Cons:Autopark feature

Pros:Price/GB, Silent and lots of space
Comment:
I like it so far. Never have a problem with WD hard drive. All my WD hard drive still running fine, even after 11 years it's still going strong. Rather than Seagate I've got many bad unit and problem over the same time. Silent but making little noise with the autopark feature. A good 1.81Tb once formated. Speed is good.

A great drive for storage and media. Surprisingly quiet. Read and write performance is very good for an energy efficient drive. This is my second WD20EARS and I would gladly buy more to expand my home servers storage when needed.

Cons:Drives takes a bit to "wake up"

Pros:Quiet operationStays cool
Comment:
I recently purchased this drive to throw in my rig for data storage. The drive stays very cool even under constant use. When accessing the drive it does take a bit to wake up from the power save mode which can be irritating. I would recommend this drive to anyone looking for a cheap large storage solution.

Nothing seems to come to mind since it didn't function. Neweggs RMA policy but it still expense me ฟ to ship it back. Lasted 25 hour then absolutely nothing. Losss all the information and the BIOS can't even see it even although the drive is spinning. Extremely Unreliable. Be quite cautious. The expense of the drive need to be multiplied with the price of shipping it back an forth RMA'ing dead unreliable drives. Could take into account yet another brand or distinct drive.

Western Digital WD20EARS Caviar Green 2TB SATA 3 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM
Cons:- Doesn't perform as advertised in the WD specs. My other WD drives read/write at almost exactly the speed listed in the official specs, but this 2 TB Green only reads/writes around 80 MB/s, which is very significant when transferring 100s of GB.- Heard these have a lot of failures, but maybe the frequency of failures is no higher than other drives and this is simply a very popular drive.- You must register your drive with WD to download WD Align, so do that BEFORE installing the drive! I'm on 7 and just downloaded WD Align to verify my drive was using 4k sectors because the Windows disk manager only reports logical sector size (which will be 512 on AF drives). I recommend Googling for the WD Align installer because there are several non-WD links which don't require registration.- I'm a bit concerned about the load/unload cycles, which is already at 420 in SMART after 233 hours of 24/7 operation. Supposedly the WD drives are rated at 300,000 lifetime cycles, which gives me around 19 years at this rate. However, I was planning on using the drive for downloads as well, but reports suggest that generates hundreds of cycles per day. This is definitely intended solely as a media storage or backup drive. It's possible to modify the firmware of the drive to change how long the drive must be idle for before the head is parked. I actually made and burned the disc to do this with, but haven't been bothered by the cycle issue enough to do the very easy fix.

Pros:- Very quiet- Very cool running- Big and cheap- Easy to install as long as you're not on XP
Comment:
Cheap, relatively fast, and very quiet/cool. Idles 6C lower than my 2 WD Blacks which are in the same fan-cooled cage. HD noise isn't something I've heard since the days of IDE drives, and this is no exception. I'm disappointed that the transfer speed is around 20 MB/s lower than quoted in the official specs, while my WD Blacks are within single digits of their rated speeds (not the bus speeds, obviously). However, for a mass storage drive, performance is more than satisfactory. Directory listings are provided instantly and the ~80 MB/s transfer speed never deviates and starts immediately. There are a lot of reports on various forums about the "load/unload cycle count" field in SMART readouts. Basically, the Greens park their heads when the drive is idle for several seconds, which saves power. I have noticed no performance hitches and the transition from parked to active is seamless. The concern is that WD rates the drives for 300,000 load/unload cycles. I personally have around 0.5 cycles per hour average (423 cycles/233 hours), and this will probably drop  since I put around 200 cycles on in the first day as I transferred a lot of files to the drive. This gives me just under 19 years of operation before the average drive fails. What if I wanted to store frequently-accessed documents on this drive or use it for downloads? I'd accumulate hundreds of cycles per day according to these anecdotal reports which are easily found on Google (search: wd20ears load unload). It's possible to modify the firmware on the newest drives to wait for 5 minutes of idle time before parking the head (on older drives you could disable the timer), and this is very easy to do. The original reports came from Linux users with logs files being written every 10 seconds or so, which would let the drive park the head, and almost immediately have to unpark it. That behaviour could be compensated for by changing the idle timer, effectively keeping the drive awake 24/7 (like a normal drive; I don't think such a state would harm a Green).Personally, I'm not particularly worried about the cycle count anymore. I'm realistically putting on maybe 5-10 cycles per day, with half of those from misclicks in Explorer; watching an entire video creates 1 cycle since the head won't park during playback. I think as long as you don't use the drive for certain file sharing protocols or as an OS drive (it's too slow anyway), you should be okay for the long haul. We'll probably have 10 TB SSDs for $60 by the time these drives are beginning to wear, anyway.

Comment:
Low cost, large storage The reliability of these drives are horrible. I went against my superior judgement and bought three of these drives when building my NAS about 7 months ago. Inside the very first month I started having troubles out of 1 of the drives, it was slowing the entire raid array down (raid five) and would take really long times to respond. My write speeds went from 160 MB/s to < 1 MB/s due to it. Now 7 months in a different 1 is beginning to act up in the precise very same way.WD truly wants to work on the reliability of these drives, you can not have some thing this massive that has a tendency to fail so easily. It's to a lot data at risk, luckily I'm running raid five and also have external backups of everything. The only factor drives like this are beneficial for is storage, but they are to unreliable to be utilised as storage. I've been a long WD supporter, but they are starting to release unreliable items which is the exact same thing that made me stop utilizing Seagate back in the day and commence utilizing WD. I may have to attempt Seagate again mainly because of problematic drives like these, add see if they've gotten any much better in the last few years since I utilized them.

Buyed this harddrive for the main reason of stocking pictures, movies and music and this is getting the job done! It's not the fastest drive for stocking your files. I would not suggest installing your OS or your applications on this HDD. This drives would probably be great for building a cheap 2TB NAS with 2 drives in RAID for safety!

Got it for $75 and using it with a Thermaltake BlacX HDD dock. Performs well in that role - large storage drive for low price. I usually get ~25-35MB/s of transfer speed over USB2.0.The only problem would be that the head parks often, to save power.
