Changed firmware to Tomato. Performs great. It has worked flawlessly with no drop outs or resets. Great router. Did not attempt it with the ASUS firmware. Connected portable hard drive, but could under no circumstances get the printer to function from the USB making use of Tomato. None

Tried DDWRT and Olegs, worked stable. Asus firmware desires some much more perform. 1019 is seriously buggy. 'wrong static or dynamic ip' error with 1019 all the time. I use Linksys modem. It is achievable that this router does not like my linksys modem third celebration firmware is stable but tough to make the usb function properly unless you devote sufficient time and effort. I purchased this router mostly for the FTP server with out a static ip and media server. So I have to go back to asus firmware for the simplicity of confguration. I located several others also have the 'wrong static or dynamic ip' dilemma. Don't blame your modem or your ISP such as comcast (although I hate it), it is the firmware challenge. I went back to the 1014 and everything works fine so far Ƒ week or so). For media server I only got 5M/s transfer price so far, appears slow. Once it is stable, not a poor router.

I bought this router because it has a lot of ram, is dd-wrt capable (as well as tomato capable, etc.), and has 2 usb 2.0 ports. I installed the Tomato Firmware (the teddy_bear version with USB support) on this router with relative ease. So far, I have attached 1 external hard drive to the router and used it as a network drive; it works really well. From my brief use of the Asus firmware on routher, I found it lacking a lot of features as well as ugly.

four x Gigabit Ethernet, 2 x USB ports, excellent range, fast proc speed and ample hardware. Appears clean and modern. Economical (I got for about ๥ on unique). Installing DD-WRT turns this router into a fairly rad and muscular, complete-featured beast. ASUS Firmware *really* sucks. It was dropping my connection each and every couple of hours and also losing its connection to my ISP. If you don't want to spend the time replacing the firmware with the DD-WRT firmware, do not waste your time with this router. If you do, you'll require this:http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N16#Installation_:

Amazing tech specs. Good wireless range. Ran genuinely, actually hot, started dropping my Steam connection just about every 30 minutes. PITA. Was working with a laptop cooler to get temps back down. I employed this to replace an N-12 and now I'm back running the N-12

Gigabit ports, Wireless N, 2x USB, ample on board flash/memory, removable antennas, DD-WRT supported, superior processor. Steady and silent.DD-WRT is the explanation to get this router, it runs it really rather well. Not dual-band if that matters to you.If you're not going to get into the DD-WRT aspects this router can provide for you, there are cheaper solutions that will do what you want. If you're not a tinker'er this router isn't for you. I bought this router particularly to run DD-WRT, which it does exceptionally properly. Initial flash is accomplished with a specialized make, then a further re-flash with the mega build and you're prepared to do anything a router should/could/might want to do.It's running a VPN server, SSH server, internet server, and FTP for me best now. I'm sooner or later going to add a printer and a second DD-WRT bridge-repeater.You can throw anything at this router and it keeps on chugging. No complaints other than I wanted also extended to replace my old router.

ASUS RT-N16 4 Port Gigabit Wireless N Router with 2X USB 2.0 Ports
Comment:
Installed Tomato USB before even connecting it to the WAN port of my modem. Following finding that set-up, used the 2 usb ports for an external really hard drive and a network printer. Following the instructions from tomato usb's web site, the setup was quite smooth. Spec-wise this router leaves small to be desired but be conscious that no matter which firmware you use (asus or 3rd-celebration), don't expect external harddrive speeds to be all that wonderful. I'm getting about 2-7 MBytes/sec with most of the transfer executing at about 3 MB/s and a tiny burst at the begin of a transfer up to 7MB/s for about three seconds. Not the finish of the world but if you're networking a couple of computers with each other and you're going to be sharing files then you're superior off moving the files off the external harddrive and placing them directly on one of the computer systems that will be in the network (if free of charge space allows for it) mainly because wireless N transfer speeds will be about 8-11MB/s. If you only have n devices that will hyperlink to this router then set the broadcast type to n-only. Otherwise, transfer speeds will not be reliably higher and may well (probably will) jump about and typically be reduce than what you'd expect. Usually be aware of any cell-phone (looking at you, iPhone) that is set up to automatically connect to a home wireless network. If the telephone is connecting and only has a g-typical adapter constructed in then this router is going to be severely throttled. Other than that, no true concerns with this router. Incredibly delighted.

I mainly purchased this router for its speed, and to replace my aging 10럼 wireless-G Tomato-based router. It runs wicked fast and is rock strong with Tomato installed on it. I couldn't be happier. I couldn't figure out how to forward ports on the default firmware; default firmware web UI was also slow and in my opinon, not nicely organized.

This is hands down 1 of the finest routers I've ever purchased. For the price you get 4 port gigabit, 2 usb networked devices, wireless-N. The clock speed and ram are fairly outstanding compared to prior routers that I've owned. I switched to this model from a attempted and true wrt54gl and the distinction is substantial. Even the dd-wrt net interface loads more rapidly. I can't get more than the capabilities you get for this price tag. Folks like to complain about the need to load custom firmware on. It's not that difficult and properly worth it. The cause it doesn't ship with it is possibly due to licensing issues. Custom firmware is a have to. DD-Wrt does a fantastic job and operates excellent on this router. What a excellent deal.

Putting in dd-wrt was like butter and makes this router a great small nas. The wireless range seem fantastic I have no challenge attaching to it anyplace in my house with my phone and laptop. Speed is also greater then my old linksys wrt54g and the wired speed is fantastic. The Power provide on this thing was junk out of the box and created it so unstable it would not remain on-line. I guess that's why it was an open box particular. I had a greater excellent PS and replaced the broken 1 seems to be stable now. With some analysis I've found a couple of people today have had the PS problem so beware.

This component is fantastic- but every handful of days, the wireless connection disappears or becomes unusable, requiring a reboot. Just came from a WRT54GL (w/ Tomato), looks like I will be going back to it. First time I've ever had such a important dilemma with anything from ASUS.

ASUS RT-N16 4 Port Gigabit Wireless N Router with 2X USB 2.0 Ports
Cons:- Firmware- USB Speed- Maximum 65 Mpbs speed

Pros:- Construction
Comment:
Upgraded to latest Asus firmware, could not get anything above 65 mpbs connection speed. Flashed with EasyTomato, DD-WRT and maximum link speed stayed at 65 mpbs (reported by the router). USB File transfer limited to about 3 MB/sec. Very poor. Upon closer analysis, I found out under tomato that around 60 Mbps, the CPU usage stays at 100%. Considering it uses a 480 Mhz processor, the speed is unacceptable regardless of which firmware you use (DD-WRT/Tomato/Stock). Just google Asus 16N Tomato USB slow and you will get tons of results on Tomato forum from people having the same issue as described above.

This router comes with really great hardware for the value. It has all the factors you could feasible want in a household router. N speeds are fantastic, wired speeds great as nicely, all the connectivity operates fantastic. The software program that comes with it is more or much less throw away. Putting DD-WRT on is particularly straightforward (even less difficult so than Linksys units) and it truly unlocks the prospective of this router. Once you set up optional software such as Optware for DD-WRT (hammer blockers, anti port scanner, samba, asiablock, etc, etc) you have an exceptional router that would price 跌+ otherwise (if not more). It's a wonderful buy, just make sure you reload it with DD-WRT. Software If you require a router and are at least a bit tech-savvy this is a no brainer.

Best 2.4GHz N router on the market. Limited to 144Mbit/20Hz band width with Apple machines (computer not router limitation).Stock firmware is actually very, very good and extremely stable. Of course the router supports tomatousb, but I would suggest that it is unnecessary (unlike on something like a WRT54GL, where Tomato is significantly better).

Nicely-constructed hardware, rock-solid reliabilityGood coverage throughout my 1800sq ft flatAbility to take third-celebration firmware (Tomato) Shame it doesn't ship with Tomato from the start out I loaded up Tomato USB 1.28 appropriate from the begin, as other folks wrote that the basic firmware isn't worth attempting. Fantastic news although, the Tomato firmware is great, tons of valuable functionality & settings. Greatest of all, it's been up for 23 days solid now, which is about 21 days longer than my prior D-Hyperlink DIR-655 could ever manage, no matter what company-supplied firmware I tried. Very best of all, its firmware model supports at least a couple of open source alternatives, so you have the greatest of all worlds here.

Running this with Tomato USB 1.28 ( I installed with the two step DD-WRT mini to Tomato approach. Don't forget the clearing of the nvram.) and I am blown away by the performance. I "upgraded" from a D-Link DIR-655 (also an exceptional router) because I wanted to tinker with third celebration firmware, the specs are excellent and I like the printer server and media server functions.I have a wireless desktop two rooms away and I am getting a 270 Mbps connection! (the D-Link gave me a 130 Mbps on the very same machine). Netflix streams more rapidly by means of my wireless LG Blueray player. (buffer fills faster. HD films are now often HD) The Asus firmware has a quite easy to use interface but performance with it is quite disappointing. My wireless connection to the identical desktop would wobble in between 45 and 75) Even wired connections would run rapid and slow. I attempted the stock 1..1.6 and also the most up-to-date 1..1.9. Also, it is quite difficult to set up the printer function. I was ultimately capable to do it following substantially trial and error. Setting up the portable HD and the printer in Tomato was easy. Adding the printer to the perform stations was not. I ultimately discovered a guide as to how to do it (local IP port). The one advantage of the Asus firmware more than Tomato is that the Asus firmware sets up a vitual USB port which enables complete multi-function abilty with the printer. With Tomato, the port is not recognized as a USB connection on the workstation so it was impossible to use the scanner or card reader. Only the printer driver installs.

Cons:Not many. Firewall is not as intuitive as on previous routers. Not a lot of space around the USB ports so beware those fatter USB plugs.

Pros:Easy to use. Upgradeable for either Asus or Tomato firmware. The latest Asus F/W has much better features and works well.Meets all my requirements.
Comment:
Comes with V1 firmware. Easily upgraded it to latest Tomato where BT Transmission works. Could login using Putty and use the NAS, but could not get USB share to appear on Windows 7 network. Have seen other reports of this issue on Tomato. Then upgraded to latest Asus firmware V3 and it is MUCH SUPERIOR to V1 and does everything I want. A USB stick is limited to ~2.5Mbps write speed although read is plenty fast. Added a 2.5" hard drive powered off USB port and no speed issues to the USB NAS. NTFS formatting on the NAS. BT or Usenet NZB downloads saturate my Internet at 5Mbps writing to the NAS. It has a bandwidth monitor that works well. USB NAS share is very simple and works on Windows network. Copying to my PC is at 55Mbps over wired connection.Asus f/w does Bit Torrent and Usenet NZB downloads very well which is why I bought it. Also does aMule but I don't use it. In Asus V3 f/w download clients are on the router so don't need the Download Master PC client that was needed in V1.No problems with wireless. Using both g and n performance is much better when set to Legacy. Hung it off the back of my desk antennas pointed downward against the wall and no problems anywhere in the house.Haven't figured out the firewall yet which is not as easy to configure as on other routers. Disconnect/reconnect USB drive sometimes needs a reboot and once a power cycle, but it works great once set up correctly. Haven't needed or tried the QoS bandwidth control but it looks OK. No power switch on it. Haven't tried the WPS although the button for it is on the back and it would be much easier to use if it was on the front. Not using the print server. I used that on my Asus 520GL and it worked great so I'm assuming no issues on the RT-N16.It has a tablet app (Android and iPad) for remote control but I don't have a tablet to try it. I like that Asus is trying to make this integrate into a larger ecosystem than just a generic wireless router and their latest firmware really supports that vision.Summary: Very happy. Would buy again. Great Tomato firmware support but staying with latest Asus f/w which is very good and very easy for non-Unix people. Really like offloading Torrents and Usenet from PC to the RT-N16. Impressive performance and options at a good price.
