WD Caviar Green have been dependable drives for me. Slower speeds than 7200rpm drives but save energy. Good capacity and price ratio.

Western Digital WD15EARS Caviar Green 1.5TB SATA 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM
Cons:*5400 RPM *slow*not meant for OS installation

Pros:*large capacity*uses little power*good for long term storage
Comment:
This represents the large capacity hard drives that are coming out now. This 1.5TB will most likely replace the 1TB mainstream out now. This was pretty slow when an OS was installed. I would advise to only use this as storage for media files.

Western Digital WD15EARS Caviar Green 1.5TB SATA 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM
Cons:-Possible future reliability issues

Pros:-Western Digital reliability-Good cost/gB-Good size-Low power-Decent speeds
Comment:
It's a 3.5" hard drive. There's not much to say other than that it's priced accordingly, goes on sale frequently, has decent reads/writes, has power saving features, and is from the brand which is generally most reliable. There has been some talk about the green series drives being less reliable than the black series because of the power-saving variable-rpm motor... nothing is confirmed. keep this in mind.

I installed this on my first build. I had no problems installing it. I am pleased with the performance so far. It was not boxed or anything. I guess for the price it is a good deal. No complaints!

Western Digital WD15EARS Caviar Green 1.5TB SATA 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM
Cons:Slow, but you have to expect that with a product like this

Pros:Cheap and large capacity
Comment:
Got a pair of these for a buddy who is moving from DVD backups of 100s of gigs of data (shudder) to hard drive based backups.Paired with a dock, he has one drive internally for simple storage of all data he wants to backup, and then a 2nd one to use with the dock to make backups and send offsite. These drives take forever to format. The drive contains a method to use jumpers to format properly in XP. The drive did not come supplied with a jumper, but fortunately I had a container full of them on hand.

I got it at $59.99 for my HTPC. It is very quiet, and nearly silent. I have hear people complain about WD Green HDD before. For sure, I had problems with WD Green (had 4 1T Green HDD as protable drive, and all dead in a year). But those are the old model ones. These are EARS which is suppose to be better than before and support smaller unit allocation. I hope it won't fail me. Only time can tell.

This drive was paired up with a Seagate 1.5TB drive purchased earlier and a mirrored set was created for Windows 7 O/S. No performance loss with installation. Quiet and reliable. For $60 it was a good deal.

Western Digital WD15EARS Caviar Green 1.5TB SATA 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM
Cons:None so far if head parking issue has been resolved - I'll believe that when I see it.

Pros:Price. I got mine for $59.00.Setup went as smoothly under Linux as the 2T WD's.parted --align opt /dev/sdX - where X is the letter of the drive being set up.Again, I used GParted to make sure that it set up partitions and file systems properly. It offered all the right stuff with setup my MB instead of cylinder - starting with 1M free space.Apparently with 2-6-34 kernel 4k drives will be set up properly - with 2-6-33 - the above steps are required.
Comment:
The first of my 1.5T drives is WDC WD15EARS-00J2GB0 which seems to be the new model.the huge copies for backup have shown reasonable speed for these slower drives, so all seems to be working. I'll just have to see in the long run - but I'm extremely happy with setup and copying results of these 4k drives..

Cons:I was scared of the advanced sectors at first but after reading more realized it was pretty simple to take care of

Pros:Not slower than my older 1TB WD Green1.5TB for $60 on a deal
Comment:
Running under windows 7 as additional storage. No issues so far. I moved all files from my WD green 1TB for more space. The 1TB is now blank for when I need it.

Western Digital WD15EARS Caviar Green 1.5TB SATA 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM
Cons:I received an older 00Z5B1 model.Erroneous statement by WD that this drive is ready for use under linux.

Pros:$59.99 with free delivery. Very quiet.Has 4K sectors ("Advanced Format"), which will probably become standard on all hard drives soon.No issues with "Intellipark" like the EADS series
Comment:
I suppose I shouldn't blame WD for the inability of linux to handle the Advanced Format sectors.Unless you align the file system structure to the physical sectors, performance suffers. The solution is simple, but should be done.See http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-4kb-sector-disks/index.html?ca=dgr-lnxw074KB-Disksdth-LX

good, cheap, and reliable drive to backup all your media. When transfering about 100GB of files the drives initial transfer speed starts around 95MB/S and slowly drops to a steady rate of around 40MB/S
