Pros:quiet, large capacity

I use this drive to store my media files, so far so good. It's very quiet and running cool in the enclosure. After transferring data, I installed it as internal. Will monitor for a couple month, if it's stable as well, would buy another one.

Cons:Slightly slower than most 7200 RPM drives. Uses Advanced Format 4096 sector size, which can cause problems with older operating systems.

Pros:Huge storage capacity, quiet, low energy consumption, reliable, faster than most energy saving drives.
Comment:
I've been using WD Caviar Green drives since their introduction and for a number of applications. Unless you require a blindingly fast drive these are one of the best, if not the best, drives available. For external drive enclosures and SOHO/NAS servers, they are a perfect fit due to their low energy consumption. They also work well for extra storage in a PC. The only issue I've experienced is that they take a few seconds to spin up from standby if they haven't been accessed for some time. That's usually not an issue but could be if instant access is required. If fast access and speed are required, go with an SSD or Caviar Black drive.

This is WD Caviar Green, so it's not their fastest drive. If you're looking for a storage drive then this is what you're looking for. Lots of storage with 2TB but not very fast 5400rpm ...

Pros:Excellent valuePerfect as a storage driveSilent operation
Comment:
Bought two of these during the last sale. Both work wonderfully. Makes a great storage drive for content that is not time intensive like music and video files. Is not designed to offer the performance for a speedy boot/games/applications drive though, so just remember to use it for what it's intended for best results.

Pros:Cheap, lots of room
Comment:
got it when it's on sale for $100... better than buying 5 stacks of 100 DVD-Rs. Just got another one as I needed more storage. My only concern is what happens if it suddenly decides to kick the bucket... might need to think about Raid 1 or something...

Well the reason I bought this drive are listed in the strengths and so far it is running fine for me. I suppose I could've listed slow speed as a weakness but I'm using this for mass storage of movies so speed isn't a concern really.

One of the best HDD I've had. I remember buying a 1TB drive for the same price exactly a year ago, this western digital drive is definitely the best bang for the buck. Write speed is very good with this drive, I get an average of 85MB/s transferring movies.

Cons: - Excessive head parking can lower drive lifespan.

Pros: - Large capacity.- Quiet.- Surprisingly good performance for a Green drive.- Good price when on sale at NCIX.
Comment:
Good drive overall. Although Green drives are supposed to focus on efficiency more than high end performance, I got some good speed results with this. HD Tune showed 127 MB/s maximum sequential read, 94 MB/s average read and 160 MB/s burst speed. The only problem is the head parking. My understanding is that it's done to save power, but this drive does it very excessively to the point that it can lower the lifespan of the unitWestern Digital has a tool called WDIDLE3 to disable headparking. The tool does not officially support this particular drive but some have reported that it works anyway. This review was modfied by poster @ 07-14-10 12:37 AM

Western Digital WD20EARS Caviar Green 2TB SATA 3 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM
Cons: Drive incorrectly reports Physical Sector size to the OS and relies on users running the WD Align tool (windows) or manually partitioning (linux).

Pros: Price: GB / $
Comment:
This appears to be a good drive at a great GB/$ price. However, the firmware incorrectly reports the Physical Sector size of 512 bytes to the OS. (f/w 50.0AB50). This requires non-windows users to manually partition the drive to properly align the file system partitions with the underlying drive to avoid the drive invoking emulation. WD is leading the market with their 4k sector drives, but unfortunately this is a poor implementation that will hopefully be fixed in a future firmware version (no updates currently available.) I bought this drive for the price, and in this case I got what I paid for.

Western Digital WD20EARS Caviar Green 2TB SATA 3 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM
Cons: - could be SSD fast, but its not

Pros: - 2 TB for $99, whoa!- fast at 130 MB/s R/W (4k = 72 mb/s write, 66 MB/s read)- quiet- 64 MB cache
Comment:
No problem installing in Windows 7. You should never do a quick format on a new drive just in case you have surface errors which you won't discover until its too late. The format took over night and there were no errors on the drive. If you want to fast format, and then check the disk later, over night, you can use a command window to create  a CHKDSK /R. Reboot and let the system check the disk for problems; before you have problems. The package clearly states what to do if you are using WinXP, either place a jumper or download their alignment utility - pretty simple. The resulting drive is easily moved over to Win7 if you want to do that later.

Cons: Somewhat slower than the Caviar Black

Pros: Power saving, future-proof advanced format (4K sectors)
Comment:
Price: I think the Caviar Green 2TB drive (EARS or EADS) is a very good deal when you compare with the Caviar Black (almost 50% cheaper). A year ago the Green 1TB is only ~20 bucks cheaper than the Black.Performance: Don't expect performance from these drives since they are designed to save power. On Windows Vista SP2 it achieves 68MB/s sequential writes (compared to 105MB/s on the Black).
