Lots of disk for the price tag. Very good thermal efficiency. Slow. It's a 5400rpm "green" drive, so you sacrifice performance for power savings. These had been originally designed to park the heads immediately after a really brief time (not positive if the new ones nonetheless do) -- this is a difficulty on *nix boxes, and you will have a quite high cycle count in a brief time. Running 3x RAID 5 on 3ware controller with no issues. Will most likely add two or three more to the array soon. This will likely support the efficiency problem, as far more disks in RAID 5 commonly equate to faster I/O. This array is not as rapidly as others making use of 7200rpm drives, but I can't complain at this value.

Great bang for the buck drive. Bought four of these to use in a NAS. So far they have been good. They are quiet, low energy, large storage space, and so forth. The only con I can come up with is that only one of the four came truely blank. The other three drives had WDs great tiny CD emulation partitioning that they use on some of their external drives. The extra partitioning created them unusable by my NAS at first but hooking them up in my Windows7 pc and a quick deletion of the partitions swiftly changed that.

I am making use of the drive in a NAS and is good for it considering that I hardly seem to overwhelm the drive through the network. Initial access is a tiny slow (possibly simply because the heads are resting) but the throughput seems fine otherwise. Initial access is a bit slow.

two words.. Quiet and Awesome.. Did I mention reasonably rapid? I had to disable the LCC since it would unload the heads just about every 8 seconds, causing the LCC to increase significantly. At least I caught it early. I have 4 of these attached to a 3Ware 9500S-4LP PCI-X card as a RAID5 and haven't had 1 problem, even in a 1U server situation.I am trusting these drives to thousands of GB's worth of family members photographs. I have stressed these out and so far not one particular has dropped out of the array. Nice.

Purchased 2 of these tough drives to place in my NAS. 1 of the worked and the other was defective. So my constructive critique is that a single of the tricky drives worked fine. Defective tough drive. The drive would pass the Swift and Extended S.M.A.R.T test but is unable to format devoid of finding an error. Furthermore, the drive seems to be operating fine, but you also cannot create a volume on this drive. I give it a two star rating due to the fact a single of the difficult drives are fine. Also the defective tough drive has a extremely weird situation, passes Intelligent but doesnt perform adequately. All in all the only tricky drives I obtain are Western Digitals, the is the 1st WD that I have received that is defective.

None First it is missing soon after the sleep. Next it died in less than 2 months. This is an update on my previous review of the WD15EARS 1.5TB drive. When I wrote my initial evaluation, the problem was not waking up from the sleep. Given that I located a Windows hotfix that alleviated the difficulty, I canceled the RMA and kept the drive.A week later, the program failed for the duration of a reboot. The WD drive has failed on the Wise diagnosis in the course of the POST. Disabling the Wise checking enabled the method to boot but the drive remained unaccessible. Any try to access that drive triggered the Windows explorer to lock up.Newegg was very valuable and took the drive back for a refund. I ordered a Samsung 2TB drive (my 3rd a single) to replace the dead WD.I will not be purchasing yet another WD internal HD for fairly sometime.

affordable, low power I purchased 8 of these drives for use with a 3ware 9650. Initially tested in a raid- configuration for performance baseline. 2 of the drives reset whenever any access was created. rma'ed those two, then located that three of the other people ran so slowly that when added to an array that was operating at 434 mb/sec writes, it would go to about 50-60 mb/sec. 2 of them would simply stop writing altogether for seconds at a time. RMA'ed them. Two of the replacement drives act the same - slow to cease on write speed. reads all appear to function ok.... I was organizing on returning the negative drives all at once, so I now have 13 drives, and only 6 of them work adequately. The return shipping for the advance replacement RMA's is going to price me much more than an additional drive! This makes me seriously consider getting a different brand.

Decent speeds, quiet, cool. I have about a dozen od these drives in my NAS's. These are also the drives that come in the WD Components external USB drives. They are not specifically the fastest in the world, but they do anything I will need them to do. I don't run games off them, but I do stream video and they perform fine. None but. Taking into consideration the number of drives WD makes, I wouldn't be surprised if an individual got a dead a single as soon as in a even though. don;t look at it an indicator of a poor high quality drive though.

Low Price tag Poor reliability, poor performance, unusable in the majority of hardware RAID environments due to capabilities disabled in firmware by Western Digital (TLER) that had been enabled in previous generations. I have had to RMA both of these drives several instances due to hardware failure and bad sectors. The drives excessively/aggressively park their heads, resulting in high levels of wear when utilised in RAID. The drives have a TLER setting which can\'t be modified that can trigger them to fall out of hardware RAID setups. Please prevent these drives and spend your difficult-earned funds on drives with greater performance and reliability.

Bought this along with an external difficult drive case to serve my residence backup demands. Was quicker than I expected becoming a "green" drive, but I'm sure the 64MB cache has some thing to do with that. Operates perfectly. None for me.

I have three other GREEN series drives operating fine, plus the 2 replacement ones are carrying out great so far. The GREEN series knocks it down. The RMA service keeps it up to a 4.Each negative drives were incredibly promptly replaced by WD. WD has printable return shipping for below Ů. The 1 exactly where they ship a replacement 1st, secured by a credit card until the RMA 1 arrives, took less than 5 small business days to arrive. The RMA 1 that I shipped & upon arrival at WD, would ship a replacement took a total of 7 small business days for drive in hand. This one particular stayed in it's box for awhile ahead of use. I be concerned about the GREEN series. I’ve had a 1.5TB & 2TB GREEN series advanced format drive fail less than 30 days soon after installing them & realigning them for XP. I’ve been employing & recommending WD drives for about 25 years with nearly no issues.Although neither one particular was a boot drive or even had installed programs on them, they induced severe problems with XP until they were removed. Even when switched over to my Win7 computer, one stopped it from effectively loading & the other slowed it to a crawl as I tried to open the WD diagnostics system. Both computers returned to normal the moment the drive was removed from the process. I suspect circuitry problems on the drives were the result in. I wish WD had told me what went wrong with the drives.

Has been in 2 computers, reformatted for XP. Got warning of drive problem & was in a position to copy 1.2TB of data to yet another drive. Drive failed when I tried to correct the dilemma right after sucessfull copy. WD had a replacement drive to me within a week. The enormous capacity tends to make for a lengthy copy time when virtually complete.I had to spend small return shipping charge. WD had a discounted return shipping label readily available on the internet.I've got dozens of WD drives. This is the 2nd WD drive that has failed throughout the warranty period. The other was a 250 GB, two+ years old. I have several WD drives nevertheless operating lengthy after the warranty expired.

I cloned a failing Seagate 500 Mb drive onto this drive using Acronis TrueImage 2012. The clone went flawlessly. Loading times are a bit longer with this drive compared to Seagate. Other than that, for the price I'm happy with it. Will eventually replace it with an SSD then use this for it's intended use, file storage.Would I buy another one? Sure, just not for a boot drive...

Unbelievable price tag on 1.5 TB drive. Also get no cost version of Acronis with the purchase of this drive. It is Very quiet no chittering noises at all. There actually aren't any except some people complain that it is three. GB /sec xfer rate and not the new 6. GFB/sec rate but I use my larger drives for back up and movie file storage anyway. When I 1st started out in house computing we got 35K storage on one particular 5.25 inch floppy, so this xfer rate is just fine with me. I am upgrading to a new mobo and when I do I believe a single SATA 6 will be plenty, possibly a RAPTOR as a technique drive. I still plan to preserve my 2 1.five TB Western drives and 3 750GB Samsung drives for storage.
