was assigned) but I believe the problem is that the drive was formatted in NTFS and had multiple partitions. A single partition NTFS drive was recognized. A FAT32 multiple partition drive only had a drive letter assigned to the first partition. Even with these limitations the enclosure is a good value.

This thing is great. I wish it got its power via the usb connection as opposed to having to plug it into the wall, but hey...It's construction is solid, and it performs flawlessly. What more can you ask?

Works great for what you need it to. My only problem with it was the instructions said to put the drive to MASTER jumper setting. It wouldn't recognize it unless it is on Cable select. I also like the fact that you have a power switch on the unit.

I've had 2 Sabrent external hard drive power supplies burn out with only a couple hundred hours use. They also run very hot. Don't waste your money.

I purchased this item to recover some data from the HD of an older computer that crapped out on me this spring. The most difficult part was assembling the unit physically. The cables were a bit of a tight fit; there were also two different sizes of screws that looked similar at first glance. I don't know why the back comes off, all connections are at the front. Once it was together my new system recognized it right away. I find the case becomes a little warm after running for a while but not HOT, of course that may depend on what drive you put inside. Anyway, it is simple enough to switch on or off on the fly. I have installed an ata 100 drive with about 12-13 GB of data; at switch on, the system takes about 45 seconds to read the file table then it's good to go. The unit is connected to a USB 1.1 port and I have been able to play descent resolution MPEGs directly from the external disk. Haven't tried to run any apps from it though. Good value for simple external storage or back-up.
