Consumer support is superb When idle temp stays constant 46C which is not good. in Basement cool atmosphere connected to an open personal computer with no case. Concern is if the temp stays this high in open what will come about when this drive will be inside the case. temp is a huge concern with WD, which is an identical situation with WD drives Will stay away from WD drives. favor samsung drives maintains good temp . sound doesn't bother me. dehumidifier is humming behind me in basement, so employed to it.

The cost was suitable for the size and speed of the drive. I bought this HD much less than a year ago. I was making use of it to backup my main drive using Acronis TrueImage. Great capacity, reasonably affordable I am now in the procedure of RMA with WD on the 5th of these drives. In all cases they perform wonderful at the starting but somewhere in between 6 months and 15 months they start to encounter Read/Write troubles. I have had many that will no longer read and had other individuals fail to write. I have began to replace the WD drives with Hitachi IDE drives and so far am content with that selection. I have read posts that indicate that WD knows there is a firmware matter with this size IDE drive but given that they are swiftly becoming dinosaurs WD won't invest the funds to matter new firmware. On this last RMA it took WD more than a month and three telephone calls to ship the RMA replacement drive. What is a shame is I have applied WD HDDs exclusively for the last 9 tyears and in no way a issue with something other than these 500GB IDE models

I thought that it being a 16mb buffer and such it would be greater and faster. Not so!!! Just got my order yesterday. Ordered two of these WD Blue 500GB's and first one opened DOA! Second one the Motherboard will only see it half the time. Had to give it far more time to boot up before MOBO would see it (like it was a Substantially older drive). WD Diag Tools wouldn't even recognize it! Diag tools said it wasn't a WD drive. That's when I pulled the plug on the concept of wanting either of these even replaced. What's the chances of purchasing two 500gb HDD's and 1 1.5TB Black 64mb cache HDD (read my other evaluation) and all of them being defective all in the same order!!! When the second drive did work. I tried coping a small more than 200 gigs to it. I set it copying yesterday at 6pm and at 9am this morning it was nonetheless less then half done?!?!?!!! What the heck! I have two WD 500Gb JB's that are A lot quicker and have been running for years with out ANY complications!The only reason I'm giving this 1 egg is simply because it's not Newegg's fault. There RMA support has been awesome! I just wished that I didn't have to send drives back and have the turn about time I'm now faced with.
