This is the best standalone platform for anyone who needs to run something custom. The device is rock solid, and is a build and leave it once it's up and running.

Could have more/better filtering
Comment:
I replaced an ethernet linksys 4 port router with this one, and it does not have as good filtering (firewalling) as the one it replaced. (As far as I can tell). Also I get a stronger signal from some transmitter outside my than I do from this one inside my house. (I do not know how far away the other one is.)

Once setup was accomplished, has worked perfectly!
Comment:
This router was not as straight forward to set up as indicated in advertising. Once the manuel was downloaded and digested, the setup became easier; yet still required some guidance from my ISP and Linksys tech support. A genuine problem with IP addressing between my ISP and the router defaults. Once this addressing conflict was resolved the router has worked perfectly with good range and power. Security issues are well considered and easy to implement. This router is my second Linksys and the reliability is second to none 24/7. All my systems run on 802.22g so the speed of N-wireless equipment was not necessary. Eventually, I will upgrade to N; but for now G-level does just fine. At least no complaints from anyone yet.

Great Router/Firewall
Comment:
Bought this when my ancient Linksys firewall/switch died. This unit exceeds my expectations, is more user friendly ( although many more options ), and the open source DD_WRT images make this unit exceptionally powerful and affordable. Had a minor issue when performing the initial setup. I was using Linux, in spite of the insistence to use IE as the browser. I spent some time before giving up and getting a windows laptop to use IE, then everything went great. Would recommend this to beginner and advanced user alike.

Comment:
When flashed with DD_WRT this is the best home router money can buy for the price (in my opinion). I'm using the DD_WRT VPN version and was able to set up a site-to-site VPN with two of these devices between my two offices. Absolutely fantastic router/3rd party firmware combination.

The default signal strength wasn't very good, was getting poor speeds although good signal strength inside apartment. Replacing with 3rd party firmware solved the problem, now can boost signal.

Comment:
Ive been running 5 of these GLs in public and business hotspots. We flashed them all with DD_WRT v24 and all have been running rock solid. The WRT54GL is specially designed to accommodate 3rd party firmware and you really should only buy this GL router model if you intend to flash it with 3rd party firmware, in my care DD_WRT. The Linksys firmware is very basic as they only expect you to go to 3rd party firmware.

Cons:Not much really

Pros:Can install custom firmware. Great value for this price.
Comment:
I picked this up to play around with installing my own firmware. I installed a couple of the variants out there and ended up sticking with the Tomato firmware. Nice and powerful. I especially like the port knock feature. I access my system remotely and this has eliminated tons of ssh attempts in my logs.

Comment:
I chose this router because of its history for being reliable hardware. I installed Tomato 1.23 instead of DD-WRT.v24_sp1_generic .. my understanding being that Tomato has better QOS right now, until DDv25, and that T is thought to not reboot/crash as much DD. I run three VOIP apps, several web apps, and ftp servers intensively 10 hours a day and it all functions perfectly. Kudos Linksys/Tomato .. DD in future? (maybe)

It owns, pawns and rules! It is well above-average, it has one of the very best reviews of any other router up to date.Received it March 09 2009 ans still not out-dated, still outperforms the latest routers.I'll maybe do the switch when IPv6 or Optical Fiber will be out. Or maybe if I really need 802.11n or newer...But I'll still keep it for years!

Cons:More expensive than they used to be, ugly

Pros:The best available consumer router
Comment:
These things are workhorses once you've put Tomato on them. Mine goes months without reboots, and I put it under a lot of load. The biggest downside is that it's really ugly.

Pros:Great router, can beat internet throttling
Comment:
This router + Tomato firmware = no more internet throttling. This router replaced my previous D-Link WBR-1310. I have to say, after getting this router, the signal strength increased dramatically. I was even able to get good signal down in my basement. This is a great router, highly recommended.

Cons:Pricy for non-techy users

Pros:Performance, upgrade-ability
Comment:
First off, the product quality and warrantee will ensure you get good use out of this product for a long time to come. Secondly, the linux version allows custom firmwares, so you can really take advantage of the security features behind this product. Thirdly, and unfortunately, its too expensive and high tech for grandma and grandpa.

Linksys WRT54GL 4 Port Wireless G Broadband Router Linux Version 54MBPS 802.11G 802.11B
Cons:Strange shaped AC adapter. If they'd rotated the prongs it'd save me a AC slot. A little dated, no wireless N. Could use more RAM for the "mega" firmwares, but not a necessity.

Pros:Works very well. Works even better with custom firmware.
Comment:
Working very well so far. Only issue was trying to get it to work in client bridge mode with my old D-Link. This works well for most things, but works strange with XBox System Link, and a few other things that don't like the way the MAC addresses get translated. Will be ordering a second soon to replace the old D-Link so I can run it in proper WDS mode to fix this issue.
