120GB is pushing it these days for OS and programs. You have to go through the small chore of moving your video and music folders to another hard drive.
Pros: Obviously its fast, but what really does it for me is the random read performance. This drive allows you to browse in multiple tabs in firefox, while doing a lot of other things without your pc slowing down waiting for hard drive IO. Its like having a RAID-1 setup without the complication, heat, noise, or power concerns. Comment:
An SSD is a basically a must have for anyone more than the basic user nowadays. Disk IO is a major bottleneck for so much now, even web browsing. The OCZ Vertex 2 Extended Sandforce addresses this problem with aplomb, providing competitive performance accross the board. I am really enjoying this drive so far. |

SSD is huge upgrade over HDD, everything loads instantly, 15 seconds to boot up OS. Price is still a bit high for the 120G capacity but that is plenty of space for the OS and any game I am currently playing so I would suggest when buying a SSD just to stick with your needs for now. Music and movies will be fine on the HDD. |

Very awsome hard drive, bought this for my M17 R1 and could not be more satisfied with it. The boot time has been cut in half, almost feels like the notebook is anticipating all my commands since it is very quick to load apps. Did not see a difference in games and load times but in windows there is a significant difference. This drive is awsome and will surely buy another for my desktop soon since this drive has proved to be AWSOME!!!! |

I'm really happy with the purchase. I compared the new Extended Sandforce 120GB with my previous OCZ Indylinx 120GB, and was impressed. The Sandforce was a LOT faster. Here are some numbers: (blocksize, sandforce linear read, random read, Indylinx linear read, random read):4KB Sand 49MB/sec,41 vs Indy 48,1816KB Sand 124,110 vs 90,4632KB Sand 141,132 vs 121,6364KB Sand 179,174 vs 142,95256KB Sand 198,197 vs 180,1381MB Sand 205,206 vs 194,157Warning, these numbers were the best that I obtained (0.07ms access time). Most tests were slightly worse than these numbers (0.08ms, or 0.09ms). I used roadkil.net diskspeed 2.0.As you can see, the Sand is faster on linear reads, but WAY faster on random reads (which is what you use most because you don't have to defrag SSDs).A very good product, and I didn't even have to buy a mounting bracket for it. The outside shielding feels a bit cheap, but that might just be me.
Pros: 250MB/s R/W as specs say for sequential. Random R/W is a lot faster than the other SSDs on the market, comparable to Intel X25-M's speed. Boots Windows 7 in less than 10seconds (not counting POST) Comment:
The OCZ Vertex 2 does what it's supposed to do, make your system faster, execute programs faster(assuming you use it as a boot-drive). I know some people have been complaining about space, this is what I usually do to save space. I change the directory of my documents, my pictures, my music, my video, all those libraries to my RAID0 2TB HDD instead of the OCZ, this can save a lot of space and it doesn't really slow down anything in terms of how fast you can access those files. I also install games onto my RAID0 drive just because they don't seem to get much speed when loading (save a few seconds maybe), for the trade-off of getting my SSD full with just 2-3 games. I've had this for 2 months now and it's still got 75GB+ left because of what I've been doing to save space. I strongly recommend people to update to the latest Vertex 2 FW upon purchase and get Intel RST 10.0 drivers after that (RST 10.0 caues OCZ fw update r to fail to detect the drive so install it after you update the fw) This gives a sequential speed boost of 10MB/s if you've been using RST 9.6, and over 20+ if you've been using the Microsoft controller driver. Now, this is assuming you're using an Intel chipset controller, not the Marvell one. (there's no point using the SATA 6Gb/s Marvell controller anyways). |

This is a great product, unfortunately, I did not have the means of installing it without hassle. After getting past a few days of troubleshooting and trying to install the drive and reinstall the OS onto a correctly aligned partition, it worked fine. If you're intending to use this without an OEM Windows 7 installation dvd, and with a manufacturer's recovery DVD, the effort might not ultimately be worth it. But I trekked through and did it, so its not impossible. |

Starts W7 Pro quickly - 45 seconds.Don’t count on OCZ's rebate program. No-win situation for consumers unless you buy/receive your Vertex 2 un-installed in your NCIX-built computer, then hand the SSD back to NCIX to have them install/load Windows on it. This likely won’t be convenient for you as you’d have to get your separately purchased SSD over to where ever your PC is being built.Small print on the rebate program is "sales invoice with the order-purchase date between 26 August 2010 and 8 September 2010 ...". However, I did not qualify as I placed the order 31 August 2010, but received my fully, NCIX-built computer 11 September 2010. Another order that I placed was for a 60GB OCZ Vertex 2 was denied because I placed the order before the rebate period, but received/paid for my fully, NCIX-built computer during the rebate period. |

Have to flash firmware. Make sure to run the firmware update tool as admin under windows 7.Get SMART errors (false errors) and may need to update motherboard BIOS. I didn't bother flashing my bios as my i7 920 is doing 4GHz and I didn't want the new BIOS to cause any instability.Most SSD tweaks are good - make sure to set page file on your ssd to 1-2GB as windows will crash if there is no paging file and it needs it. Also set prefetch and superfetch to 2 in registry (only runs during boot up).Got this for $255 by pricing Newegg when it had it on sale and also got the rebate so in the end it will be $235 for a Sandforce 120GB SSD! Not bad I must say. Although, I hate rebates! |
After reading so many posts on SSD's speed boost to an existing system, I've decided to get one myself from the Boxing day sale. I must say I'm more than satisfied with the performance, the best bang for the buck purchase ever. The only thing that worries me is the short lifespan of ssd in general and the fact that it doesn't give any warning of imminent failure. I'll have to start backing up my important files just in case.
