Plays about anything, good cost and properly built. Copying from the USB to HDD functions properly. UI could be a small far more user friendly and far more attractive, but hey it functions and no one has had troubles utilizing it. I Installed a 100Gb Sata HDD upon arrival. Immediately after a minor glitch (mentionned in Con) this point is just wonderful. Plays perfectly from HDD, USB and Ethernet.The built good quality is amazing. Feels genuinely sturdy and I was impressed. One particular Enormous CON, which I was not impressed with.As soon as I received the Unit, it was not operating whatsoever, I in fact believed I had a DOA. I open it up, examine my HDD installation, Then I noticed the Primary Board inside the box was not connected correctly. Thankfully I was in a position to repair it ahead of gifting it. I wonder how the Main Board not getting seated in the connector appropriately passed QC, not impressed with this. Therefore the -1 Egg. Really sturdy aluminum situation. Effortless to setup. I've had this box for about ten weeks now and I'm very pleased. I've tried most video formats with it and none have failed. I use primarily 720p and 1080p mkv files though. I let it play sequential files on my tv whilst I sleep and have had no "shutdowns" or freezing as other individuals have had. With the situation becoming aluminum, it acts as a heatsink, so attempt some air circulation guys. I believe this is a excellent product that does it job as described. I've currently advised this to several good friends and will most most likely get one more for my living room. I drop one egg only since of the frontend software program. You can't make a playlist unless you use an internal drive and the included computer software. I hope this will boost with updates. I rec'd my rebate with no difficulties. Nicely made, tiny, stylish Terrible GUI, limited potential to play back prevalent media varieties, slow windows sharing, no FTP client, slow copy from USB drives. The network applications randomly fail. And DHCP fails every time the device reboots. I genuinely wanted to like this as I was replacing a Western Digital box that had gone poor. The setup GUI only seems to give you control and doesn't let you alter something to give you actual manage more than the device.Most discouraging is that the cool built-in apps will randomly inform you they can not speak to the internet, and each and every time you reboot to a wired Ethernet connection, the device will inform you its not connected to the network, till you tell it to retry, and then it does. Yikes.But the worst sin is that frequent .mkv's with MPEG4 and other prevalent video codecs merely do not play on the box. I suspect the folks who are obtaining great success are only playing DVD ISO's, .MOV's and XVID's. Go to the help forum and it seems Patriot has abandoned the device. I think about myself to have a relatively high tech intelligence (that's why I Newegg), but for such a uncomplicated thing, this box will take a lot of tweaking to get set up. For instance, out of the box, the picture top quality is horrible, so bad that I was about to RMA it, when I found a buried setting for video output. The default setting in this menu is 'NTSC', not 480p. Considering that NTSC was the correct setting (vs the European PAL), I didn't bother to appear in there for resolution settings. At some point I figured it out and changed it from NTSC to 1080p 60Hz video output. Sharing files over the network ain't as uncomplicated as it should be either, specifically if you run a Mac environment like me I would very advocate this box for the price tag/value ratio. I can't picture that something out there could touch it on something considerably but the user interface.In my case, no internal drive required, as I was able to use my Apple Time Capsule as a media server over the network. Overall performance was fantastic in either situation, working with the network or the USB. Just wish it had that Plug and Play elegance. Of course, I love a challenge as well.
