Paid $69.99 during boxing week sale. Now they jack up the price to $79.99. If you need a 2TB hard drive to store all your music and videos, this is the one to get

Western Digital WD20EARS Caviar Green 2TB SATA 3 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM
Cons:NA

Pros:Fast for a green drive. Super quiet. 64mb cache really helps speed small transfers.
Comment:
I've got a total of 10 of these drives in 2 PC's.I have 6 in my server in raid 5, and they work great.I've not had any failures at all, never had to rebuild the array.I've not had any cluster failures. This would make a great drive for any storage. The 64mb cache is very handy for transferring small files.I get about 110MB/s consistently on larger files.

Cons:only 2TB ?

Pros:2TB, cool, quiet
Comment:
I bought it to store movies, videos, games, music, pictures ... and well, it can hold 2TB of data! Stays cool, speed is good enough for a data hard drive. Using it in my FreeNAS and considering buying 3 more for a Raid 5

Cons:8second park time (should be changed with WD firmware utility)

Pros:Great price, 64MB cache
Comment:
Ultimately, its worth the price, despite the configuring you have to do before hand (using wdidle3.exe). Not quite as quiet as a black drive but for this price, you can't complain.

Pros:Quiet and runs cool.
Comment:
I have been using this in a Synology DS110j NAS. My hard drive has packed in after less than 2 months. I have to say I'm very disappointed. Since my 30 days is gone I guess I'll be dealing with WD for warranty. I really expected better reliability since this is a WD. I have a 1 TB WD Caviar Green in an external enclosure that I've been using for close to 18 months with my Bell 6131 receiver. It runs 24/7 and has been working like a champ. I'll warranty this 2 TB, and see how the next works. Maybe I just got a dud.

Western Digital WD20EARS Caviar Green 2TB SATA 3 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM
Cons:Slow

Pros:Low power, Quiet and very reasonable price
Comment:
Another typical Green Low Power drive from Western Digital. It appears (to me at least) to run very quietly, and doesn't use much power. Of course, since it's Green it can be expected to be slower than other high power drives of the same capacity, but then that's the tradeoff. Have not noticed any problems since purchase and would definitely recommend if you are in need of storage drives.

This is really your best bang for your dollar when looking for a storage or backup drive. I would not recommend using this for an OS drive due to it's head parking feature and the fact that it is a low RPM drive. If you want an OS HDD, look at the WD black.

Cons:Green... so their problems.

Pros:Excellent space/pricing
Comment:
Let's just state the obviously, 2TB and prices for it is dropping, you can't beat the space/pricing that you get from this drive.Keeping it short, it's a green drive, so it's obviously not an OS drive... but you also don't know the rpm which the drive spins at or when it'll randomly go to sleep...Great drive for storage.

Western Digital WD20EARS Caviar Green 2TB SATA 3 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM
Cons:Automatic Head Parking

Pros:Price, Quality
Comment:
Bought one of these strictly for disk-based network backups. It works well for this. As others have mentioned, it's not a fast drive and it really should not be used for your Operating System. What not enough people are reporting in these reviews is that drive automatically parks it's head every 4 seconds when it's not active. This leads to a tremendous amount of head parking cycles and has been attributed to early drive failure. There is a utility called wdidle3 which will report how many seconds your drive is configured to wait before parking the heads. The utility also has the ability to turn off this 'feature' and it's highly recommended. All in all, a great cheap drive but, as with all things, knowing it's strengths and weaknesses (and their work-arounds) is key.I strongly recommend this drive and I also strongly recommend turning off the head parking 'feature'. In addition, is it just me or is Western Digital trying to cache in on the 'green' market? I'll leave you to decide :-)

Western Digital WD20EARS Caviar Green 2TB SATA 3 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM
Cons:I'll see where the head parking issue has gone soon enough - but mine are backup drives.

Pros:Drive one - of many. update  - second drive went as smoothly as first.I got a super price.Of course as a Linux user I was a little wary of how things would go. Would things not work, and then require lots of work backing up stuff a second time.http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/237I bravely triple checked that the drive was the proper one, then went to a root terminal and issued:# parted --align opt /dev/sdX (where X varies according to your HDD)Just to be sure I moved to a graphical interface GParted and was given the correct options as to start sector and not using cylinders.Things seemed to go too smoothly. Now I'm copying data at the usual speeds I expect.I'm using a NextStar dock with an A/C fan blowing on the back, and checking drive temps with hddtemp (Linux).I doubt that anyone will use this as a main operating system drive - but from kernel 2.6.34 it will be possible to install properly on 4k drives.
Comment:
Overall, I looked over all the setup instructions, went with the simplest which worked, and now I'm saying to myself, "That was it? A few seconds of setup?".Of course a block check of the drives can take place overnight.....For now, I'm really happy. The arcane instructions came down to running one CLI command which apparently worked, then looking in amazement as GParted came up with all the suggested settings. And things do seem to be working just fine at 47-60MiB/s - which given the nature of what is being copied is normal. Temps of 30-34C. I could do better with proper enclosures and I got some of them, too. This review was modfied by poster @ 12-04-10 03:52 PM

If large amount of storage space is what you need than maybe this drive is for you as long as you are not looking for fast read/write. But you get to save the planet a little by using green.

Pros:capacity, value
Comment:
I purchased this drive to use it in a thermaltake blacx duet. Unfortunately, this drive is not recognized over the esata connection. I have tested this with multiple drives and duets and it seems that the duets do not like green drives, or at least the ones with, supposedly, variable RPM. Having said that, I would still recommend this drive as a media storage drive b/c of $/GB.
