I leave it on all the time rather than turn it off. It seems to be doing the job so far. The heat isn't excessive and the indicator light isn't too bright. The only thing that worries me is that it does seem to be a piece of cheap plastic. I suppose for the price though you really can't complain!

Comment: I got one of these on sale and it may be the least expensive option available for an external, portable drive as such. I also have an Acomdata enslosure that is a little more robust, but it was also more expensive and installing the drive was more awkward. With this, slide out the tray, plug in the drive, attach a couple of screws to the drive to secure it, push the tray back in (connecting the LED is optional), and secure the end plate with two screws. Done.Some others here have talked about eSATA, but be aware that this enclosure is USB only. There are other models that have both.

Had some vibration issues with an older 250GB seagate; added 4 silicone nubs from the dollar store, laid it flat, did the trick.

The metal casing helps dissipate the heat of the drive and overall is a great buy. I use them for my PVR with a 500 GB Caviar black and for my WD player. As well for transferring and backing up files. No problems at all plus it comes with sata, esata cables and a esata plate adapter for the back of your computer. Great bang for your buck!

Excellent heat conductivity. Comment: This is an excellent device that's easy to assemble and is made of aluminum (except for the plastic moulded ends).Yes this unit does get hot, but that's how it should be...it gets as hot as your hard drive when it's working hard, meaning there is little heat trapped inside compared to the surface temperature. If you use this thing heavily, it might be an idea to have a small fan blowing on it or some kind of airflow near the unit (it makes a huge difference).If you keep the case cool, it's comforting to know that your drive inside is also cool.Excellent enclosure, and I strongly recommend it.

Pros:Inexpensive, easy to setup Comment: Bought this enclosure because the price was right, and because I have another enclosure from these guys (Vantec Nexstar 3) which is great.I was pretty disappointed when I opened this box. It feels like a cheap plastic toy. The A/C adapter looks and feels like a fire hazard waiting to happen. I have a 27" iMac and everything on my desk must look aesthetically pleasing ... this enclosure didn't cut it.I ended up putting my new drive into the old enclosure, and the old drive into this enclosure so that I could keep it in the closet and out of site.(On the plus side, the installation/assembly is easier than the 3. More open and more room to work with).

It's basically it's own night-light, almost it's that bright. Can be disconnected, though, so no big deal there.q Pros:Fancy blue LEDEasy to setup and use, but that's what you'd expect from an external enclosure Comment: Serves its purpose excellently; an effective cheap solution. Drive won't be used heavily. The power cable for the LED could be better positioned; if you frequently unplug and reconnect HDDs into this thing I can see a long-term issue being fraying or breaking of the wires on the LED power cable. No complaints otherwise, though. Worked out of the box just fine.

Pros:Cheap, reliable, works as advertised. Comment: I bought this with a WD 1 TB drive with my Bell 6131 HD satellite receiver for the PVR functionality. It's worked like a charm since I bought it. My main concern is the heat dissipation of the plastic case. Unfortunately, my receiver does not allow the HDD to spin down, it's going all the time, which is no fault of the case or the HDD. I find the case gets quite warm at times, but so far so good. I think anyone who intends to use for PVR usage would be better off getting a metal case because of the heat issue.The other issue is the brutally bright blue activity light for the enclosure. I had a CD case parked in front of it but finally put a piece of black electrical tape on top of it. A minor quibble. I would recommend this case, 8 months with the HDD spinning constantly and no problems so far.

Would have prefered a long line "\|" of light instead of a strong blue dot.- There is no hole in the rear and I don't think you make easily make one like on some other external case so you can plug a sata to eSata cable directly on the drive which you just can't with this case. Pros:- Cheapest external case I could find.- Nice look.- Very simple to install. Comment: I use it with a WD Black 1Tb in usb for PVR functionnality on my satelite box. Just don't buy if you want to make a cheap e-Sata case.

Dohboy@NCIX Rating: Review Date: 07/03/09	Vantec Nexstar Ck External 3.5IN SATA Black Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure USB2.0 Cons:Connectors hard to plug in, needed a screwdriver to force the cable on the inside in Pros:Small, Stand is fairly easy to set up Comment: I tried using this enclosure with a Western Digital Black 1TB drive and it was having trouble detecting it. Disk Management kept losing the drive and I couldn't transfer any data to it after partitioning/formatting it. I put the same drive in an Acom Data Samba enclosure which worked great right away. I am testing this right now with an old 120 GB Seagate drive which seems to be working alright so far, but I would suggest looking into alternate enclosures before getting this one.

After two months of using it, I've noticed that because it is actually made of plastic rather than aluminum, it warms up pretty quickly. Something it lacks is rubber feet, to mount it horizontally, like other Vantec enclosures have (I ended up finding some spare ones I had lying around). Apart from that, great enclosure and would definitely buy it again. :)

First off, the one that I bought in the past is actually different than the newer models, as the older model's power cord had a "5-pin" connector to connect to the enclosure, as opposed to the newer model which is more of a standard AC adapter connection (like a laptop's power cord). I'm not sure if that makes a difference at all, and may be why a previous reviewer had issues with the enclosure "blowing up" on him. The power cords are also very short and do not have a grounding pin, you may have to use an extension cord depending on how far away you have this thing from your power outlet. Having said that, everything else about this enclosure is top notch for the price and IMO is the best bang for your buck when it comes to external enclosures. Also, you do not NEED to hook up the LED connector (if the bright blue light bothers you).
