Great router! I easily updated this one with DD-WRT firmware and was able to get it configured without issue. This router works perfectly out of the box. It is a fantastic unit for boosting your existing infrastructure or expanding your wireless range.

This a wonderful router, incredibly properly built and really durable. This router is meant for custom firmwares! Like dd-wrt and tomato. The stock firmware sucks.I am presently running the latest version of tomato and have had no issues what so ever, in no way had to reboot the router as soon as due to the fact I have had it (a small over a month now). The stock firmware sucks, if you don't plan on flashing custom firmware to this router, I would stay away!

Comment:
It was excellent for its time. Fast for its time. Fair price. As technologies becomes more and more data heavy, the firmware for these is just strategy outdated. In far more detail: The internal memory cache on the routers store data facts in the course of usage. Just before, while memory was not a big problem, the routers worked excellent! A reset (Power off/on) each three months was all it required. Now, even so, the memory fills up extremely fast (especially when gaming). The firmware doesn't tell it to dump the memory, thus it maxes out and BAM, it refuses to send you service. For me, I constantly surf the internet as well as game on the net. Getting a shared network with my buddies, a reset is needed each couple of days. Even if you don't want wireless N, I would suggest obtaining a various brand and a newer router for the time becoming. Or at least until Linksys does one thing about it.

There is Nothing wrong with the factory installed firmware -- if it meets your needs. This is a fine beginning router for the inexperienced. If what you require it for is to network a cable modem, a couple of PC's, laptops, a network printer and, say, some Kindles and I-Pods, the stock firmware will do fine. I've got users that have been pleased for years who wouldn't change a thing. The factory firmware is rock stable. But what everyone else is saying is also accurate -- mainly because the firmware is open source, it is lawful to replace it with good quality freeware (i.e. DD-WRT or Tomato) that will perform in techniques the factory installed firmware does not. I believe DD-WRT is much more powerful, while Tomato is leaner. And this flexibility is the actual beauty. This really should be your first router. It's a wonderful commence, at a low value, with the capacity to grow as your requirements expand. The hardware is incredibly mature. It is NOT obsolete, but it's nowhere near cutting edge, either. Cutting edge tech at the moment presents little much more than a range and speed upgrade. The Ethernet connection speed on this is 10럼, not 1000 and the Wi-Fi is B/G not N. Newer equipment will be completely backward compatible, although, and it's still a lot faster than the cable modem or DSL. If some day speed becomes a dilemma for you, I'll bet you discover a new purpose for this flexible little router. I've put numerous of these in family members situations over the years and I've never had 1 fail. Geek or not, everybody forgets about it, since it just works.43x Customer Selection Awards and counting. NewEgg should order these points by the railroad-vehicle. Weekly. Get 1.All from the Egg.

Cons:Pain to set up

Pros:No dropped connectionsCustom firmware
Comment:
Bought a certified refurbished router that didn't end up working and had to get an exchange. Replacement worked fine but was still annoying to set up. With that said, everything now works perfectly. If only needing a router for wifi, this old model will do the trick as good, if not better, than any of the newer routers.

Pros:Easy set up
Comment:
Set up took very little time and was simple, even though I didn't use the included setup disk. Chose this router due to my previous experience with a d-link unit (not a pleasant experience) and the positive testimonial from my brother, a network admin.

Linksys WRT54GL 4 Port Wireless G Broadband Router Linux Version 54MBPS 802.11G 802.11B
Cons:+ Wireless G.. should be N

Pros:+ Can install 3rd party firmware+ Extremely reliable
Comment:
This is probably the best consumer router Linksys has built. It has enough memory, decent 200 MHz CPU and you can flash the hell out of it! Any 3rd party firmware works, most popular one being DD-WRT. Can't go wrong with this one.. too bad there isn't an N version out there because Linksys' current N routers are absolute garbage.

This router is one of the best router I've ever owned. I currently have two of these and have flashed both of them with the tomato firmware. This firmware pumps up the router making it competitive with routers that cost a couple hundred bucks. Great product from Linksys.

Cons:Not wireless-N

Pros:Stable and consistent signalHackabilityLinux by default
Comment:
Really, is there any other router to consider if wireless-N is not a priority? I don't think so. This router is ripe for the hacking with the likes of Tomato and DD-WRT. Turn this inexpensive router into a full-fledged powerful router. If you want a router and don't care about wireless-N, get this and don't look back.

This is still one of the greatest home routers available to date. It does not support wireless N, however it has a very good signal strength and also runs the linux firmware which gives you several options as far as which firmwares to run (3rd party).

Comment:
I use 2 of these setup with Tomato firmware with OpenVPN setup to bride together two networks, saved me a tone of money that would have been used on a higher end router with VPN support and the configuration is of course now alot easier without the need of dedicated VPN servers running.Flashing/Updating the firmware is extremely easy with the default linksys web interface. On its own by default this router is still very impressive, easy to setup, easy to configure.Just wished there was a Wireless N version with the same firmware options.

Comment:
This is the ideal open source product as most use it with Tomato. However, I think there are cheaper alternatives out there such as this Rosewill Router RNX-GX4 . However, the Rosewill router has far less customer support.http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166032&cm_re=rosewill_router-_-33-166-032-_-Product

Cons:price is still a bit high

Pros:lack of issues that seem to plague routers these days, runs Tomato great
Comment:
These (and other WRT54GL variants) have been around so long, it's amazing they still fetch around $60 seeing as they don't have the latest features like 802.11n. But, to their credit, they do work absolutely great. It's nice that after their departure into vxWorks or whatever non-Linux firmwares Linksys brought back the "GL" version (Linux)--and not for the default firmware, which is still mediocre, but the hardware that could support 3rd party firmwares. (It's also amazing that my old WRT54G v1.1 is still kickin' great with Tomato, and it is almost identical to this WRT54GL except for a faster processor or something.)I have two of these units running the latest v1.28 Tomato firmware. The default software works ok... if you're the type who sets it up and never wants to touch the web interface again if possible. But if you're going to be in there any more I see no reason why not to install Tomato or another of the 3rd party firmwares. Tomato is just awesome, you get a ton more features out of the unit, the interface is much easier to use, more modern, and more reliable. I can't say enough good about it.I tried a couple different DLINKs or other brands over the years and I have never had good experiences. There's always been stability issues, terrible web interface bugs, constant rebooting and resetting. I have had such a great experience with these Linksys routers than I just can't be bothered to try anything else until I have to.

Linksys WRT54GL 4 Port Wireless G Broadband Router Linux Version 54MBPS 802.11G 802.11B
Cons:The biggest con with this router is that by flashing it with third party firmware you void the manufacture’s warranty. On top of this, if done improperly or with incompatible firmware the router can be made into a fairly expensive paper weight and or doorstop. This is called “bricking” the router, recovery is possible most of the time and I’ve included a link below for how to unbrick the router. If this doesn’t appeal to you I would think twice before purchasing this router. On top of this, most of the third party firmware out there will need some networking experience for all of their features to be fully realized. That being said this router is not the best for an inexperienced computer user.

Pros:As the others have stated before me the WRT54GL benefits from the ability to be flashed with third party firmware. I would not recommend this router to someone who plans to use just the standard firmware, if that’s your intent I would go with the WRT54G. However, that being said this router is an excellent buy for someone with networking experience who wants an inexpensive router to do expensive networking tasks.Like what you may ask? Well I may tell you that you can set up your own VPN server on this router, as well as a Samba or FTP server, it can perform as a bridge, it can boost wireless signals, it can be a Radius server, and I’m sure if you’re cool enough you can even get it to slice, dice and julienne. Those however are just a few of the extra features that you can add with third party firmware. On top of all this you get one robust little machine. A 200MHz with 8MB RAM and 2MB of flash might not seem like a lot but it is more than enough for home or small office nee
Comment:
My GL is currently sitting in my apartment running OpenWRT White Russian 4, an open source firmware which lets you choose which features to add (http://openwrt.org/). I also tried DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com/) but OpenWRT won out for me because it let me pick and choose which features I want installed. If the router has the stock firmware there’s a limit on the size of a firmware flash. I think the limit is 3MB, if the third party firmware you are trying to flash the router with is bigger than this limit the web-interface won’t allow you to flash the router. Use the TFTP command instead, see the brick link below for an example.

A great router that I have owned for 2 years. It has fabulous flexibility when you load 3rd party Linux firmware on it. The ability to increase the signal strength and many other features is simply fantastic. The features that this router gives you are amazing, well worth the price.I have only had to reset is a handful of times over my 2 years of ownership. Given all the file-transfers I do, this is pretty good.

Linksys WRT54GL 4 Port Wireless G Broadband Router Linux Version 54MBPS 802.11G 802.11B
Cons:- Power cord is VERY short.

Pros:- Able to flash to Tomato Firmware.- It works, havent been disconnected yet.
Comment:
I got this router for both wireless access and the ability to get MLPPP with teksavvy in the future. In the meantime ive flashed the standard Tomato Firmware and it works good. My biggest complain is the fact the power cord is very short. It didn't matter where I placed the power bar, the router cord was to short to place on top of my desk. I first had to place the router on the floor until I taped a second power bar on the side of my desk.
