*excellent 300mbps 2.5ghz N performance*Capabilities of a 跌-400 router when reflashed with 3rd party firmware, such as TomatoUSB.*Superior processor and significant amount of memory enables the installation of a plethora of optware for a crazy quantity of extended capabilities.*gigabit lan*excellent range with three external antennas *Stock firmware works but can be unstable. INSTALL TomatoUSB firmware!*If only it had been dual band with 5Ghz... Your neighbors will hate you not only since you have insane efficiency compared to their wifi setup, but due to the fact their b/g devices will succumb from your N network hogging up the two.five spectrum and jamming their signals =P

Loaded dd-wrt on this router with no dilemma and its been running solid since! Decent performance and range with my mixed g and n customers. I would highly recommend this router. None At 1st I believed I was doing something wrong in the dd-wrt manage panel simply because my wireless n throughput was 150 mbps. I realized my n draft laptop only supports up to 150 mbps.

This router will do anything you ask of it... supplied you have the technical know-how or the willingness to discover. If you want to plug it in and go you will be sorely disappointed. Acquire this for the hardware and then go grab some totally free firmware from the net. If you truly want to get into it grab some antenna. Basic firmware is not worth your timeTomato is extremely customizable and has dozens and dozens of selections you could not want to tinker with if you're a standard user. Get Tomato VPN... comes with usb support too.

Installing DD-WRT was a snap. Ive utilized it on three distinct routers and this one was by far the easiest. So far totally stable and the range is amazing. Had several devices attempting to bog this factor down and it doesn't even flinch. None so far. Only factor I can feel of is that it doesn't match my entertainment center...lol For the income, and DD-wrt support, 1 of the greatest deals out there.

Bought this to replace Netgear WNDR3700 4 Port Gigabit Wireless N Dual Band Router that couldn't hold a connection longer than 24 hours.Tried latest DD-WRT firmware on the ASUS, no problems with flash or upgrade, but LAN was not cooperating with my desktop for reasons I do not understand (I yam noob to DD-WRT). Reverted to latest ASUS firmware, and cannot understand why any standard user would be unhappy. Haven't had to reset it yet (unlike 1-2x a day for the WNDR3700). Lack of parental controls in GUI the only potential shortcoming for some authoritarian users/admins, but maybe a second kick at open-source firmware will fix that.A bit bulky, lots of blue LEDs, but I am happy with the purchase.

Amazing hardwareExtremely quickly. Uncomplicated to configure.DD-WRT support.Stable so far and between laptops, cell phones, wii, dsi, tv, dvd player I get additional than 10 connected clients.Nice range; covers the whole residence. Media server is not DLNA compliant, my Sony Tv cannot connect to it. Worked with Tomato so not worth taking a full egg off. Comparing this with my old five Buffalo Airstation it is a lot faster for wireless N compatible devices. I use the old router as a repeater to increase signal but hardly necessary.

Very best router I've ever had when you put DD-WRT on it. No challenge keeping 200 connection open in utorrent. 3 weeks and zero lock ups with DD-WRT. I have not tried the USB functions. Worthless on stock firmware as it tends to lock up. Don't buy it unless you plan to put DDWRT on it.

ASUS RT-N16 4 Port Gigabit Wireless N Router with 2X USB 2.0 Ports
Cons:slow network transfer speed to USB devices

Pros:works great, can flash to custom firmware
Comment:
This is a great piece of hardware, and if you take it one more step by flashing it to TomatoUSB or some other alternative firmware it will run great software too. I've had this running sabnzbd+, a torrent client, an openvpn sever, a socks proxy, squid, and a print server. It worked fine at all of these. My only issue with it is that writing / reading from a USB device attached to it is quite slow (even without all the above services) and as a result I've stopped attaching storage to it.

ASUS RT-N16 4 Port Gigabit Wireless N Router with 2X USB 2.0 Ports
Cons:Stock firmware is terrible. Tomato is required to truly unleash this router's power

Pros:Very fast, GB ethernet, great range, USB ports for printers and storage. 2 Year Warranty. Incredibly reliable using Tomato firmware. External antennaes make it very versitile.
Comment:
I used the Asus firmware for about 10 seconds. It is clunky, unintuitive and not terribly reliable. With Tomato however, this router really performs. I have seen this router operate with over 200 wifi connections at a Condo unit I maintain and while it isn't always that busy, it has NEVER needed a reboot. I have 4 access points connected to it serving 50 residential units. Everything is on a UPS so it gets no bumps (highly recommended) and it just works. I have sold at least 20 of these units and I have never had one back. Asus quality and a great warranty make this router hard to beat.

Wireless NGigabit Ethernettwo USB Ports Quite unstable Unless you really want to fiddle with you router firmware and have the time to do it I don't suggest it.I didn't have the time so I ended up returning it and acquiring a Netgear that is a dream out of the box and you still can alter firmware when you have time, not due to the fact is required out of the box.

I didn't use at all the stock firmware but to flash it to DD WRT.It gives decent options for a consumer grade router. Vlans, basic bandwidth monitoring..I did not have to reset it once up to now.The wireless range is quite good even through walls and floors. This is a big step forward of my previous Linksys WRT54G..

Great 802.11n router that is compatible with custom firmware. I personally use TomatoUSB and have not had to restart the router since the day I started using it unless it was to tweak the settings to my liking. I experience zero disconnections and am able to get a solid signal through multiple walls and down one floor.

ASUS RT-N16 4 Port Gigabit Wireless N Router with 2X USB 2.0 Ports
Cons:Weird Stock Firmware, Annoying rebate, disturbing slowness during dd-wrt setup. No 5GHz support.

Pros:Gigabit, 802.11n, Great DD-WRT compatibility, very fair price.
Comment:
I bought this router because it was a good, reasonably priced option that suppored 802.11n, gigabit, and was advertised as supporting DD-WRT.In all of these areas, I'm not disappointed. The router has been a solid router for running DD-WRT, and supporting almost all of the features in the big or mega dd-wrt firmware packages.I found the stock firmware a little weird, but it might work well for beginners. It directs users through to some kind of login portal when they try to access websites at first, and I'm not entirely sure why - it's a bit like what a wireless hotspot would normally do. Frankly, I didn't spend much time with it, since I much prefer DD-WRT, and it was fairly straightforward to flash to that firmware. It has worked okay, other than a few weird times when setting it up and it was taking forever to respond, but once I started using the router normally, it has worked great. The only other thing I could really have hoped for was 5Ghz and simultaneous dual-band support, but that's a lot to expect for a router in this price range.

- Powerful Processor - Haven't overloaded it as soon as- Use USB tough drive for network storage - not fantastic throughput (because of USB) but it works reliably - rapidly sufficient to stream 1080 movies- Rock solid - 100% uptime with Tomato firmware - ASUS firmware is weak - nevertheless they developed this router for open source- Runs hot, so don't stuff it in in between stuff, let it breath I have tried DDWRT and Tomato firmware on this device, and Tomato is hands down much more stable at this point in time.

Comment:
Have been researching for over 10 months. Was going with one more brand originally based on the fact that I had a excellent working ancient version of it (wireless B). Decided to move up to Wireless N. The firmware is aweful. Immediately after everything I have read about it, I wanted to see for myself why the firmware was getting trashed in these forums so much. Didn't take long to see what a lot of men and women were complaining about.Ripping out the stock firmware need to be the 1st thing you do. The stock firmware is just a filler, so that the consumer can replace it with actual working firmware like TomatoVPN or TomatoUSB. The manufacturer can't seriously ship with Tomato firmware on it I would assume, so they have to make it usable, which it's not, unless you put on Tomato firmware.

You should only buy this router for one reason: to flash with Tomato. For me, it replaced a full-on Linux PC server.Tomato supports Optware packages, so, with 32Mb ROM and 128 RAM, and a ~500Mhz CPU, this beast is running a web server (lighttpd) with PHP remote file manager over SSL, VPN server, SFTP server, internal SAMBA server (i.e., plug in a $50 USB HD and this thing doubles as a Gbit NAS), SSH server, and an Asterix server with out a slow down. Oh, and it never crashes. All for $90. Can you say unbelievable???Here's the site with HOW-TOs for this particular firmware:http://tomatousb.org/

First thing I did was replace the firmware with DD-WRT.I had the older Linksys WRT54G with the Tomato firmware which was all good and fine. But I need Gigabit for transfers between computers and wireless N as with G barely reception in the basement. So this router fits the bill as it's firmware is replaceable as I don't like any stock router firmware.Anyway, works great!

If you have a old WRT54GL router running 3rd party like DD-WRT or tomato and your looking to upgrade to 802.11n the Asus RT-16N is it. This router is a beast when teamed up with Tomato USB. I have 2 wifi n devices, 3 computers on lan and a printer and a 500GB NAS running off the 2 USB ports with no lag/slow downs. This is the best router I have every owned hands down and I recommend to anyone who likes 3rd party firmwares like Tomato/DD-WRT. When on sale this thing is a steal of a deal!!
