Straightforward setup, excellent coverage. Fantastic data rates. Tons of optional settings. Haven't used USB port however. The tons of optional setting and what do they all mean. Brand new, will review once again in a month. Was scared to upgrade. Was employing a venerable Link sys WRT 54 G and it had alway been wonderful. Had a matching access point to cover whole property. Now this unit covers the entire house alone and very easily with great speeds. I am genuinely enjoying this hardware so far.

Cons:Buggy out of the box

Pros:PrettyGood signal strengthFlexible configuration
Comment:
In order to have this router actually work, you have to do a firmware upgrade. Otherwise, the wireless radio turns off every 24 hours (or so).Otherwise, it's a good, flexible gigabit wireless-N router, and was reasonably inexpensive at the time of purchase.

out of the box worked good incredibly pleased with top quality and cost. uncomplicated setup. supports all of my electronics ƒ laptops, 1 desktop, ps3, xbox 360, wii, droid x, and linux desktop) with no lag. (internet primarily applied for streaming, gaming and downloading). wish i had bought this item initially. none so far with the unit. just replaced my Linksys RangePlus Wireless router WRT110 with the D-link mainly because my linksys kept dropping connection whenever i connected a laptop or computer to the network and would have to fight to get it to bring it back. one particular day in on the d-link and currently im loving it.

It operates fantastic except it's extremely slow. Caps out about 200kBps. I in no way observed it ahead of due to the fact my net was never that fast. I recently upgraded from DSL to Cable, and went from 150kBps to 1200kBps download speed. Dilemma is that as soon as I ran it through the router, it maxed out at 𞳸kBps. I ran the firmware update, named tech help, and messed around with it all afternoon, to no avail. I went and bought a Netgear router and plugged it in, and BAM there's my 1200kBps. Now I don't know what to do with this 1 :(

It functions! I have it tucked away in a cabinet upstairs and have my gaming rig in the basement and I play BFBC2 with no troubles whatsoever. I just plugged it in and it has worked flawlessly ever given that. I was also able to plug a USB external HD into it and now essentially have a NAS setup that is good for moving files about my several machines. None actually. It does what it is meant to do.

4Ǜ bars on the other side of the residence. Small packet loss/little noise. High Mbps. No dropped connections when connected wirelessly with a Computer, Laptop, and Wii, all operating simultaneously. XBox 360 has constant dropped connections. Have tried a quantity of distinct settings and obtaining frustrated with it. The 360 is the major device using the router. When it's connected, the connection speed is fantastic. No lag, even on a DSL(ugh) connection. Would have five eggs if this problem could ever get ironed out. Good router for simple requirements but a hassle to get stable on the 360. DLink forums are not filled with the most helpful facts ever. Buyer Assistance by way of DLink is just as unresponsive. I would still advise this router as not everyone seems to have an matter, just seems to be hit and miss and I feel I am leaning towards the missed side of points.

Comment:
Wired speeds are outstanding thanks to the gigabit ports. No matters gaming on 2 XBOX 360's simultaneously and downloading torrents at the similar time. Wireless speeds are superb when the connection is great. Range is far worse than the Netgear Rangemax G router it is replacing. I have a tiny 3 bedroom, single story property and with the Netgear G router I had full signal all throughout the residence and even on the back porch outside. With the D-Link 655, even in N only mode, if I leave the room with the router, I shed at least a single signal bar. I have 2 Android phones that completely shed signal in the furthest corner of my property, and they had full signal on the Netgear.

This replaced my older model of this appears like the new one particular has many fantastic new features that is for confident. One particular is also excellent is you can have it do a caption for admin and pass so making it 10times harder for a bot to attempt logging in. I had this setup and going in a couple of minutes. But i already knew how to set this router up. The first 1 was acting really funny so i sent that back and im not going to knock a egg off for this at all as it was hassle free, did not have to spend for shipping back and got my new one particular fairly rapid. Thanks Newegg. 1 con is i could not use my old settings with this router so i had to do every little thing manually but not to negative. So far every little thing functions best. got it cheap at 54.99 when it was a sale special going on. With this router and my modem i have my connection is like on crazy no hacking at all and i am suppose to have 12mb connection but i get50-60mb Down and 2-4mb up so you can see fantastic difference and also seriously dependable with connecting to it.

mostly concur with other critiques after two months or so in a developing w/ㅂ users this started dropping connections numerous instances a day, often requiring reboot to restore connectivity, but manual firmware update fixed it (so farӭ week of excellent function) apparently two versions of the 655, but you can't tell from looking at the device. I tried the automatic firmware update, then saw a different (_REVB two.01) on the DLink page which turned me back into a believer. Strange that it wouldn't update to this automatically.

It does (occasionally) transmit signals wirelessly. I purchased it so that my wife could have wireless connection to her lap best.Mainly because of this obtain, I now live in fear that my wife will kill me in my sleep. I have bought items from Newegg (great website), but not this distinct item. Nonetheless, I hate the factor so substantially (even though it works a lot more typically than not) that I really feel compelled to write unfavorable critiques on it in order to vent some of the steam that arises when I see a picture of it. And it's not as if I don't know any tech; I've built and use my personal Linux server for my home network that contains Windows 7, XP, Apple, Linux and Android machines.

Excellent speedsEasy to configure and useTinyQuite robust wireless signalWi-Fi Protected Setup to quickly add wireless devices to the network SharePort (USB) is practically worthless. You can only connect one laptop or computer at a time to the device and the D-Link software program needs to be installed on each and every machine that will be connecting to it. You would be just as properly off connecting the device to a USB port on the computer system. I also take into account it a con that this router is not supported by DD-WRT due to the fact it is not operating a Broadcom chip. I upgraded from a Linksys WRT54GL router and the Ethernet bandwidth is a major improvement. I have not been able to utilize the wireless N to find out the speed over G but I am positive it is important. Signals are wonderful although.

Fantastic wireless range--when it functions Randomly drops wireless networkHas to be teased, cajoled, begged, and babied to get connected back up to my cable modem, even right after switching ethernet cablesTakes MINUTES to connect to the world-wide-web when it DOES connectd-link help is practically worthless I've used d-link with out an issue due to the fact I very first went to high speed internet...until now. The only purpose I replaced my DIR-628 is mainly because I thought my network would get greater speed for VoIP and streaming video with this router. I ultimately gave up soon after about a week of messing with this and plugged my DIR-628 back in. Even with the low wireless signal, at least it's STABLE and everyone on my network can use the internet. I like d-link, but I'm beyond disappointed in this router.

It functions OK when it does operate. Has excellent range. Drops connection all the time. Genuinely difficult navigation menu. Dont be fooled with words like "Xtreme N" and "Gamimg" due to the fact its the identical (if not worse) then most other Gaming N routers.its incredibly overpriced, there is no reason to devote additional than ุ for a good router. Just do a search on for WRT160N, the ideal router Ive ever owned and its a quarter of the cost. This router was the greatest mistake of my life, and I'm divorced Don't bother.

Was easy to setup, offers good security features (even with default options), has a good range (can access it from outside the house) and speed. Unfortunately it is not supported by the DD-WRT firmware, so forget about all extra features provided by this firmware... Was good enough for my girlfriend.

D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router
Cons:-Unstable-Drops WAN connection-WiFi is intermittent-Firmware sucks-Can't use third party firmware (DD-WRT, OpenWRT, Tomato)...as of yet, at least, and probably gonna stay that way due to the processor.

Pros:-Good set of features-Strong WiFi signal-Gigabit ports
Comment:
I've had this router for 3 years now, pretty much since it first came out. But then last year after some firmware updates, things started to go downhill. It is a great router when it works. But when it doesn't work, it will drive you insane - random reboots, dropped packets, WiFi is on and off, WAN connection disconnects and fails to reconnect until you do a hard reset, terrible QoS (on the newer firmware). If you're gonna buy this router, make sure you do some research on the firmware issues (there's enough info online). For the time being, I have reverted to the legendary WRT54GL + tomato combo.

I'll make it brief. Excellent Performing Router if you can configure it Appropriately. Nice speed for my desktop (N Dual Band) and Laptop. I switched from Lynksys WRT160N and they are about the similar (prob, lynksys disconnects far more usually) CD wizard is junt (could be valuable for beginners) I had to set up manually to get my Desktop speed up to 270mb max. ANNOYING Component: From time to time signal drop to 130mb and I had to restart router or manual go to D-link configure page 鴀.168..1) and switch back to Only G and N speed. UPS shipping: not the finest, box edge came damaged a little but thank to D-link for packaging router very carefully. I DO Recommend THIS ROUTER. I had employed a lot of Belkins, Linksys rotuers and this one seems to be the greatest one so far for ๖ on newegg.

My workhorse DLink 524 finally gave up the ghost, so I panicked and scored a ฤ Belkin from Walmart as a stop-gap. Although that product was mainly okay, I wearied of getting to reboot the thing to get my FTP server port-forwarding to perform properly I grabbed this oldie but goodie on a ridiculous sale and am really pleased. Tons of functions (of which I've only sampled a couple of) but I couldn't think about wanting far more. Not certain if it'll take open supply firmware, but I can't think about what else I'd want. QoS and Gigabit ethernet were the selling points for me. Had to hard reset when immediately after strain-testing the factor with remote admin and port-forwarded Win7 remote desktop test session. Hasn't occurred again - it's been up and operating solid for a few weeks now. I appreciate the security-concentrate, but it's a PITA to have to decipher the captha small business each and every time I log in remotely. Guess that's great, although.

Uncomplicated to setup, do not seriously want the installation cd. Make sure you know details like dns servers for your ISP. I have charter high speed and setup was straightforward. 4 gigabit ports were primary motivation for my choice to acquire this router. Other selection for me was the linksys E2000 which seemed evenly speced. The dir655 has been around for ever and has had a lot of firmware revisions so i assume most bugs are ironed out by now. If you are acquiring this router you in all probability are aware that it is a single band router (no 5GHz) so thats not a minus. get a thing else if you require the much less crowded 5GHz channel. I rely on netflix and hulu for my Tv fix and this router does not disappoint. With 18Megs down from charter, i have a htpc, a roku box and my house workplace pc along with a nas hooked up to the Gigabit ports and i adore it. QOS left on auto appears to take care of streaming and voip (skype) nicely adequate. Two a lot more laptops, smartphone and ipad2 use the wireless which is on a mixed 802.11G & N This router came out in 07 i think so its most likely to be at end of life and that would mean no much more firmware revisions from dlink but to be honest i believe it is fairly up to date. Also i have not utilised it yet but the usb port on this router can be utilized to share a printer or a external HDD but only one particular client computer can connect to it at any time. Not to major of a con but just an fyi. Not sure if white is a excellent color for a router but then again it is a individual selection and just a cosmetic thing. It could be painted yellow and it would be ok as long it works 100%. The lights on front are blue and are pretty vibrant. Not a entire lot of cons and even the ones i listed are not major. Other reviewers noted that tech support is horrible, i have not had to deal with them but clue much less wonders reading scripted support concerns would suck!

Lots of settings - good speeds, hardly ever a connection drop Shareport sucks my left *** If DLINK could fix their stupid shareport concerns for the usb port on this device then it would easily be fiveǛ and near excellent bar not becoming dual band (i don't require that anyways). Regrettably the usb port is useless and whilst I don't will need it, it would be a good way to download torrents to my 2TB drive and then just pop the cable out of the router and into my PS3 - maybe a future firmware will fix but as of today i'm out of luck

I bought this much more than a year ago, and in that whole time have not had 1 challenge with it. The only time I had to reset it was when I upgraded my cable modem from a SB 5120 to a SB 6120. None. Zilch. Nada. I at the moment have the following wireless devices connected: 2 notebooks, 1 Pandigital ebook reader, 1 Panasonic Blu-Ray Player, 1 Epson 610 all in one. Moreover I have two gaming PC's and 1 NAS connected to the 1GB LAN and an old HP 2025dn connected to the USB port. Every little thing functions.
