I bought 4 of these drives and one fails its SMART test, so I am now waiting for a replacement from Seagate.

Couldn't get it to work for more than a day. Ended up loosing approx 30Gbs of information that I will never see again.

Bought 3 of these, one had clicking sound and my hard drive health monitoring software detected bad sectors (on a brand new hard drive!!!). The other two hard drives seem to be perfect, at least so far. To get the updated firmware, contact Seagate online chat tech support - the easiest way to get the proper firmware.

So far, so good. I bought this drive for backup purposes and plan to buy another soon and mirror them. Drive is silent and has worked perfectly so far. No heating issues either. I would never use a drive this large for an OS as it would be a waste, imo.

Seagate touts this as one of their new ''eco-friendly'' drives that is 43% more power efficient. I suspect this is at the root of the time-out problem that one can read about all over the WWW with regard to this drive. It simply goes into some power saving mode and doesn't easily come out. In that mode it dead-locks the IO bus for every other access. Some find it times out for 30 second or a minute. Others report 5 minutes or more. I don't have the patience to wait to see how long it takes. My drive started acting up right out of the box. Seagate shouldn't have this drive on the market until they sort this issue out now that this problem is so well documented.

Couldn't format the drive out of the box. Have Vista 64 bit OS. Formatting would hang at 73%. I partitioned the drive in half, the first half formatted, but the second half stopped at 47%. Seagate support offered no solution that worked. Only had to wait a few minutes for online Live Chat with Seagate.

We bought 8 of these, and got bit by the SD17 firmware bug that everyone else on the internet has been seeing. The drives are usless. Tried all the spindown disabling tricks - nothing worked. Going to return these for the 1TBs instead. Less capacity, but 1000 times more useful.

Bought one of these drives as soon as it came out when it was $340,couldnt be happier although for some reason when running a 32-bit os,it seems to freeze a bit,i suppose which such a large capacity drive a 64 bit OS is is more than recomended for theyre ability to handle the data and achieve a good seek time,which enles the problem.CPU requests data,and cant calibrate the heads in enough time precisely enough and when the disk times out waiting for revised instrucions on the data's location on drive ,the os is still waiting for the data.essentially 64bit vista will be able to index the data on such a large medium better,havent tried 64bit xp with it but vista's enchanced drive speed capability is thanks to its indexing,overall good drive,but have a capable system for the data storage of this type on 1 drive,otherwise raid like hell

15 min is the default powersave spin down value for the external drives so maybe this is true also of the internal!? if i turn off the powersave on the external all my linux problems with timeout goes away. only way i know to turn it off is with the software that comes with the external though, so not sure how to do it on the internal of if this is not even the problem others are seeing (but it sure sounds like it)

I bough one in miami, now i have a huge storage. Everything worked fine in vista, I just love it!

altho i gave it poor quality i belive i just happoned to get a defective drive. the seagate barracuda series of hard drive are in my opinion the best.
