ASUS RT-N16 4 Port Gigabit Wireless N Router with 2X USB 2.0 Ports
Cons: - UNRELIABLE (spontaneously reboots)- Unusable stock firmware- Wireless connectivity problems (tip: pick G or N, stick with it)

Pros: Powerful hardware specs. Was the best home router I had feature & performance wise while running it with Tomato firmware - while it lasted.
Comment:
NCIX STAFF: I would like to give this a 1 star rating, but the form won't let me - you are required to enter an order ID, which is not on my receipt: picked this up as walk-in May 29, 2010 in Burnaby. NCIX Invoice# 3879966 Slip#66153913ON TO THE REVIEW:This is an example of Asus being occasional Asses. The router is loaded with features, sells at a very competitive price, and looks absolutely marvelous on paper. The caveat is that the hardware is made cheaply and you are in for never-ending problems with router spontaneously rebooting itself. This may go somewhat unnoticed for most consumers, but it will cause you things like annoying VPN disconnections, and in many cases you will have unexpected hiccups streaming youtube or Netflix.I have run my unit with both the latest ASUS firmware and with Tomato USB. Just as other reviewers point out, Tomato improves things a lot, but the router still randomly resets with nothing in the logs.I am not a single sqeaky wheel customer with a lemon unit. Look up "rt-n16 reboots", "rt-n16 slow", and you will see the pattern of these devices failing after several months of use.To add insult to injury, I noticed that Asus have silently removed the "wireless" section from their forums, probably in an effort to keep a lid on on all the disgruntled users that come back after their honeymoon with the product is over.

havent had any major issues with it yet. plug and play. gave me a bit of issues when i started playing with the settings (probably just my fault). Pluged my printer into its usb, didn't give me any issues, didn't need to install anything, printed properly just like when it was pluged into my computer

Cons: -stock firmware-not dual band

Pros: -awesome 3rd party support ie. tomato-amazing range with 3 antennas-printer server, NAS, DLNA support-2 usb ports-2 year warranty
Comment:
I upgraded from a linksys wrt120n router as i was getting lots of disconnection when under stress from downloading/torrenting. Went with the RT-n16 as i just love tomato's simple interface and customizable. I run a samsung usb laser printer and a external hdd usb and it works awesome.if you love 3rd party support - get the rt-n16!

ASUS RT-N16 4 Port Gigabit Wireless N Router with 2X USB 2.0 Ports
Cons: horrific stock firmware

Pros: excellent hardware specs, possibly the best consumer router hardware on the market
Comment:
This was the biggest PITA to set up, period. I've heard about the bad Asus firmware and thought it was a little over exaggerated. It's hugely understated in this case. Asus firmware updates basically just fix one bug and create  another bug. For example with the stock firmware, the router couldn't connect to any DNS what so ever, so you'd have to type in the IP address of the site or you couldn't connect to the internet. Flashing to the latest firmware fixed the problem, but the DHCP was a little buggy after the flash. It doesn't always request an IP from my ISP, it wasn't a huge problem as I would only need to assign one myself every time I reset my modem. (which I almost never do)Flashing to a 3rd party firmware like Tomato makes the router a LOT better, but you lose Asus features like the WPS button/USB. I decided to stick with the latest Asus firmware as it was the least buggy and I didn't have to sacrifice proprietary features. It simply does not make sense for an average consumer buying a consumer grade router to purchase this. Nothing works properly out of the box, the consumer must either use 3rd party firmware or spend hours configuring the stock firmware to work properly. It doesn't matter how good the hardware is, most consumer won't even make use of it, not to mention you can't make use of it with the horrible firmware. However, if you're experienced with networking and don't mind voiding your warranty, this router isn't a bad choice. It has more RAM and a CPU faster than pretty much all of the other routers under $200, with the right software it makes a pretty powerful router. However, most experienced network techs would probably be building their own router box with a Linux distro designed for enterprise grade routers.Bottom line it works after a lot of tweaking, but I would NOT buy this again, or recommend it to anyone else looking for a consumer level router. After flashing it with dd wrt, worked excellently. My area has some sort of interference, which causes any router I get to be slower then usual, compared to all my others, this one is doing far better.

ASUS RT-N16 4 Port Gigabit Wireless N Router with 2X USB 2.0 Ports
Cons: Setup

Pros: Stability, RAM
Comment:
Setup was a real pain, stock firmware didn't work (think this is a recurring theme with my Asus purchased products). Took me about an hour or two connecting my computer directly to the router and then disconnecting and directly connecting my computer to the internet to try and figure out what was wrong. Decided to say screw it and install 3rd party tomato firmware. Installation of that firmware wasn't super straightforward since how-to guides weren't great.Slight problem with connection to PS3 disconnecting which I didn't have with my old WRT54G which was also flashed to tomato. From my limited use of the router for the past 2 weeks, seems powerful and quite stable (after flashing to tomato).

ASUS RT-N16 4 Port Gigabit Wireless N Router with 2X USB 2.0 Ports
Cons: -Size? (it's big)

Pros: -CPU Power-RAM-Gigabit ports-Price
Comment:
I think I've found my new WRT54GL. This router works fine with Tomato and DD-WRT - I've got it running on Tomato, and it's handling all the QOS rules that I toss at it quite beautifully. My connection feels snappier with it - probably mostly due to the faster CPU.The Gigabit LAN ports are great, since I do have a NAS, and it was feeling quite slow on 100mbit.I haven't used the USB ports for anything, but apparently it can share drives and printers. Neat, but that's the job of my NAS.Wireless signal strength is good. I've got the transmit power set lower than normal, but it's still stronger than my WRT54GL, even when I'm upstairs.Very happy with this overall. Well worth the price.

Cons: - Crappy stock firmware- Bright LEDs that shine through the vent grates- Thick and big compared to other routers- Doesn't come with and upright stand

Pros: - Capable of having 3rd party firmware (DD-WRT, Tomato)- USB ports- lots of RAM- Can somewhat stand upright without a stand
Comment:
I bought this router because it has a lot of ram, is dd-wrt capable (as well as tomato capable, etc.), and has 2 usb 2.0 ports. I installed the Tomato Firmware (the teddy_bear version with USB support) on this router with relative ease. So far, I have attached 1 external hard drive to the router and used it as a network drive; it works really well. From my brief use of the Asus firmware on routher, I found it lacking a lot of features as well as ugly.

My previous router was an Dlink WBR2310. I had to reset it daily and got many many dropped connections when more than 2 people were using the internet. With this router I have yet to restart it, and now it doesn't seem to matter how many clients are connected to it, it just works. BTW I'm using the FW that the router shipped with (I know DD-WRT is out for this router but the router is already rock solid for my needs, why change that?) I am yet to try out USB storage and printer options, but plan to in the future.

ASUS RT-N16 4 Port Gigabit Wireless N Router with 2X USB 2.0 Ports
Cons: -Range-Occasional connection drops

Pros: -128mb of ram-Decent Processor-Price-Works with DD-WRT
Comment:
I expected so much from this router as they packed it with so much power... Little did I notice that this power would rarely be needed. I am pressed to use more than 18 mb of the 128 mb of ram no matter how many torrents im downloading. The range wasnt as good as the D-Link DIR-655 I had. Otherwise the speed is more than acceptable. Also one note... although it is compatible with DD-WRT, there is only a beta of DD-WRT that works for the router. I expected the world but got a typical consumer grade router. Would I buy it again, yes, but only because its cheaper than the D-Link extremes.

I bought this product for its feature set namely 2 usb and gigabit Lan connection. The few problems that I do have are with the Firmware and Ping issues. Normally I don't have problems with computers and software but this router is a pain in the iss! Slow connections to the internet, ping hovered around 670 ms no matter what I tried to fix it. Asus web site/support is useless. Unit shipped with 1.0.2 firmware flashed it to the latest 1.xx.7 still had problems. I gave up on the product so I flashed it with a third party firmware . ALL my problems have gone away. Remove the crappy software that Asus provides and this router becomes very good

It has been almost 3 months since i bought this router in late May. I'm happy to say this is a nice router with good features under $90(PM and sale price).I'm still using the Asus firmware 1012(some said it's the most stable asus FW). It's good enough to our small home network(1 wired 2 wireless all behind N16). Many ppl switched to other FW and most are happy with it. My only gripe is this router's download speed may drop  after a few weeks. Sometimes i just hit the reboot button. sometimes i did this:1. Turn off all pc's and devices connected to the router.2. Unplug power to the router3. Unplug power to the modem4 Wait 30 seconds5. plug in modem and let it fully sync6. Plug in router and let it fully sync7. Press reset button on back of router for 30 seconds8. Turn pc back on9. Configue router for wireless security or ppoe connection if your using dsl.Yes, i played a few rounds of Bad company 2 and the speed is the same as connecting directly to the cable modem. no hipcup. FTP works well. I haven't tried the multi printing. For security setup, just set WPA2 personal and pick a strong passwordhttps://www.microsoft.com/protect/fraud/passwords/checker.aspx?WT.mc_id=Site_LinkDo NOT enable MAC filtering or SSID hiding:http://www.zdnet.com/blog/ou/the-six-dumbest-ways-to-secure-a-wireless-lan/43One star off because the speed drop s after a period of time.

Cons: Asus firmware is poor however getting betterSlightly larger than a standard routerSuffers from the usual "LED-itis" most routers have; blue LED's on front are constantly on and shine through top vents and can be distracting at night.

Pros: Extremely versatile in 3rd party firmware available (Tomato, DD-WRT, etc)Three antennae that can be independently positionedHardware is on the upper end for a consumer router (high ram and CPU)USB ports allow for wireless storage
Comment:
Bought this router based on reviews online boasting its solid performance. Instantly put Tomato firmware on it out of box with little trouble; firmware utility errored at 33% but firmware loaded fine. Router performs great under stress and signal is great. Throughput in mixed mode for N rarely boasts >130 Mbps but neither did my DIR-615. Given the price and performance this router is the perfect solution with the biggest downfalls being a need for 3rd party firmware out of box and far too many LED lights.Would buy again.

Cons: Not sure about setting up the printer, etc.

Pros: DD-WRT CompatibleGood signal strength
Comment:
Well, I used DD-WRT on this as well, without ever trying the Asus firmware. It seemed like it would have been adequate, but everyone seemed to feel that it would do much better with the DD-WRT. So far, signal strength has been pretty good, with no drops. 70 feet away through a couple walls I've lost signal a couple of times, but it still blows away wireless-g. I haven't tried setting up the printer/file stuff yet, and I'm not sure I need to. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it.

Cons: -Not the nicest design, but it's acceptable-The USB printer part has given me some trouble, can't seem to get it working using DD-WRT, stock firmware might work-Not dual channel

Pros: -Powerful & Consistent signal strength-No drops so far-Double the ram of linksys' best router which coss more than double-DD-WRT Compatible
Comment:
I bought this router instead of the linksys WRT610N because I didn't need dual channel and it has double the memory of it as well. It also costs MUCH less and the reviews were proving it to be overall better. I am very satisfied with this router, it does for some reason ocasionally lag on games but overall it's very fast and reliable. I would recommend this to anyone over D-Link and Linksys.

I'm giving it only 3 stars due to it's crummy stock firmware. The stock firmware's QOS settings are did not work well at all. Go through the hoops and flash it with DD-WRT, though, and it becomes a whole different beast. Now I can game with my main computer without the rest of the network's traffic causing lag spikes.
