These days DVD drives are so cheap and it doesnt matter which brand you choose but ASUS is very reliable. I wish they dont put the ASUS logo on the front.

Basically it does its job, nothing bad to say about it. I'm quite happy with the ASUS brand, generally means it's going to last. Hopefully it's true for this one too.

To be honest, I don't use an optical drive for much more than installing an OS these days. It gets used for the odd DVD or CD, but generally it sits dormant. Nice neat SATA connection, and it came at a very reasonable price.

It's a DVD writer, nothing too special these days. I hardly use these drives anymore. However when I replaced my motherboard with one that only had one ATA port I had to get rid of my older Pioneer DVR-112D as I also had an IDE hard drive and the cable couldn't reach both. I needed a SATA replacement, this was on sale.I chose it over a slightly slower Lightscribe drive - seeing that I hardly ever burn DVDs anymore I'd rather have a faster drive than one that can make nice labels that I'd never use.I copied a commercially-pressed DVD-ROM onto a DVD+RW as a test using Ubuntu Linux' Brasero burning application. The DVD-ROM read at a maximum of 8.4X and the DVD+RW (rated at 8X) burned at a maximum of 8.5X. Brasero indicated at the end that the read average was 6.5X. The good news is that the drive is very quiet for all these operations, much quieter than any other optical drive I have ever used. The bad news is both the read and write speeds didn't come close to those quoted by ASUS - the read speed should have been better as this was a commercial DVD-ROM in perfect condition, the write speed may have been limited by the media and slightly exceeded its speed rating.All in all, it's fast enough I guess. For lots of data it's best to put it on a USB drive these days anyway.The best thing about this drive is that it's very quiet...except for opening and closing the tray. The tray bounces quite a bit during this operation and there's a fairly loud gear grinding noise.The branding on the drive is also a little obtrusive, at least compared to my old Pioneer - I'm now realizing why Pioneer simply cast  all the DVD and feature logos into the plastic and didn't highlight them in white. This ASUS drive features prominent white-on-black pad printing. It's a little obtrusive in a clean black case but this is a minor gripe I guess.Overall though, a very nice drive. According to the ASUS it also uses a bit less power than its predecessors and competitors, this is certainly good.

I tend to stick with ASUS drives lately. The 20$ price mark is right. So far I have been using the identical drive on another build for over a year with no hitch, I expect the same for my second build with this drive.

This is a typical DVD reader. Keep in mind it's the OEM version. No screws, no box, the bare minimum.

Its a dvd drive. ON sale it is okay but it is one of the noisiest i have ever had. Would not buy again. I will stick to lg.

Good cheap dvd burner, but be warned some DVD's dont' play in it. It won't even see the DVD being there.

I got this as my second DVD-RW burner. Great product,comes with CD packed with great software. Some people reported issue with new firmware, I haven't had any issues and I am running the latest one. (device came with latest firmware) Other say that their drive became inoperative after updating the firmware.

I just buy what evers on sale most of the time so I expected it to perform up to par with the other models , no problems there and I was surprised to get a software disk with it, very nice. Would buy again.
