They got most of it right

Very nice install, no issue with drivers, but once again no codecs for windows media player, 9 out of ten media files wont play. Why is it VLC will play almost anything out right out of the box and media player requires additional codecs?

This OEM product installed just fine. I had to spend several hours turning off many of the new features and fiddling with the rest to get them to work the way I want them. Why can't they make this easier? Why can't they have one place to go to configure all the new features so we don't have to hunt and peck around to find all of them? I was however duly impressed that when windows finished installing I could actually surf the internet without having to do anything but open internet explorer. Linux installs have been doing this for years, about time bill gates caught up. Do realize that there are problems with 64-bit. You get a version of internet explorer that is 32 bit and this is the default here, there is also a 64 bit version buried in the menu. Flash player only comes in 32 bit so the 64 bit version of internet explorer is severely limited in what you can do. Java comes in 64 or 32 bit but you can run only one flavor on your PC.

Simply Better
Comment:
Windows 7 works great! Had it for a few days now and computer runs a lot quicker. If you have Vista, they are some limitations and downfalls of the previous OS, but 7 is more stable than Vista. We use it at my IT company, Interface Technologies, and our business clients and even our home users love it!

Pros:64 bit, Easy to use, nice design.

This is way better then Vista, though i will still stay with XP as my primary operating system. Also good if you have a direct X10 card or direct X11 card.

buy it with a new drive
Comment:
my xp pro was hanging up alot, so i decided if i was going to have to do a clean install and reinstall all my apps i might as well try win7. install was pretty painless since i installed on a new drive. make sure you get pro or above to have the xp virtual machine for your old apps. if you can't back up all your data, save yourself alot of trouble: buy yourself a new drive and do a clean install. then go and get ownership of your old drive. it takes a little longer but you don't want to buy this and do an upgrade. i gave the 4 star rating on value because it seems like it could be less expensive. but honestly, it really does all you want and has some cool features. if it holds up without crashing i could give it the fifth star.

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders
Cons:The cursed Allow/Deny security dialog that I turned off right away

Pros:Nice interfaceReally much better than XP at fetching the right drivers64 bits gives you access to much more RAM
Comment:
I was building a new machine, and figured that enough time had gone by that vista problems would be fixed. The win7 64 OS is pretty nice. Almost all my existing 32bit programs run fine and install the same way. No need for special compatibility mode stuff. I run IE 32bit (the default) so I can use the Java32 bit installation. You need to run 64bit Tortoise subversion if you use it. Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 requires a 64 bit upgrade to 10.1 (free). All your 32 programs get another 1GB of memory because of the bigger address space. I think MS did a really nice job of backward compatibility with 32bit software.

Working well for me
Comment:
After a month of use Window 7 has been rock solid without a single crash. I tend to run at least 4 programs all the time and up to 7 or 8 on occasion. The only problems I've had was with XP Pro and getting my emails and contacts to export into 7. I had to upgrade Outlook on my old machine to get the export to work. Not really a Windows 7 problem.

Comment:
Ordered on a Thurs. and it arrived Friday. I had backed up my data already and installed on Sat. Install took roughly 30 minutes. You'll be prompted to do an Upgrade or Custom Install. I chose Custom and blew away my existing Vista installation by selecting format on the Advanced option. Choose your user name, time zone, and a few othr options and your good to go. Hardest part was reading the License key (took a couple of tries).

Microsoft's every other strikes again!
Comment:
I've been installing MS OS's since DOS 1.0 and every other release has been good (which also means every other one has been bad). Since Vista was bad in my opinion, I'm not surprised that Windows 7 has turned out to be very good. Most of the things about Vista I hated are much better in 7 and things I did like about Vista are as good or better in 7. Don't be afraid to move to Windows 7 if you didn't like Vista.

I was in need of a new Operating system when the previous one came out parenthesis here this page does not allow me to mention it by name parenthesis here got released but I did not like the reviews and the horror stories. I had some issues with having to go on line to get drivers for nearly everything that I put into the unit. I did find that Windows 7 (64 bit) is backwards compatible with all (so far) of my software.

An Improved OS
Comment:
Using Windows through the years, start with Ms Dos through 98, 98 being the worse one could imagine if all of these dreadful BSOD would be silenced, well Microsoft came close with 2000 which was based on the NT architecture and with XP, never used Vista but I heard some mix reviews, now Window 7 so far is a big improvement over the past editions, the Gui in fact is set up sort of like the apple's Mac OS X lepard, just look and compare, so far the windows os a improvement over the rest, I feel the Microsoft is going to give the mac world a run for their money, I would of gave this os 5 stars but I think Microsoft needs to improve the duel monitor support.

Finally...MS made something worth using
Comment:
To qualify myself, I have been in the IT industry since windows 3.1. Windows has always been a horror. Each version was laden with problems from day one. However, Win 7 has been stable as hell. I cant say anything bad about it. You do need a system that's beefed up. If you have a p4 or less, dont bother. Wait until you get a new machine, and then get win7 along with it. However, get it off of ebay. I paid $129 for a full verified install of win 7 pro. Its worth every penny.

Comment:
I stuck with WIN XP when vista came out hopeing to wait till the next one. Win 7 reviews convinced me to try this new O/P system out and since I was Biulding A new computer anyway it was the perfect time. I just love the new windows 7. I thought I would have more trouble than I did getting used to it but XP allready feels like an old friend I can say good-buy to. I experianced enough about vista to be glad I ignored it. I realy like all the newly upgraded features and functions included in this system and find that their use is practical not just a gimic. I'm looking forward to getting to know my new system and finding ways to make use of it's powerfull tools, it's nice having a new up to date computer which allows me to take advatage of all that win 7 has to offer me . Love the new operating system, highly recomend upgrading no matter which older system you have.

Great OS
Comment:
I ran the Beta and RC before finally buying Windows 7 Professional. It is by far a better OS than Vista. I have been a big fan of Windows XP and went back to it after trying Vista and found it to be lacking. With Windows 7 I didn't even wait for Service Pack 1 like I have with previous new versions of Windows. Windows 7 is well worth ngetting.

Great OS
Comment:
I ran the RC since it was released and finally bought the professional version and installed on an OCZ Vertext 128 GB SSD - runs great and loads in less than 30 seconds from cold start. Love the ability to set-up RAID features in the software. Have my SSD as a boot disk and use two WD500GB disks in a mirror to store data - a cinch to set up. Great networking features also compared to XP - you will not regret upgrading or switching to this OS

Win 7 is looking good
Comment:
I have been a fan of XP for several years, but hated how long it took to boot up. Finally, Win 7 does something about that, and after a month, it is looking good. Other than the occasional annoyance of trying to find where things went, I love the speed and the new look.

Best Windows Yet!!
Comment:
Far better than Vista. I love being able to use more that 4 gig of memory. I'm running my 64 bit system withthe i7 core and 6 gig of memory. So far its fast and responsive. I also love the fact that it recognizes the TOS video files without having to have an secondary program. All my DVD's show up in the library now without having to do mods to Windows.
