Fastest CPU, Most RAM and Flash storage you can uncover in a customer router. 2x USB ports and 3 removable antennas. None I purchased this router especially to use DD-WRT on it. I have not attempted Tomato but but I am in shock at how numerous advanced choices you can tinker with. I have to admit, if you will need a router to plug in and get operating in 2minutes, this router may possibly not be the very best for you. But if you want to spend the time and harness the power of this issue, you will soon understand this is the greatest router you can get your hands on.

Cons:none that i can see

Pros:fast and light weight, easy to use and setup
Comment:
It is a very fast and easy to use/setup router and has a great price. I absolutely love Asus and all of their products and would recommend them to a friend or family member. I bought one but it wouldn't turn on the second day but i suspect it is a flaw in just my unit. I am going to exchange it and hopefully the next one will be fine.

ASUS RT-N16 4 Port Gigabit Wireless N Router with 2X USB 2.0 Ports
Cons:Default firmware is abysmal.

Pros:Dependable, fast, inexpensive (when it goes on sale, which is frequently) and powerful.
Comment:
This router is powerful and fast. The firmware it ships with (1.0.1.9) is awful, but once you upgrade to the latest (3.0.xxx), this is an impressive, feature-rich device. The firmware upgrade process is straightforward: login to your router, go to Administration -> System -> Firmware, follow the link to the ASUS website, download latest firmware, unzip, upload to router. Wait 3 minutes and your router will restart with vastly-improved firmware.Other uses have reported success with DD-WRT and Tomato (I haven't tried), but it is worth trying ASUS firmware first; it may not be as good, but it will also not void your warranty, for whatever that's worth. Why this product is shipped with ancient firmware is beyond me.

480MHz CPU, 128 MB ram, and 32megs of ram for flashing this monster speaks for its self. This router has what it needs to run duel band but Asus has crippled that alternative from the factory. Would of been nice for it come out of the box currently operating dd-wrt but I guess thats portion of the fun. Unbox it and flash it more than to dd-wrt (make sure you flash with 14929 build). Make room for this, its a huge router.

So, I had to send it back and get some thing that worked for me at the time. (the wl-520gu) I like it, and I'll get yet another when I require a single.I assume this is the wireless n, gigabit, dd-wrt replacement for the wl-500gp v2 at some point

No trouble acquiring the router configured to service a little household network with three PCs and a couple wireless devices. Worked with out drama for about 2 months Following about 2 months the router fully died - all LEDs have gone out. I tested the power brick which is still outputting 12V so I know that the difficulty is in the router itself. I didn't do something stupid that would have overheated the router. I'm attempting correct now to navigate ASUS's website to submit a warranty claim, but it seems like networking gear is an afterthought to them so I'm not optimistic that I will get anywhere. I suspect the challenge is a low-cost capacitor in the power supply that blew but I'm not going to attempt and open it up until the warranty selection has run its course... I will update my review if anything modifications.

Quickly! Streaming video, stored on attached USB storage, from one particular end of the residence to the other devoid of hiccups. Powerful signal and the wireless under no circumstances drops out. Transfer rates between wired customers are scrumptious. Hardware is robust, plentiful and has under no circumstances come close to failing me but.Effortless to flash! Not poor hunting, either. As has been stated, stock firmware is icky. Otherwise, none! Took me a though to come across a firmware flavor that did what I wanted. I required the xbox to be in a position to see the media on USB storage attached to the router. DD-WRT did not support the proper protocol without a lot of monkeying - but Tomato USB did, and I extremely recommend this firmware! It's extensible and easy to use. Sad to say I went through a handful of flashes and a lot of time on DD-WRT forums ahead of acquiring exactly where I necessary to be. But, I knew it was a project going in, and learned a lot. ;) Purchased two on sale for seventy-a thing just following black friday. Set 'em up identically and gave a single to a buddy with additional demanding media sharing wants. Hasn't failed him either. :)

For the price, I got it for $89, you can't fault this router. I tried dd-wrt, usbtomato and now running it on easytomato, a distro based off of usbtomato, but specifically for this router. On my 25mb/2.5mb connection it just handles all traffic perfect. A few server services on a 2nd i7 xeon system as well. For a budget power router, this thing rocks!

Bought this router to replace my workhorse Linksys for N connectivity. Out of the box it was a dud until I upgraded to the latest v3 firmware. I was planning to switch to dd-wrt right away, but the v3 firmware looked decent. Great router and tons of functions. Has a lot of settings that most routers I have owned in no way had on stock firmware. Simple to flash to 3rd celebration WRT firmwares like tomato and DD-WRT.Tomato USB supports 9000 MTU unlike DD-WRT. the stock firmware and updated versions completely suck. when i run a pretty fancy network here and use NAT forwarding and such this thing was up five min down 15 min and cycled like that. The Dr. Net helper was cool but really was annoying. DD-WRT on it this point only supports 1500 MTU aka ten럼 speeds (read Pros with Tomato USB)This point comes with a 533mhz CPU but its down clocked to a 480mhz this can be fixed by adding heat sinks and a fan and operating 3rd celebration firmware. If your going to have a server or transfer files with this on a regional network your better off making use of Tomato USB firmware. All in all this router is a power home. I use it for a multi-wan link operating Tomato USB and also use it as a nas and a print server in my home and I am incredibly pleased with it.

Bought two of these for public and private network. Flashed with Tomato USB firmware performance has been solid. Asus firmware as well buggy. Do oneself a favour and replace it with open supply Tomato or DD-WRT. I have had concerns with streaming media content type my Windows Residence Server from day one. Troubleshooting led to my router as the issue. Replacing my Cisco Linksys WRT310N with this unit resolved all my WHS difficulties. No far more stutter on HD, no much more lag when browsing my music & Video library. It just works as it must!

So I bought this to replace my WRT54GL and I must say it has performed admirably. Immediately put Tomato FW on it, because let's face it, it's way better than the stock one. Easy setup and the router simply works. It's got more features than I think I'll ever use (VPN, USB, etc). I now have it setup in WDS mode with the old GL and the entire house is blanketed with a very strong Wi-Fi signal. At $90, I can't ask for more.

My purpose for this acquire was to utilize the 2 USB ports for printer sharing and NAS. The wired/wireless speeds were really excellent, even on big downloads. My Brother all in one seemed to have some difficulties staying commented. On the vibrant side, the router worked flawlessly for just around 1 year then the nightmares started. The unit would drop or drastically lower wireless speed and progressively lose wired clientele. I had to do a tricky reset each 24 hours. I could virtually set my watch by it's every day failure. I changed firmware and nevertheless no good results. In frustration, I filed a RMA request. Asus was incredibly prompt in their reply with a RMA number. The router went back this morning. I look forward to seeing if the replacement unit will give me any of the same symptoms. I have replaced the Asus with an old Dlink 614+ and no problems so I know it was not my modem or the Vonage box. Due to the fact I have upgraded to an HP all in 1 with networking capabilities I can say great by to my Brother printer issues

Excellent specs (CPU & RAM)Accepts open supply firmwaresExternal antennas2 USB portsWon't engage in hyperbole. Read the other evaluations. It's as fantastic as they say it is, but you have to use Tomato USB, DD-WRT, or some other open-source third-party firmware. Otherwise, it's like driving a Lamborghini in rush hour on the Cross Bronx Expressway. Waste of time, income, and potential. Stock firmware is as useful as utilized toilet paper. I don't see why they even bother. Asus must just donate to the DD-WRT and Tomato USB projects and fire whoever develops this junk. Do what Buffalo did and get a custom version of great, open source development for their routers.LEDs could be dimmer, but it's not a big deal.5Ghz might be nice, but if I wanted it badly, I would have purchased a Linksys E3000. I wanted two USB ports so I could get a network printer and get SMB/FTP in one particular device. This router's ports reportedly don't supply considerably energy. Flash drives operate fine, although. Powered usb hubs may possibly be a achievable perform around for bus powered tricky drives, but investigate that as I've never tried it. One knock that's recurring in the evaluations is that data transfer is slow if you use a single of the USB ports for a network share or FTP server.Tomato USB reports a CPU load of about 4 when the router is carrying out significant transfers. This indicates the device needs a two.1 Ghz CPU 鹐 Ghz * 4) to retain up with what's becoming thrown at it.My point? The CPU in this router has low-end Pentium 3 speed and most likely has a significantly simpler instruction set. You can't passively cool this device and max it out for USB transfer speeds. In summary:-8MB/s wired, 2MB/s wireless is what you'll get for SMB. If you will need more speed, pony up for a fantastic NAS.-Unless you have a additional than 60mpbs upload speed on your WAN (and you most likely have much less that a tenth of that), this device is great as an FTP server.-Don't blow cash on a 7200rpm USB drive for this; it's a waste. A WD Components or some other slow drive is excellent for these applications.

Good hardware and upgradable with DDWRT. Terrible firmware. Wish it came in Black. As with most reviews, I had to upgrade with DDWRT but I'm familiar with performing that. As yet another reviewer noted about using the correct level firmware as properly. I ran into the exact same issue. I did run into a problem with the wireless being unstable but altering channels cured it even even though I live in the country with other individuals close adequate to interfere. Been rock solid given that then with out a reboot or anything in more than two months.

Cons:Crappy stock firmware, Large unit size. Single-band 2.4ghz.

Pros:Powerful, lots of features, great price. Easily flashed to third-party firmware with ASUS firmware restore. Gigabit LAN. 2 USB ports for file server or print server.
Comment:
Bought this after researching for a while for a new router. Most important point about this router is it requires third-party firmware to run well (I used TomatoUSB /w VPN). Amazing features, including wireless N and gigabit WAN/LAN for under 100 bucks. Usually that alone costs over $100. Drawback is it doesn't have dual-band and 5ghz frequency.Amazing router if you need gigabit LAN and routing features. But if you need a router primarily for wifi connections, this is not for you unless you don't need 5ghz frequency/dual band.
