D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router
Cons:Dlink, Firmware

Pros:Gigibit, Wireless N
Comment:
I purchased this router about 7 months ago, mainly because it was cheap, and at the time very few routers offered gigibit lan, and wireless N. the router has been OK at the very best. the firmware is not opensource or upgradeable to any 3rd party firmware (typicical Dlink) and the range on it is quite comparable with that of my WRT54G if not shorter. If i were in the market now (7 months later) i would probably take a look at competing devices now that there's more. and probably go with something else.

Value for money
Comment:
Easy to set up, offers good security options. Our previous router was a D-Link Extreme G which was beginning to lock up occasionally because of the high traffic volume. The 655 handles our 2 desktops, 2 laptops and 2 WiFi devices effortlessly and certainly appears to be faster than the old unit.

Great Product
Comment:
We bought this wireless router to upgrade our existing DLink G router. It exceeded my expectations. I have now bought one for my office as well. You can hook an usb external hard drive and share files between computers on the network great added value. As well very little lag time on XBox live for my 2 teenages sons and they are hooked up wirelessly as well. Would recommend to anyone who asks.

Thumbs Down
Comment:
I had to bump down to 802.11G because I just simply couldn't have more than one PC talking to the network (both with DWA-552 NICs). Two PCs on a 4MB connection and only one can talk to the Internet... and I bought two of these routers. What a knucklehead I am. The best router I ever had was an el cheapo.

Very Happy!
Comment:
I have had this router for about 6 months now. It has been working flawlessly. As to range, well it seems to work anywhere in my house. LOL but the house is quite small. All in all I am very happy with this purchase.

Another Great Product
Comment:
This is the second DIR-655 Router that I have bought and I installed it inline with the first. Now I have complete coverage of the house with two networks and it works as advertised.

Place a printer on one of your computers. Go to Share and share the printer over the network. You can then print from any computer.. However the puter the printer is on always has to stay on..

Works OK - Bur Range is No Joy
Comment:
I have had a wireless G Linksys router for many years, located in the middle of my home, transmitting to my barn office 150' away. The signal must travel through 1 sheetrock wall, 1 exterior wood wall, and a glass window in the barn office. The Linksys has been working, slowly, with 1 bar of signal, but was becoming unstable and needing rebooting twice per week. I bought the D-link and companion USB receiver, and unfortunately I see no increase at all in signal strength, the speed is about the same, and it has needed to be re-booted twice since I installed it 3 weeks ago. I was going to return it but it has worked adequately this week and I do not know what I would replace it with. When manufacturers advertise 4x and 6x range, it must not be in real world conditions. Still looking for a true longer range router.

A well designed product
Comment:
I bought this as an upgrade to an older D-link wireless router. The unit is well designed and the user (web) interface is easy to use. Not the most intuitive setup, but once you grasp how things are laid out, you'll have no difficulties. Not to mention that this device is FAST. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Works well especially for large homes, numerous floors, etc. A little complicated to set up for the novice but worth the frustration!!!

Nice Router
Comment:
I am using this unit as my intranet router in a dual router and subnet setup. I am doing jumbo frames with my NAS with no problem as well as MAC address filtering on the ewireless side with WPA encryption. I have had no problems whatsoever with this fine unit.

Great Upgrade
Comment:
I upgraded my router due to the need for a compatible router with Open DNS (great DNS service that provides content filtering for EVERY device on the network)and I decided to go from G to N. Gigabit ports show a decent increase in speed of file transfers and the strength of the mix mode G and N wireless network is awesome! Now I need to upgrade all of my laptops to N. It has a USB port for printers, scanners, etc and I had to download the latest software to get the port to work with my old printer. Other than that, its a fairly easy setup.

Good Product
Comment:
I have some experience setting up wireless networks, but I still had to call support. Right out of the box, ran the auto install software and the computer set up a router with no problem for my desktop. However the laptop couldn't connect to the internet (only to the home network). A call to support and about 10 minutes later we solved the problem (DNS address was incorrect). The unit is working great now. My laptop is only G rated, but I also got a N rated bridge for my Netflix account. The speed to the bridge seems great. As fast as a direct cable.

Did not work with my network
Comment:
If you have a wireless radio connection on your house this may not work for you. It did not work for me. It never saw my internet connection, even after troubleshooting with my ISP and with D-Link.

Simple & Quick, Sort of stronger type 'g'
Comment:
Right from opening the box it was easy enough. Put the CD into my computer and followed the ... 6 items (maybe 7) and that was it. Umpluged the network turned on the wireless and worked no problem. Turned on my wife's brand new laptop and entered the appropriate codes and connected right away. The range is improved over the old type 'g' wireless but I wouldn't say it's as advertised like 14x, (box says 6x). I'm going to say it's about 4x. They like to say no structural interferences, but I would disagree. Quickly installed the additional usb utility and plugged in my printer and away it goes. I'm happy with this unit.

Great Router
Comment:
I've had this for about a month, and it has performed flawlessly so far. Lots of features for geeks to play with, but still pretty easy for the average person to configure. Very good range and stability, I haven't had a single dropped connection inside my house yet.

Good... but
Comment:
I bought this to use with a Roku box for video. I'm real new to the wireless world even though I had a wireless router before, I had wired it for our computer network and used the wireless to send iTunes music to my stereo. I needed to upgrade to do video, so I bought this as it was one of the recommended ones by Roku. I'm old enough to remember TV in black and white only and the revelation of seeing it in color for the first time. Now to see it streaming from the internet is just unreal and the router works just great! A lump of coal instead of a star though to D-Link because the documentation and software is for PC only. Being on a Mac, I had to figure out how to access the router via html, and once I did, I got it set up with relative ease.
