D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router
Comment:
Quick when it works, straightforward to set up and less expensive than competition for comparable attributes. breaks very easily, i've bought this router a variety of occasions and had good experiences with it. but with horrible firmware revisions that broke the product and stop you from reverting to a stable functional firmware. and new DIR-655's coming with the unusable firmware makes this router a hunk of junk.each and every time i bought and set up this router, it would function amazingly, powerful strength, long range, quick wireless gaming. but the efficiency degraded exceedingly rapidly to the point exactly where only employing ethernet cables was an selection. I went from getting a huge fan of D-link (Owned a Dlink modem, router, and adapter.) and advised my consumers and clients to acquire them (for three+ years) to recommending absolutely everyone to prevent them and invest a little a lot more for a Considerably much more stable router, and firmware that operates.

This was my very first time installing and setting up a wireless router. From receiving the package to being connected wirelessly with my pc, laptop, and Xbox360, took about 20 minutes tops. Speed increase was evident right away. Went from having twoǛ bars on the pc utilizing the verizon dsl router to having 4Ǜ with the dlink. Also now holding 130mbps as opposed to the 35 I had. Port forwarding was also a breeze on this factor. Not a con with the item (as it's in all probability user error) but I can't get above 130mbps. Could be my dsl connection or the modem. Could be a setting. I changed to N only set it to 20ኄ and set the channel rather of letting it auto adjust. Will have to do a small more study, but again this isn't a con with the router itself. So far really pleased, especially at practically 50% off. Will update later once I get a superior world-wide-web service and have had for far more than a week. Also, as with fairly much every little thing I've ordered from the egg, I got it in less than 48 hours. Best shipping experiences I've had have been by way of the egg. Excellent job guys and gals.

It's quickly, delivers numerous distinct security options to meet diverse needs, and it's got gigabit ports. The bright lights can be distracting in low light circumstances and, as far as I can tell, there's no way to dim them or turn them off except to cover them with a thing. I'm strongly contemplating receiving some nearly opaque tape to tape more than the front panel. Some concerns with re-connecting to router when SSID broadcasting is off. Once connected, issues go good, but when the pc (only occurs on 1 of my three laptops) reboots the connection has to be re-developed instead of automatically reconnecting (like my other two laptops do). I've checked the Windows setting and can't locate anything wrong there. I got this router to replace a WRT54G that was beginning to be a little flaky. I had the Linksys for a lengthy time, so I hope that this one will be just as excellent to me. So far, I'm incredibly happy. I've set up my wife's laptop with XBMC to stream my movie collection (all DVDs ripped as ISOs) and it works beautifully. No stutter, no frame rate concerns, no audio clipping. Now, I can watch football even though she watches a movie (wearing headphones) and everybody is pleased. The Gigabit ports Permit for enough bandwidth for me to stream a film to my HTPC (from my server) while simultaneously streaming to the laptop. I've got three laptops that connect to this factor on a standard basis and I only really had difficulties with 1 of them re-connecting to the router when the broadcast SSID choice was turned off. Turning it on removed that challenge. I'd rather have it off, but I've got other security in location, so it's not too massive an problem.

Inexpensive for the functions USB on the router for wireless network storage and printing Slow!!!! My three year old airlink 101 AWLL670 would connect solid at 15O just about every time to all but the furthest pc in my house Ɩ). With this router none will even reach 100 and generally less than 50 Mbps. Not even sitting subsequent to the router with my brand new Gateway I3-370 laptop. I even went and got the Dlink DWA-131 USB wireless adapter thinking it was an incompatibility with my airlink and laptop's built in wireless adapter. Terrible connection speed in any of my computers. I have called tech support half a dozen times. They would by no means connect me to a supervisor. Just about every tech had a unique recommendation causing me to redo just about every computer in the residence each and every time.I really like this 1: One tech told me my router essential to get applied to my adapters and would speed up more than time.

D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router
Cons:- random disconnect- not good for online gaming at all

Pros:- fast data transfer- share port- relatively long range even through walls/doors
Comment:
I have this for a quite some time now. While I haven't really experienced any issues with it except for random disconnects, other people in the household aren't so lucky. They find that their systems could not detect or connect to the router without restarting the router. This is annoying especially if only one person can't connect and the others are doing fine. It interrupts everybody. And if you are looking to game online, there is absolutely no way. Lag is too much.On the bright side, it's shareport is pretty handy. Moving files without having to go through "sharing" is a good thing IMO. Although I guess one can live without it. You can use that for a printer without wireless capabilities as well. The downside to that is that you have to install the driver CD on each computer who wants to use such capability. While I am satisfied with this, I want to try other's and see what they offer.

I believe I bought this at full price a few years ago. It's been running smoothly since and it works well and its signal penetrates what seems to be the lead-based paint in my house. Lead-based paint could be an exaggeration but reception in my house is horrible in general.

Wireless N, Dual Band, Gigabit No monitoring tools/features, flakey wireless performance, not dd-wrt or 3rd party firmware compatible, no snmp support, QoS performance I bought this router particularly for the QoS. I often have a lot of traffic on my network going at when. I also simultaneously need to have to be able to make a voip call with out acquiring degradation or I'd like to get on xbox live and not expertise a large quantity of lag. So that feature was extremely nice nevertheless, it doesn't seem to work all that excellent. I'm a network engineer so I'd like to believe I know what I'm doing (some could argue ;-) but the QoS feature just didn't cut the mustard. I also experienced some flakey wireless performance on the two.4ghz band using Wireless G devices. I have a laptop that sits < 10 feet away from the router and is acting as a torrent machine. I rdp into that laptop and the responsiveness and efficiency of that machine was terrible. When I plugged in the old router and configured it to be a Wireless G AP, the issue went away. I can't truly explain it, just some weird issues, and didn't want to take the time to troubleshoot. Finding an cisco e3000 w/dd-wrt...

Implementation reasonably straight-forward with full WPA security. Tested speeds are about 30% better than Linksys modem it replaced. Each my workstation and laptop right away identified the new router and made the connection. Set up wizard works as advertised and I had full world wide web access within 20 minutes of opening the box and creating the connections in sequence. None. Wireless networking signal strength in my household is comparable to b/g router it replaced. (Router in basement office--1 floor above). Configuring wireless printer (HP J4680) for WPA security was a nightmare--but that is not the fault of the router. Even HP's aid site was of low value.

Gbit Lan and Wan ports.N WirelessSimple Gui interfaceQoSUSB portLots of selections Sigh, soon after owning this router for over a year, and being almost rock solid. The upload speed on my 40Ǜ service seemed to come to a crawl (.5Mbps), however download speed is never affected. Immediately after fighting with the service provider for two weeks to replace the modem each time, (they swapped it out 3 times), I've narrowed the issue down to this router. I've down ALL of my testing by way of hardwire, as wireless is not an concern. I've updated the firmware to the most current. Very same issue. Restored to factory numerous times, same concern. Referred to as Dlink, they had me adjust the MTU settings, it improved slightly, but the rep was dumb as rocks and tried to tell me to wait 20 min to wait for it to boost. Lengthy story brief, I tried several MTU settings, waited additional than 20 min each and every time and my circumstance is back to how it was. Buyer beware... this is a throw a way router. Get if you require a switch / AP, but wouldn't suggest for a lengthy term install.

I use this router as a Wireless Access point, as my Actiontec router from Telus has terrible wireless coverage. The wireless on the DIR-655 has much better coverage, and I get good signals around my house. Its stable, easy to configure, lots of good features. No problems at all. Definitely recommend it!!

Great looks, blue LED's look nicer than conventional green or amber lights.Long-lasting... I've owned this for more than 4 years now and it's nonetheless going strong.Excellent wireless range. Have it set up in the basement and it reaches the second floor with 2Ǜ signal strength bars. Wireless connection is stable and never ever drops, even when using 4 or additional devices simultaneously.Gigabit ports ensure maximum speed when transferring significant files over the LAN.World wide web speed testing varies with time of day, but my last attempt I received 40mbps down and 4mbps upload rate. Quite, quite fast!I can upload torrents and game at the similar time without having any negative effects while playing. If you merely cap your upload rate at a reasonable level you won't have issues. As soon as in a even though, I'll have to reset energy to the router. My last time I had an uptime of about 118 days until it needed a reset. At times I can go longer, other times I go about a month or two. It's totally random. It's rare sufficient and straightforward adequate to fix that it hasn't bothered me considerably.I wish you could port forward essential ports for every device on the network, but it only seems to function with individual machines with a statically assigned IP address. I have had issues with particular wireless devices, but they had been never the fault of this router. I have a feeling most people today getting problems with this router either received a defective unit or have poor excellent wireless adapter(s) getting employed. That or the router isn't configured optimally.I never had to update my firmware to get it to work. Despite the fact that I did update it anyway shortly right after buying it.If it doesn't appear like you are finding the speed you are paying for from your ISP it most likely isn't anything to do with this router, but could potentially be your cable modem. Soon after upgrading to a higher end cable modem my world wide web speeds almost doubled from just before.

This router is feature wealthy for the expense. Worked superb and rapidly prior to failure. My initially D-Link router. It lasted less than 1 year.Due to the fact my router began having problems I have had to call tech support five times. Each and every time I would call I would be placed on hold multiple times although they looked up my information (It is obvious D-Link outsources their service department). In the course of the initial call I was treated rudely, "ordered" to install new firmware, and not given a case number or reference number. My second by means of fourth call was complex by the need for details that were covered in previous calls, etc. When I was lastly granted an RMA and received a replacement item, the high quality of the replacement was SUB-PAR for an item that was classified as "refurbished" (the product box was damaged, not sealed. The router was dirty and seated well in the box. The peripherals were strewn about the box.). This is the excellent I would expect from a common on the web classifieds or auction website for a "fair" excellent item. Even though the product itself was terrific, and I recognize that electronics will fail, I cannot see myself purchasing from D-Link once again. Their support system is unwieldy and need to a future concern occur to come up, I would dread getting to call and fight my way by way of this method once again.

If and when it works it has excellent connectivity, up and down times. The cons is that it does not function. Immediately after two months of seemingly working I was obtaining regualar drops. My up and download speeds where lower than your average DSL line and I have Comcast high speed. I tested this alongside my old Lynksys and there is no contest I really should have read and followed other reviewers. This WiFi router has problems with continuing to work. The RMA method is a nightmare, you have to go by way of their Tech Support which fundamentally are people who answer the phone right after 20 mins on hold, can not speak english and troubleshoot via scripts. You have been warned, stick with Lynksys, at least they work!!
