D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router
Comment:
I have owned this router for a few months now. The constant firmware updates and configuration easily make it the best supported. I have a 10mbps cable connection and get 1.20 MBps al's on my torrents. I can run torrents while gaming and easily block out the IP's of those annoying websites or banners. Of course I use Cat6 with gigabit for my network, but this is what this router is meant for.

I am liking it, but yes I agree it's disapointing that my signal strength hasn't changed much from 30ft away. 55%. I cant make a true review until I get a wireless N receiver. I am now using my old linksys 54G router as my receiver to be able to connect more than one pc at my desk without installing a WL NIC every time i get one to format. Could be the linksys router, but i got the same strength with my netgear 54g router. I just want to know what that guys wife was doing in his neighbours bedroom?! LOL

I purchased this product a little over a week ago and I must say, I'm impressed. I have a 6Mb cable connection and when I do speed tests through my wireless Macbook, I am able to reach those optimum speeds. Network performance is awesome between all of my Wi-Fi equipment including my XBOX360. I have the station centered in my house and am able to reach all corners as well as outside easily. I have neighbors whose Wi-Fi stations used to interfere with my old stations but not the DIR-655; this thing simply is too powerful to be shut out.

I bought this router to replace an old Baricade by SMC. It set up pretty easily. However CAUTION: If you have a printer that is on the network directly and not connected through a PC, DO NOT TELL THE ROUTER YOU HAVE A NETWORK PRINTER EVEN THOUGH IT ASKS IF YOU HAVE ONE. That part of the software must have been written by imported monkeys. JUST DON'T SAY YES TO THE QUESTION duh ''Do you have a network printer?''. If you say yes it attaches it to the PC you're setting up the router with. D-Link, at that time, said they didn't have the Xtreme Router set to show an actual networked printer. Then why ask that stupid question, I ask? Well anyway if you say yes and it's an HP, call HP to fix the problem of never being able to see your printer again. They have a work around. I guess the people in India (D-Link support) just couldn't understand me. And then I got mad and they hung up. I deserved it my wife said. She could hear me yelling at them from the next door neighbor's bedroom. duh????

I got this one to network my house for 3 computers. I'm running a 5mb down speed. This thing is easy to install.. I expected more range from wireless N and for the price. I am only getting 2 bars and not ever 40 feet away, same floor just different room with Xtreme Pci card and there is and almost strait shot to one of the other computers. I am very disappointed for the money, but the system still works great

I have been through several routers from 4 different makes. Some have been too slow some just die after a month or two. I have had the D-Link 655 now for 6 months and it has been great! If only my cable company could keep up with it. I live in the mountains but have fiber-optic cable (go figure). We do lose power from time to time and I have to reset the modem and router to keep in sync. Other than that I am very happy! The service and techs are awesome!!! I tell everyone to buy their electronics here!

D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router
Cons:Will not work with previous Extreme G components. Only connects at 54mps not 108 mps

Pros:More signal strength. Easy setup
Comment:
I am very dissappointed now after spendong many days with tech support trying to set up the router to work at 108mps same as my previous DI 624. I am now told that it will not work at 108 speed. If I want to get it to work faster I need to buy more parts. My range boosters WDA 2320 which I bought to be compatible with Vista are now are now just wasted cash.I always bought D-Link stuff as it was always easy to work with. I think they might have been a bit more forth coming in their specs for the DIR 655. Especially putting Extreme on the box leading you to believe that it was part of the extreme G system.

I bought this a few weeks ago, and after i setup the router it didn't let me connect any of my computers to it. They allowed me to exchange it for Linksys WRT300N Wireless N Router - 300Mbps, 802.11n (Draft-N), 4-Port which works perfectly!!!

I have to say that this router lives up to its press. I have had the unit for more than six months and it works flawlessly. We have a large ranch style home and it works throughout the house and out to the edge of a large deck. This unit replaced an older D-Link router and two Linksys repeaters, one repeater covered the deck and one the basement. They have all gone the eBay route after the 655 was installed. Easy interface and problem free firmware upgrades.

I bought a Linksys N router WRT150N return it back with in 2 days donot work with N at all have done alot of testing firmware upgrade everything but doesn't seem to work at all, the throughput was really bad due to 100Mbps port. I got this DIR-655 Router have it from the last one week. Overall very good router. Works great on both b/g and N environment. Its the best router I have ever bought. I had a very bad experience with DLINK in the past but this router has change my mind. Due to its gigabit ports the throughput on wireless is really great transferred a file of 4 Gig from a Wired Gig PC to a N wireless PC got the bandwidth of 70Mbps. I would recommend everyone to buy if you are looking for a N router and better coverage. I think it worth to pay the amount. Upgrade the firmware to the latest one before deploying.

I replaced two different G routers with this because of constant connection drops and complaints from my kids. Not a complaint since. No connection drops. Netgear USB ''b'' network connection on furthest away PC two floors and lots of walls away, no problems. I cannot comment on transfer speed as I only have 802 b and g on my other 3 PC's but for internet this unit is great. Have had it for two full months and I paid $139 at Best Buy.

I upgraded from a Netgear MIMO 802.11(g) router and I've got to say that I have not been impressed. You get nowhere near 300Mbps on this thing. Not even close. It also tends to slow down output even via ethernet cables compared to my old router if your computer isn't gigabit enabled, which my laptop isn't. To answer your question, I have used it with D-link's own DWA-552 PCI wireless card on my desktop and enabled it to only do draft N networking, and still I max out at 3.5 MBps transfer speeds to my NAS. Wired ethernet gets me only 7.5MBps, when it should be closer to 50MBps. That said, if speed is not an issue, this works pretty well and is easy enough to set up. But if speed isn't an issue, why pay so much?

I noticed an incredible speed difference when connected to my desktop via ethernet due to the 1gb output. The wireless output is awesome. I have had alot of routers the past years and I never experienced a router that is as fast as this one and with a very strong signal. I also included the Ant02-2430 which really increses the signal. This Dir-655 is by far the best yet.

I only gave this 4 stars because I have only had it up one day so far (but I will update if anything comes up). I didn't use the setup wizard; I just cloned my PC's MAC address (like on the old router), and I added DHCP reservations for my networked devices, and everything came together working nicely in about 5 minutes. I have no idea why others had problems. I am getting a solid 5 bars from my laptop 1 floor down from the router as I type. I am not using any 802.11n devices presently, but all my G devices connect at a solid 54.0Mbps.

Awesome router im extremely happy with it my old linksys router was driving me up the wall with dropped connections and frequent random wireless shutdown. I havent had to reboot my D-link once other then during configuration.

Cons:Bright light, Complicated Admin page

Pros:Excellent Signal
Comment:
The reason why I got this router is for signal strength, and the 3 attenas really improved the signal by like 20% from the classic DLINK. Still the signal isn't high (4 rooms away) but at least I have signal now. There is a very bright blue led lights, very bright, that it lights my room, but I hide it behind the garbage tin so it is all good. The Admin page has many stuff missing such as URL filters, so I can filter some urls (so if the url has the word 'hey', it will say access denied. The classic DLINKs had those

Cons:None found so far - early days.

Pros:Excellent signal strength. Easy on the eyes (seriously - much nicer looking than older Linksys). Ability to store/retrieve configs on PC.
Comment:
Upgraded from WRT54GS to this at same time as adding a DNS-323 NAS box to my network. Took about 2 minutes to configure the router as a drop-in replacement for my WRT54GS. The ability to backup the config to a PC, upgrade the flash and then restore the config was REALLY handy. No issues so far with 1.05 firmware (fingers crossed).WRT54GS needed to be coupled with an external power amp (since discontinued by Linksys) to reach all the corners of my house. DIR-655 had no problems all on its own - maybe the MIMO technology is indeed helping. NB - my network is all B & G right now. Will be adding/changing over to N later.Every device I have on my wireless network had no problem sync'ing up - two different laptops, XBOX360 and a Wii. Hardwire connected devices (NAS, couple of PC's and a printer) just worked.Interesting button on the side of the router with a sticker saying "Reserved" covering it - not sure what its for ... Looks like maybe a way to force key exchanges for secure network setup ?!?!? I did all my config with just base 128-bit WEP.Excellent throughput from wireless to GE connected NAS - when I get my new mobo built with GE on it, will see how a wired connection does.DHCP addresses seem to be hashed rather than sequentially allocated. Configuration adds nice capability of caching the IP address / device name so that port forwarding on DHCP served devices is reliable. This review was modfied by poster @ 10-11-07 01:19 PM

Cons:Not the most compatible with Macs.

Pros:GREAT signal strength, good range, not bad to look at either

This is a great router. It was easy to set up and easy to upgrade the firmware and all that. Security was a breeze. The setup and login are much easier to use, understand and just better to look at than my old wireless G and the whole process was easy. Huge increase in the range and signal quality. The only snag I havn't fixed yet is that it seems to be incompatible with my roommate's Mac. Both Wired and Wireless. Got to be the Mac becasue 4 other computer connect no problem!

I replaced a Belkin "G" router with this one and what a difference! The Belkin never gave good me good connection at all, and was consistently slow to connect after restarting the computer out of sleep mode(if at all). This router has never disconnected once, and is fast to reconnect to my computer. The connection of the Dlink is always 100% and gives me a little better speed, although not what they claim. The blue LED's are stupidly way too bright, as I get a blue hue from that room.Overall, very happy with this modem. This review was modfied by poster @ 10-06-07 08:20 AM
